I only ever saw a partial version of this episode until now so put the full version on Youtube. I don't think we're in a hurry go to back to 1996 but @alwaysAMC as you finished this period not long ago you may enjoy it. @P.J. I also found an ad about Billy's return to Springfield. There were a few ATWT episodes on Archive that I couldn't find on Youtube so I uploaded them (if I just missed them, my apologies). Sometimes I think, "Was 1996 really any better just because so much after was horrible?" I don't watch enough of 1996 to answer my question. I did skim through this episode and there's one scene I appreciated - Kim bonding with Dani and wanting her to move into the Hughes home because of how much Betsy meant to her. (just another reason the show never properly bringing Betsy back, not even in Dani's stay, was such a bad idea) 1989 is not complete, but I couldn't find it on Youtube (the original upload said June 26th but the Y&R seemed to be the 27th so I just went with it - if I'm wrong, I'll correct) and I thought putting more Marland, even incomplete, was worthwhile. Marland never uses the term, as I'm not sure if the term existed at that time, but it took me a while to pick up on how he details Emily essentially grooming him, as James had done to her, even if she did not fully realize what she was doing. Andy Kavovit and Melanie Smith worked so well together and there were many layers to their relationship. Something the show loses with the later poor recasts of Emily and Paul (the characters they were in the finale bear no resemblance to who they are here). On a lighter note, the episode has a fun scene with Duke lip synching to "Duke of Earl" as Pam, Lien and Andy back him up. This was probably Marland's idea of a rebel (straight out of the '50s), but it made me smile, which we always need more of.

I used to laugh at the "meaningful glance" moments and how cold and stylized the show was in that time, but looking back now, I appreciate that Bill Bell was giving Y&R its own identity. Something that the show has sorely lacked for many years.

I think Genie has some resentment toward Laura as well, and that is part of why she wanted to play roles that were meant to be more interesting (like Caera and whoever the hell she was on Y&R), but she always seemed more clear-eyed than Tony. I guess because she never got away with what he got away with. She also had to put up with much more than he did.

Tristan was on Y&R when Tony left GH.

That's what I was most put off by about the Guza years. He hated everything about GH. He likely resented having to slum on a soap instead of his failed film career. I can't even say he had a righteous objection to Luke and Laura. It wasn't the rape that he seemed to object to as much as he objected to every single part of the show. This is the same writer who had a woman told that she was only worthwhile as a person when she was bleeding in the snow after being raped, and we were meant to agree with this.

I can see why he at least had some basic respect for Claire but not for them. Pure Soap was a great show, at least for a while, and treated viewers with intelligence. Thanks for reminding us.

I think they still would, those who are left, because of nostalgia or habit. They know the show used to be better.

Thanks @Vee Geary was absolutely seething. You can see all his resentment laid bare for Luke's return, and likely the Labines, that would fester later on. I think they were right to not have a shot with the two Gearys together. It added to the power to just go from one to another. I can see where he might have felt Bill was underserved, but no one gave a damn about Bill. Logan was, as always, carrying water for his soap friends in that bit about how Bill struggled due to so many different writers. No, Bill just stunk as a character.

Thanks for comparing the lighting styles over the years. I never notice that myself. I can appreciate that GH was competently produced for many years but by the time I started watching GH in the mid/late '90s there was a certain haze which did nothing to make me feel less enervated as the show got duller and duller.

Happy New Year! We had a thread in the main soap section talking about AI generating stories and some old soap stories that never were (like Jessie's GH exit or Michael Randolph coming out as gay or bi) if you had any thoughts on them.

I don't know how many viewers would have cared. A lotof that triangle didn't have Melissa and that version wasn't very popular with viewers. Even if Melissa agreed to play it, he was basically some guy Jennifer sort of loved for a few years because she thought he was good and Jack was unreliable. I do think it's a waste for Jack and Jennifer to have zero involvement, but even if they did, their days as central characters are long gone. I just hope that while they have Dan Gauthier they will come up with something of value for him.

I am never sure about Tessa's backstory. I know she was married to some guy before she was on the show. Is this one of those arcs where they said being with woman made her realize she'd never liked men, but now she does again?

There are clips of her on Youtube but most of them just have her as a talk-to before she vanishes (that's when the show was firing a lot of people due to budget). Hopefully Night Shift 2 will pop up in better condition sometime. You'd think ABC might make a few bucks with it.

Looking at Kavovit's Wiki page there are also mentions that he was "strongly considered" for Noah on Passions in 2002 and "in talks and auditioned for" Rafe on DAYS. I cannot imagine him as Rafe, to put it kindly, but, while I liked Dylan Fergus, Andrew might have been OK as Noah. I didn't know they had considered bringing Noah in in 2002. I did wonder why they waited so long to bring Noah on.

It's always something to see the memories of soap actors. I saw a Locher Room reel where Andy Kavovit said he started on ATWT when he was 12. He was actually about 15.

Thanks @Vee I had never listened to Tiffany's cameo so found it on Youtube. I'm very glad Sharon was willing, and I liked how they managed to splice it together through a phone conversation with Laura. And kudos to them for remembering Sean's son Connor, who is probably only remembered by longtime fans for one reason. I agree that Brad playing another character who just looks like Tony (and probably is a con, with a heart of gold) is a good idea. I didn't know for a long time that John and Sharon were briefly reunited on Passions, but it wasn't much of a reunion, as their history amounted to him keeping her locked away for years and repeatedly raping her.
