In May 82 ABC announced Agnes Nixon's new show (Loving) so that had over a year of official development.

They also announced Young Loves of GH but that never got off the ground.

I stumbled across this video while watching clips of Sunset Beach on YouTube, and the 2:35 mark outlining how they would promote the show made me think of you all regarding the marketing and promotion of The Gates...

This video is hilarious because almost none of it ended up being true. It’s interesting that NBC hyped this up so much and talked about how much faith they had in it for Sunset Beach to be largely undermined by NBC’s own affiliates right from launch.

Yup. And it's partially why I've always felt Sunset Beach should have been on Fox (giving it a place among ABC, CBS and NBC as one of the "Big Three" or "Big Four" networks), and I do think Fox would have given it its fair chance. But, instead, Aaron Spelling and co. were at NBC, as Sunset Beach was developed as a replacement for Santa Barbara as a way of NBC trying to rebuild its NBC Daytime programming lineup.

I will saw that back in the 1960s, the concept of Dark Shadows took over a year between his pitch and the first episode coming together.

They jumped the gun just a bit on Dark Shadows, too, promoting it while it was still a work in progress.  In the promos that aired on ABC a few days before the show started -- they're posted on You Tube -- remote footage filmed in Newport, Rhode Island, with Alexandra Moltke, was used, along with the theme music.  The graphics are wrong in some of the promos, and the voiceover says, "Victoria Winters probes the mysteries of Collins House."  A week or two later, when the series started, "Collins House" was no more, and "Collinwood" had taken its place.

I recently saw the "60-day-notice" of Capitol (CBS-1982) in the newspaper.  Sixty days before the show premiered, they provided only the name of the show, the headwriters, the producer, and teased one storyline (Tyler McCandless & Julie Clegg).  The article specifically stated that no casting had occurred yet for any of the roles.

I believe CBS is actively promoting "The Gates"; but they don't want to issue a bunch of false information that Michele subsequently changes.

I feel like anything short of posting an advertisement for the show on the side of the Goodyear blimp as it flies over the Super Bowl will be a disappointment for some folks, lol.

Again, can't please anyone these days. It's either not enough or it's too much.

Some news, shows that CBS is really behind this project, IMO:

CBS Teams With NuTime Media to Sell Ads for New Soap Opera ‘The Gates’

This is good that CBS realizes that they are out of their depth and don’t have the in-house talent (at least not in the numbers they need) in marketing to potential viewers, particularly Black viewers, therefore they are asking for help on the matter. It also tells me that they want this show’s production to have strong financial footing by getting strong ad revenue.

It’s a promising start.

I might even watch The Gates live, if this news means that every commercial won't be for mesothelioma lawsuits or dental hygienist colleges. 😉

I really can't wait to see what kind of vibe this show gives off. Will it be old-fashioned soap tropes or something remarkably fresh and new? Maybe a combination of both? I suppose the NAACP is involved as a consultant. They'll assist with storyline ideas while MVJ and her team puts it on script. I suspect this will be more interesting than we know.

it makes sense Michele would want her friends to help her on her show. Thankfully, neither Guza nor Carruthers are actually steering the actual ship.

Assuming the other writer they refuse to name is Patrick Mulcahey...
