I think the large amount of viewers who would be offended by the political references wouldn't be watching a show with a pre-dominantly African American cast, but I have been wrong before. A show that has a central character who is a gay African American politician with ambitions to be the first out president doesn't seem like a show that is going to ignore what could be a huge moment in this country's history.

People have different reasons for watching soaps. Some do want pure escapism and fictional drama. Others would prefer drama that is based on character and social issues. Some want a little bit of everything.  Furthermore, some of the character outlines suggest issues that I don't really feel are escapist (drug problems, sexual harassment in the work place, and possibly even white washing for professional advancement). Also, given the number of couples that are already paired off it doesn't seem like this is the vein of escapist fantasy, but (again) I could be wrong.

I was just thinking if it's going to be surrounding BB or YR or where it's placed in the schedule by affiliates and with CBS wanting some of the other soap viewers to sample the show deliberately adding real life events on top of an already progressive show might be one step too far. At least with a fictional character being gay it's a story so might to some people be easier to accept.

No you're right they are certainly sending a message that it isn't going to be a conservative show or one where their sensibilities are going to be cared about but sadly when have conservatives complained or boycotted a show they have actually watched.

As crazy as it sounds though drug abuse, sexual harassment in a fictional setting can be escapist in the form of high drama and creating stories so you care about the characters. I just think the outlines and descriptions are meant to say it isn't going to be plodding or anything like the other soaps. I could be wrong too.

Politics is no longer an off-limits topic because more and more people have been forced ro be political. It can be touched upon without being heavy handed within the fictional universe.

I'd think that the issue with politics on soap has been the issue of putting viewers, advertisers and affiliates off.

Wasn’t Scandal a soap, albeit a primetime soap? I don’t think daytime dramas can rebuild relevance without some risk.
I get a lot of reports concerning the state of the entertainment industry and the studies cited illustrate that topical subject matter with diverse BIPOC casts tends to result in very successful ratings and box office. Shondaland was built on this principle. Something tells me that Rhimes might just be a major influence on what MVJ is trying to achieve.

Not to mention, no one is stated it's going to be PRESIDENTIAL politics, as there are many facets of the political game. This wold be involving the Senate, with patriarch "Patrick" being a retired Senator. "Marcus," thus far, is the only character we've been made aware of who has a career in politics, as a congressman, with the desire of becoming the first Black openly gay President. Everyone else appears to be in the law career or medical career; again, we don't know all characters et al, but from what we know....

Never heard of a single one! Probably good news.

Oh wait, I know Timon Durrett from Queen Sugar. He's so fine.

Joining the daytime drama about an affluent African American county in Maryland are Brandon Claybon, Timon Durrett, Sean Freeman, Marquita Goings, Maurice Johnson, Trisha Mann-Grant, RhonniRose Mantilla, Ambyr Michelle, Colby Muhammad and Arielle Prepetit. They join previously announced stars Tamara Tunie (Anita Dupree), Daphnee Duplaix (Dr. Nicole Dupree Richardson) and Karla Mosley (Dani Dupree).

Here’s a breakdown of the characters:

Maurice Johnson (Chicago Fire) stars as Ted Richardson, husband to Dr. Nicole Dupree Richardson and father to Martin and Kat. Ted is a brilliant plastic surgeon with an ultra-exclusive private practice.

Brandon Claybon (Grey’s Anatomy) stars as Martin Richardson. Martin, who is gay, is a congressman who lives outside the gates in a Washington, D.C.

Newcomer Colby Muhammad stars as Kat, who lives in her parents’ guest house. Kat’s been indulged all her life, which has made her spoiled, entitled and dismissive of those she considers beneath her.

Sean Freeman (Finding Happy) stars as Andre Hamilton, nephew of Ted Richardson. Andre tragically lost his parents in a plane crash and inherited a double fortune, which allows him to live his bliss as a photographer.

Timon Durrett (Queen Sugar) stars as Bill Hamilton, Dani Dupree’s ex-husband and father to Naomi and Chelsea. Bill is an opportunist, publicity hound and narcissist, according to his ex-wife, Dani.

Arielle Prepetit (BMF) stars as Naomi Hamilton Hawthorne, Dani Dupree and Bill Hamilton’s oldest daughter and Chelsea’s older sister. Naomi lives outside the gates, where she humbly serves as a civil attorney.

Newcomer RhonniRose Mantilla stars as Chelsea Hamilton, Dani Dupree and Bill Hamilton’s youngest daughter and Naomi’s younger sister. Chelsea is a social media influencer and has been a successful but reluctant high fashion model since she was 18.

Marquita Goings (Woke) stars as Hayley Lawson, a paralegal at Bill Hamilton’s firm. Hayley is gorgeous, intelligent, charming, witty and the new fiancée of Dani Dupree’s ex-husband, Bill Hamilton.

Trisha Mann-Grant (Family Business) stars as Dana “Leslie” Thomas, Eva Thomas’ mom and a long-time waitress and bartender. Dana “Leslie” is not wrapped all that tight and intense, but she’s charming and easy out in the world.

Ambyr Michelle (Snowfall) stars as Eva Thomas, Dana “Leslie” Thomas’ daughter and Nicole Dupree Richardson’s new assistant, who vibrates with intensity and purpose.

So this is "Marcus", or what was perceived as the name for him. I wonder who his husband is or did they decide to eliminate that? And where's Patrick in this ensemble?

Well, so much for all the fan driven dream casting, hah. This explains why they weren't dribbling out names and waited to announce a large group. They'll save the remaining bigger names (whether from soaps or elsewhere) til close to premiere.

Between the political angle and the casting, definitely feels like they are going for the streaming audience and not the network soap audience.

They seemed to have announced others outside of the Dupree family, and I doubt "David" has been nixed, because even the press release mentions he lives with his husband. I have a feeling they're holding out on the final round of castings ⏤ the recurring roles and the role of "Patrick" ⏤ until the end.

Oh this is gonna be exciting. Unheard names, good.

Unheard of to daytime, mostly. Brandon Claybon did a stint on General Hospital as one of Curtis' physical therapists. So, thankfully, he should know how not to act on a soap opera.

Hopefully these relative unknowns can act or have a lot of charisma/sex appeal. Soaps are reliant on creating new/breakout performers, so this will be crucial to the success of this new show regardless of what the creative material entails.
