On April 30, 2022, I contacted Robert Morris Burchette (Alex), who immediately consented to a phone interview: ----As I intend to share this project with others, or even try to get it published, may I include your responses to my questions, in the project please? Yes. ----How did you acquire the job working on Another Life please? I was a regional actor, a well-known actor in the area. When they had an audition, my Agent sent me. The role of Alex was originally supposed to be for 3-4 episodes. Then, the storyline took another direction, and the writers decided to use the character on a continued basis. ----What, if any, motivated you to want to breathe life into Alex please? I was just very excited to have the opportunity to appear on a soap opera. I had never done a soap opera before: I thought I’d give it a try. I had a very enjoyable time! ----What was your reaction to Another Life’s cancellation please/? I was quite surprised. The cancellation came without warning. They just called the Cast together and made the announcement. We were given a 2-week cancellation notice. Everyone had to work very hard, to tie all the storylines together, in just 2 weeks! ----In what way(s) did working on Another Life change your life please? I met some wonderful people and I gained a good understanding, as to what is involved in producing a daytime soap opera. There was a lot more involved than I originally thought. ----If you don’t mind me asking, are you a born-again Christian please? I have been a devout Christian all of my life! I grew up in a church family & I am currently in the Episcopal church. ----Are you still acting please? Not any longer. My memory doesn’t enable me to memorize the dialogue anyone. I have also been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, so I have physical limitations. I am not mobile and is in a retirement community now. I have a son and a daughter, 5 grandchildren (4 females and 1 male) and 1-year old great grandson. -----Do you have any episodes of Another Life in your possession please? I have some VHS tapes, but I don’t know where they are. They’re still in my possession, somewhere. I don’t think my wife would know anymore than I do, regarding where the tapes are: I will ask her anyways. We are both 86 years old now. ----Did you ever receive any offers to work on other soap operas before or after Another Life please? No. I didn’t pursue another soap opera, as I didn’t want to leave Virginia. After Another Life, I did a lot of local commercials and stage work. ----Do you have any thoughts on anyone who have since passed away please? The late Edye Byrde (Ione) was wonderful! I had over my house one evening, for dinner. The late Jerry Timm (Gil Prescott #1) was a very good-looking guy. I knew the late J. Michael Hunter (Gil Prescott #2) before he appeared on Another Life. He was a lovely man: his wife also worked on the show. The late Jerry Rowe (John Dirkin/Walter McGovern) was very well known in local theater, before Another Life: he has a very impressive theater resume. I appeared on stage, with Jerry, before Another Life came about. ----Do you have a message for the fans? I am very appreciative to have had the opportunity to stay on Another Life, from beginning to end. I appreciate the fans. If they didn’t watch, we wouldn’t have had a show. The fans made it possible for me to have a really exciting experience! ----Are you still in contact with anyone from Another Life please? No. I used to be in contact, fairly regularly, with Matt Williams (Ben). When the writers decided to introduce the character of Ben, Alex was Ben’s mentor. Matt and I had a lot of scenes together. He would visit my wife and I and spend the weekends with us. My wife and I went to New York City, several times, to visit Matt and his wife. We even took a trip together, to Greece. Right as Another Life was going off the air, Matt was hired to work on The Cosby Show: God gave Matt a wonderful opportunity! Matt then became Head Writer on the show. Also, Matt did some writing for Roseanne Barr’s show and he wrote for Carol Burnett. Then, Matt was one of the creators of Home Improvement, starring Tim Allen. Eventually, Matt formed his own Production Company. Matt is a good Christian, a fine actor, and a talented writer! Reichardt For Lilly Melgar, who plays Lily Rivera on “General Hospital,” the hardest part of daytime stardom has been adjusting to granting interviews rather than conducting them. “It’s so hard,” confesses the interviewer turned actress. “It’s so strange. I get this nervous feeling, because I have no control. And I’m used to being the one in control, the one asking the questions and gearing the conversation.” Melgar comes to soaps with three years of reporting experience as host of her own Latino television shows. “My first show, ‘Tu Musica,’ was a lot like MTV,” Melgar explains. “I interviewed people like Santana, Luis Enrique, Yuri, and Ricky Martin when he was a member of the group Menudo. Then, I did ‘Desde Hollywood,’ which is like ‘Entertainment Tonight,’ and ‘Ritmo International,’ a show done by the producers of ‘Star Search.’ ” While her reporting career flourished, Melgar admits that she never stopped dreaming of becoming an actress. “I had too much passion for it,” Melgar says, noting that she took acting classes on and off over the years. “I knew I had to pursue it.” Last December, Melgar promptly landed an agent and began going to auditions. A meeting with “General Hospital” executive producer Wendy Riche was among them. As fate would have it, the show was looking for a love interest for Ricky Martin (Miguel Morez), who was a friend of Melgars from her television shows. “The two of us did some scenes together, just to show (the “General Hospital” brass) my work,” Melgar recalls. “We had such great chemistry. Wendy just fell in love with it.” By April, Melgar was part of “General Hospital.” “I’d been watching ‘General Hospital’ since junior high school,” she says. “I always knew I’d be on it one day. “My mom taught me that there’s nothing you can’t achieve if you really want it bad enough,” Melgar continues. “All you have to do is go after it, and it’s yours. She supported (my desire to become an actress) a lot. She always saw it in me. She gave me confidence in myself to go for it.” Melgar also credits her mother with keeping her grounded throughout her fame. “When I did the Hispanic market, I was pretty popular; everybody knew me,” she explains. “It’s easy to forget your focus. My mom has always been there to remind me of that, which is great. She’s not one of those moms who says, ‘Oh darling, everything you do is beautiful. My daughter is the best.’ Her advice has been, ‘Keep your feet on the ground honey, because as fast as (success) comes, it can be gone.’ And I’m very aware of that. I thank her so much for that.” Melgar appreciates her wonderful colleagues at “General Hospital” too. “Everyone is awesome,” she says. “I’m so lucky to be working with Wendy, producer Francesca James, and the whole cast.
