  3. Yes, I saw that this morning. I don’t know who he is but I read that they do a podcast together. Congratulations to them.
  4. Lord, I forgot that the French Open had pushed back their tournament to the fall in 2020. I don’t remember who even won that year. Tennis has become predictable, even in its unpredictability (i.e. the WTA results). I will say, I do find Paolini’s personal story very compelling and except for that final, I enjoyed watching her play, despite who she plays double with (I am glad that Coco and Katerina won the title, and believe it or not, this was Coco’s first major title in doubles). I don’t want to disparage anyone’s game, it obviously works for her but Swiatek’s game has never been very interesting to me and that’s okay, that’s life. As much as I like Coco and the person she is, I don’t always enjoy her tennis either. I wonder whether tennis as a sport will continue to lose ground (I am paying far more attention to cricket these days than tennis and not because of the U.S. team, cricket is part of my heritage, lol) or will something happen to revive it. There have been times when the sport seems to retreat from prominence, then you have an era full of interesting people with some swag with big game bringing more attention to tennis.
  5. I’ve never cared for Tennis Channel’s coverage so I can’t honestly say I’m sorry. TC has raised their production values from where they were originally but the standard still seems less than ideal. TC gives Challenger scale values, so maybe they’ll focus on that tour and pickle ball, of course. I forgot to mention that, I actually missed the end of the men’s final but when Alcaraz won that fourth set, I pretty much knew that he’d only close the door on Sascha in the final set. I do wonder who TNT will get to do commentary. I am almost afraid to find out.
  6. It’s been a long time since I ate at a food court but this is yet another activity that takes place in a public space to worry about. https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/11/us/peachtree-center-mall-shooting-atlanta/index.html
  7. I have started to rethink the idea of chemistry. Over the weekend, I watched one of those roundtable discussions between actors and interestingly enough, Nicole Kidman said she hated the reliance on chemistry tests because she believed a “lack of chemistry” was usually due to a lack of rehearsal and/or a lack of a director doing their job properly. One of the questions I have continually been asking about daytime soaps over the last 15+ years is whether the director is actively working with these actors to produce the best results on screen. I think sometimes people dismiss the role of the director in television but it is still important. Speaking of afterthoughts, I don’t think Abby or Devon or Noah Newman or Chance for that matter have been written for with much consideration over the past several years. For Noah and Devon, the most comprehensive stories which centered their characters (I’m not talking about stories where they were involved in, alongside a bunch of other people) were done in their teenage years. Chance, well, did he much of a chance? His relationship with overpowering Chloe-had they kept her as Kate Valentine, the daughter of the maid involved with Chance, the son of a Chancellor and grandson of Jill Abbott, corporate impresario- it should have been interesting but both characters are underwritten, (Chance more than Chloe) so it was forgettable (I admit to tuning out during most of that time). Cassie could have been a well developed character, as we got to watch her grow up but the show decided to inexplicably kill her off in favor of giving Nick yet another avenue to jump into bed with someone other than his wife (and let’s face it, wasn’t that what the story really boiled down to? Oh yeah and we got the runaway teens storyline, which wasn’t half bad but not worth flushing an actress who could actually act). I know people say they are bored with the Devon character (which sometimes reads as them not liking Bryton, it’s hard to distinguish which one) but Devon and Hilar worked as a couple and the actors had entertainment value as those characters interacting with each other, that’s something you don’t always get on Y&R. Okay, to actually answer your question, I see it as a combination of factors but lack of consideration for writing both the characters and situations (sometimes it feels as if whoever is writing doesn’t know these characters at all) as well as poor direction in terms of how scenes and stories play out is another. One thing I always want to know is, what is said character’s fears, dreams, what do they want? I don’t mean professionally but as a human being. Does Abby or Devon or Noah have any fears about their personal relationships? Look at the way Abby and Devon got together…are there any fears about the fidelity of their relationship? Because there should be, given each of their histories. Are there any temptations? There should be. There ought to be some tensions there, or else, why even have them be a couple? This is not the time to have them function as an offscreen couple. If there is no conflict, there’s no drama and there’s no point. This goes for every other character. Most of what I read gives the impression that many of these characters are treading water dramatically.
  8. Yes, I remember when Sinclair started doing this script across multiple stations agenda, and they’re still at it, I see. SMH.
  9. Even though I don’t watch this show, I feel for this young man. To be grabbed like that is dehumanizing and leaves you feeling stunned and powerless in that moment. I can only imagine the added feeling of humiliation from it being simultaneously live-streamed. Power's Michael Rainey Jr. Says He's 'Still Processing' After Being Sexually Assaulted on Livestream
  10. Did KSJ’s estate and will disputes ever get resolved? I wonder what Allana Nadal thinks of all this?
  11. The other side of that is, Y&Rwill write dozens and dozens of episodes of grief episodes centering Victor and Jack and perhaps some Ashley, followed by years of tribute episodes. Those episodes would eventually drain the show and all for a character who made relatively little impact, after her “Naked Heiress” days.
  12. My quote posted upthread mentioned this a few days ago. Because I do not watch any of the current daytime soaps, nor did I watch the Daytime Emmy awards, I didn’t really press the case, just mentioned it.
  13. Something weird happens with Spoutible embeds, particularly when you use the quote function in any post containing a Spoutible embedded post. The quoted text gets muddled into the regular post, so it looks like the quote is one that I made in my post, instead of me commenting on something another posted wrote. Also, embedded images and text look much smaller, compared to X and Instagram embedded content. I had assumed the problem was solely on Spoutible’s end but seeing there are similar issues with embedded content from other social media platforms, now I’m not so sure. @janea4old @Maxim Are you using tablets, by any chance?
  14. 11 minutes ago, JaneAusten said: Gabe Hoffman Wolfgabe While so many media talking heads were proclaiming a far right sweep in European elections today, in reality outside of France it has been by all accounts a disaster for the far right. Many polls showed the ID party gaining 20% of seats. They will end up with less than 10%. 07:41 PM - Jun 09, 2024 4 20 45 Sorry about the last post. I can't seem to edit it. I wanted to say the story in the US is how the far right prevailed. I saw the story in the Economist about how the far right did not achieve prediction estimates and how the middle held. It's almost like the US media is deliberately puffing up Trump and the polls to manufacture something more devious in November - riots by Trump cultists when Trump loses. data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAPABAP///wAAACH5BAEKAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAICRAEAOw== This spout I posted this morning should also have included Germany but seems clear-eyed in analysis so far. Observing what has been happening with The New York Times and The Washington Post, it’s safe to say, the majority of the most prominent media here in the U.S. is in something of a shambles. Grabbing for the next available dollar seems to take precedence over good quality journalism and news reportage. I guess it’s inevitable when you have corporate “titans” running these newspapers-the quest for profits takes priority. @JaneAusten I see what you’re saying. I wonder if the Spoutible code is somehow clashing with the code on this message board? Quoting any post with a Spoutible embed doesn’t seem to work very well. Things are garbled.
  15. Does anyone know for sure what the financing model for “The Gates” will be? I am sincerely asking because I wonder if the financing will be the same or similar to the traditional network soap opera model or will it be something similar to an international media model? Or perhaps some hybrid form? I would be interested in looking at the financing numbers, which would give me a clearer idea of what the producers are working with which would most likely determine the overall look of the show. In terms of promotion, I hope MVJ will hew more closely something like how Shonda Rhimes has promoted built a loyal following for her series- from Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal to Bridgerton. The only promotion tactic from traditional daytime soaps that I would use is the ruthless tactic that Bell Productions and CBS employed when promoting the Bold and the Beautiful before its debut by relentlessly airing teasers during the shows in their daytime lineup, including Capitol, the show getting the boot, paving the way for B&B’s debut. Oops, how could I forget How To Get Away With Murder?! I think Scandal and How To Get Away With Murder had a very large cultural imprint with viewers as does Bridgerton now.

  17. Since they’re not even trying anymore, NBC just needed to let what little coverage they were providing go. It’s so shabby. Honestly, I don’t know whether this is a step up or a lateral move at this point. I read that TNT is making some changes with their NBA coverage and many are unhappy about this. I don’t know about any of these television outlets and their commitment to tennis. It sure doesn’t seem like anyone is talking about ‘growing the game’ like they used to. As for the men’s and women’s finals- I watched most of the first set of yesterday’s women’s final and between the diminished confidence of Paolini and the unbearable commentary, my attention started to drift to what was going on outside. A beautiful Saturday morning, with clear, bright sunny skies and moderate breezes…and I was out of there! Today’s match was at the very least, more intriguing if predictable. Never for one moment did I think Zverev was in any danger of winning that match…not even when Alcaraz called the trainer. When Mary Carillo, of all people, stated that Zverev was composed (or some such description) and that he seemed unfazed and not panicked, I nearly did a spit take. Then my next thought was that, “yeah sure his on court demeanor is calm, but off court, he will take it out on someone). What a disaster in the commentary booth are Carillo and McEnroe! Of tennis doesn’t want to drop behind pickle ball, they’ve got to come up with a more sustainable approach than this.
  18. I completely forgot about the Daytime Emmy awards, but I wonder if MVJ wants to reveal anything other than a tagline before the fall. Still, someone could have said “…coming soon to your television screens, the first daytime drama to debut on CBS in nearly 40 years…” which could have lended some sense of intrigue to things. Oh well, daytime, especially CBS Daytime stopped putting effort into promoting these soaps a number of years ago. 🤷🏾‍♀️
  19. The Sister Act 2 reunion on The View has been a hot topic over the past week and in this interview, Tanya Trotter (née Blount) says that she and Lauryn Hill auditioned in NYC and Lauryn had just gotten off of acting on the…er, The Young and the Restless. 😬
  20. That is my hope as well. There’s a very fine line, especially when the subject of the documentary is not here to speak for himself.
  21. Wow, I completely and utterly forgot that this was on tonight! I never thought I would see the day when the Daytime Emmy awards would completely fall off my radar! 🤯
  22. Some of those images made my heart sink. The documentary that Kristoff worked on that detailed his abuse in that cult showed also be shown alongside this documentary. As hard as it is for us to watch watch that trailer, it must be doubly hard for his daughters.
  23. BBC World News reported on reaction to Rishi Sunak’s decision to leave to do the ITV interview. In this day and age of technological innovation, couldn’t ITV have done a remote? Whoever keeps his calendar and books his media should have requested that the reporter come to France or they do an interview via video conference. Not the finest choice was made by team Sunak. Seems like the British public are hot to get rid of the Tories from power and it increasingly looks like Sunak could be at the helm when his party gets the boot.
  24. Wow, I had no idea that Zverev took a plea deal. I saw your post @Soapsudsand went searching for more information. ESPN a network that barely cares about tennis at least has a modest write up on it, while tennis channel’s website doesn’t appear to have posted anything- if they have, I can’t find it.
