THIS STORY WAS AMAZING!!!

Deidre Hall was fantastic. This was my all time favorite story on Days. I wish they would put it out on DVD-they would make a mint. I would love to find out where I could fine the complete set of tapes of this story if anyone has them-it would cost a mint but I love this story.

Marlena levitating (one of the best scenes ever with people singing at the church and her rising from the bed), the panther, Fr. Francis, painting the symbols on Kristen. the desecrater, the lasting image of Marlena with arms in air happy that St. Luke's is burning, the bees attacking Granpa Shawn, Marlena showing up nude, Marlena/Curtis/Sami, the various attempts at seducing John, the meteor showers, Kristen/Marlena fights. the slap/contact scene, the exorcism, Marlena "dying," the showdown in the morgue and John carrying Marlena to church, John and Marlena standing in the rain when it all ended, Caroline/Mike/Celeste involvement, that angel John had named Gabe, Marlena throwing Stefano out the window (that shocked the hell out of me), Isabella as a demon-loved all of it.

Thanks for the caps Kenny-I had forgotten Marlena had interactions with Kate, Carrie, etc too. Lisa Rinna in one of those caps looks like Julie Pinson does right now with the hair (those two could be sisters).

Thanks again-I wish they would put this on DVD or I could find this somewhere. This story, Maison Blanche. Aremid, and Carly buried alive-all of them I wish I could get. This story tops them all though.

I agree about the lighting and music-so much better back then. Days really needs to look back at this stuff and see how it is done. This was creepy, gothic-so much awesomeness. I LOVED IT!!

Oh my God, JER was just insanely on FIRE back then. Damn, that was good. Now how's about posting some of this on YouTube for the unfortunate? :)

Oh, man. Wow, that was such a rollercoaster ride. Oh, man. JER, now that you're back at "Passions," do something HUGE like THIS!! We all know you can do it, so just effing DO it already!!!

I agree JER needs to do something HUGE like this. He has done supernatural stuff before on Passions but he needs something big. Maybe Theresa or Sheridan will become possesed  ?

I wish Days would go back to storytelling like this-gothic, dark, etc. They won't now do with JER gone. Had Corday not tamed him I know we would've gotten stuff like this during the SSK period. There were major hints if going back to stuff like this but then it stopped. Corday should have just stayed out of it because this formula worked well for Days before and it would've worked well again. Hogan won't do stuff like this but who knows. It works if done right but I think he will give us more traditional soap opera stuff.

Great screen caps, Kenny!!

One of my all time favorite storylines.

Every beat of this story was awesome.

I was quite young and didn't watch Days consistently when this storyline took place. Those screen caps are amazing and give me a better idea of the "great Possession story" everyone speaks of. Marlena looks freaky with those eyes.

Oh I am sorry you haven't seen it. You need to see some clips or something because this was amazing-too good to be missed. :)

This is JER at his best and when no one interferes with his writing.

Actually, as great as this story was for me, the supernatural aspect was a bit much for some viewers. I think that the best of Reilly was actually stuff like Carly buried alive, Maison Blanche, the John/Marlena affair, Carrie/Austin/Sami (round 1... AWESOME!), Hope's return, Lady in a Cage and The Secret Room. All of this stuff was incredible, and involved no supernatural at all... yet most of it was all still very dark, mysterious and dramatic. The show had a very rich, high-stakes feel back then.

I agree Kenny but what I liked about everything JER did was that it still had some traditional soap involved. At the root of the posession was John's love for Marlena. Marlena got possessed because she was vulnerable due to her feeling guilt and responsibility over her divorce from Roman and that led to Stefano's little visits of brainwashing. That is what led to her getting possessed and why I loved the posession the best. All of JER's stories had traditional soap at the root of them even if they were primarily supernatural stories. THat is what makes me mad about JER"s last run-if Corday had just let him write who knows what would've happened. Days looked like it did in the 90's under JER when he first returned but then the island (and Corday) hit and messed it all up  .

I know some people were turned off by the possession but I have learned that you can't please every Days fan. All those other stories you mentioned were amazing though. 1992-1998 for me was amazing. I loved pretty much everything to be honest but the posession ranks the best for me.

This is Jimmy Reilly (IMO) at his finest hour. If DAYS released a complete series of "The Posession" on DVD, I would probably advance copy it on Amazon.

I think without this storyline, I probably wouldn't even like or be remotely addicted to soaps. I always thought they were way too romantic. So much so, when I first started watching daytime, I often fastforwarded through the love scenes.

This is why I never fully dismiss Reilly like a lot of people on this board do.

Reilly would NEVER have been able to pull this off on PASSIONS. A) Budget is too low. B) The acting sucks C) Posession for him would last for three years instead of two good seasons. And D) Any attempt to make story like this goth would be more laughed at than when posession on DAYS first happened.

Sad to say it, but Reilly's DAYS are over. Hope he wisely invested his money.

But any......*sigh* I loved Posession!

I have some clips that I could send you. EVERYONE should get to see Possession. Deidre was just phenomenal. That's the year the Emmys proved what utter crap they are.

That's so true. Yes, it was far out sci-fi wise, but in the end, it was all about love. It was about John and Marlena fighting to survive and to love each other. Marlena punished herself for the affair with John, she was vunerable because of that and because of Stefano's nightly visits. The Possession was about John fighting, and giving up everything, to save the woman he loves. It was part of the road to J&M getting back together. The devil realized what fans already knew, that John's only weakness was Marlena. MarDevil transformed herself into Kristen to seduce him, which naturally didn't work. But once he turned Marlena into someone who was constantly letting John admit how he really felt... magic. The seductions. The looks. That was chemistry at its best. That's when I was hooked for life. I already loved Marlena and Deidre was my favourite actress, I was a J&M fan above all, but the Possession is what just signed the deal, I HAD to watch. The chemistry, the acting from Deidre (Possession also had some of Drake's best work) - I don't get how they didn't get a nom. She won FAVOURITE actress though, so s'all good ;)

Leaving you with a little quote...

"Each time Deidre Hall and Drake Hogestyn (John and Marlena) are on screen, sparks fly. This couple creates a chemistry that cannot be matched in all of daytime, and for them now to be involved in the eclectic and extraordinary "Satan in Salem" storyline is only proof that their chemistry is so igniting that the devil himself wants them in hell to keep the flames burning." - Soap Opera Weekly, May 9, 1995.

"Possession" is my favourite story in soap opera history. I was sooo addicted to Days back then. I totally freaked out when she became re-possessed for a couple of episodes back in 2004----loved it! :D

I hope JER does a possession story with Sheridan on Passions. I think she might be able to prove herself as a talented actress if she got to do that. I mean, he already buried her alive, so possessing her isn't too much of a stretch!

Mackenzie Westmore isen't strong enough an actress to handle that story.

In James Reilly's words...

"It was an incredibly difficult role. Someone else would have destroyed it, but it's as much a love story as Marlena and John on the plane. Their relationship is the constant, the most central to all the other stories." - James Reilly on Deidre Hall in The Possession, "Star of the Week", Soap Opera Weekly '96.

I also notice that in seeing Kenny's screencaps, the hair and makeup was so much better back then. It's really disappointing to see that when DAYS does special events, like weddings, they leave the actresses' hair so limp for the most part. Sami and Carrie's hair was gorgeous during the 90s, and now it looks like they just rolled out of bed, fluffed their hair with their hands, and off they go. I know it doesn't have to be glamour all the time, but I'd like to see a little more effort put back into it.

BTW, Passions already did a similar story when Charity was wearing the evil pendant that made her go bad--she had glowing red eyes and the possessed Marlena voice, way back from July-October 2000.

Love or Hate Deidre Hall there is no denying she was amazing during the possession.
