“Presumed Dead” Characters Actually Alive But Audience Knows the Whole Time

I was thinking about Phyllis faking her death on Y&R and how bad the story had turned out. What are some good (and bad) examples of stories in which a character is believed to be dead by the other characters (or at least most of them), but the audience immediately knows that the character is still alive and living a different life elsewhere? This could be due to the character faking their death, being kidnapped, or suffering from amnesia.

I'm looking for a different type of story than the ones where an actor leaves the show and the character is presumed dead but later revealed to be alive, like Reva's story on GL or Phillip’s and Adam’s returns on Y&R. In the type of story I'm interested in, the character doesn't actually leave the show and is featured continuously.

I’m thinking of Victor and his summer with Hope on Y&R, Katharine being presumed dead when Marge was killed on Y&R, or Sonny on GH having amnesia and living a life as bartender Mike, discovered by Nina. Which ones had the best or worst reveals? (Sonny being alive on GH was so meh, but Victor’s return after his time in Kansas was so great, especially Jack’s reaction.)

Regulars of the Classic GH thread are currently learning about Phil Brewer's "death" thanks to @depboy - Phil was presumed dead in a plane crash in South America in November 1969, but in same episode where Lee announced his death, the audience saw him comatose in a hospital under an assumed name. He woke up shortly afterwards and in March 1970 he snuck back in to the States using the alias Harold Williamson. It shouldn't be long before the summaries start to cover Phil's meeting with Diana Maynard, later better known as Diana Taylor.

Funny you should mention Reva and Philip. Yes, she was presumed dead when Zimmer left in 1990, and we were told Philip died with the who killed Philip story, but in 1990, we saw Philip, Beth and Rick fake his death when he was accused of killing Beth's ex Neil. I actually thought the story was fun when he ran into India and she returned to Springfield, and Mallet was introduced on to them. There was a hilarious scene where Beth snuck out of the house to see Philip dressed as India, and India put a basketball under her shirt pretending to be pregnant Beth, only to hear Mallet say, "that's not Beth!" But there was the complication with Mindy as she felt Beth and Rick were shutting her out of grieving the 4th musketeer with them, I believe they got married, and it pushed Mindy further into Roger's arms. And with Reva, remember the clone.

To clarify about Reva and the clone, Josh really believed Reva had died, and the clone was created to trick everyone to believe she was alive, as he didn't want to tell his kids that their mother died again. So he and Michael thought she was dead but we saw her on the island with Sean

Back in 1984, Carl Hutchins had his henchmen tamper with the Cory jet.  The jet crashed in the Canadian tundra, and for weeks everyone assumed that Mac was dead.  The episode below heavily features this storyline only to find out that Mac is very much alive in the Friday cliffhanger.

    • One thing I thought about is if Hayley will have a reaction to Bill threatening to kidnap and sell a baby. That's another level of viciousness and with her just having thought she was pregnant it might make her feel some type of way.
    • You're welcome. Fall 1982-Spring 1985 was the peak of primetime soaps. What a time to have been alive.
    • 1990/91 Cheers, Roseanne, A Different World, The Cosby Show, Empty Nest, The Golden Girls were still Top 10 shows, and Murphy Brown and Designing Women became Top 10 shows. It was the following season that I think was the transition season for sitcoms.
    • @xtr I loved Martin in Thursday's episode, he was almost a different character. I thought he was flirty, funny, carefree, and giggly. Glad I have someone to share my top 2 women(Nicole and Eva) with, I agree Nicole is the heart of the Dupree family, and also the heart of the show IMO. We rode into the show on the passenger side of her car, lol. What I am enjoying the most about the show, is that they did such a great job character building, because all I care about is the CHARACTER journey. Nicole, Eva, Leslie, Dani, Chelsea, etc. very invested in what's coming next. I even feel that way about Mona, Shanice, and Doug.
    • I know we have discussed the fact that Another World seemed to be planning a location shoot in Finland that got cancelled. I came across this item from the syndicated Soapbox column published June 14, 1982. "Soap operas have been experimenting extensively with on-location shooting in recent years to enhance storylines and increase their viewing audience. A major drawback is the added production costs involved. Another World, for example, cancelled a special trip for Victoria Wyndham (Rachel Cory on the show), who was scheduled to shoot scenes in Finland. The producers felt that the high price tag, along with resentment of the cast members who also wanted to travel but were to be left behind. was enough to scrap the whole project."
    • A few more thoughts about these last two episodes. I thought it was interesting how much disdain both Dani/Anita have for Eva. I thought it was amusing how Dani was calling her lying/conniving and how Anita pointed as if to say, "that part". They definitely are not here for her, and I could see them having harsh confrontations with her in addition to Leslie. I'm curious to see Kat's interaction with Eva on Monday's episode. I think it might be interesting if Kat (along with possibly Naomi/Chelsea) come around to Eva before Dani/Anita do. Of course, Kat will be understandably angry at her. But maybe a tiny part of her might feel sorry for her if she really does believe that she's Ted's daughter as well and that Leslie lied to her. I could see Kat confronting Eva again and warning her not to harm her family anymore. But I could also possibly see Kat admitting that what Ted/Leslie did regarding her was messed up as well. And maybe that will pave the way down the line for them to get along better. I also agree with the comments/speculation made in the threat that Nicole will eventually accept/probably love her someday as well. I still wouldn't mind if somehow Nicole ended up being her biological mother. They have both been acting like they care for each other in this storyline. Nicole somehow ending up being her mother would be soapy and provide some more interesting layers in this story. And regarding Andre/Dani's romance it seems like they are genuinely developing feelings for each other. I have missed episodes, so maybe more of this has been elaborated on. But it seemed like there was genuine affection between both of them when they snuck a kiss publicly in the hotel. And also, them both talking about going publicly with their relationship. I wonder what everyone's reactions will be should they be caught by someone together. Of if they flat out tell everyone about their relationship.
    • I was wondering what week it was, and it explains the low rating for Knots Landing. I was also wondering what preempted Dallas and Falcon Crest.
    • Interesting take on Dallas. Frankly I think the plot of JR Returns should have been the way Dallas ended but for whatever reason they thought they had the chance to get renewed for another season lol. A week later Knots’ 2 hour season finale ranked at #10 against Cheers #3 and LA Law at #5. There’s only a handful of other shows running that long and still doing well enough the ratings/rankings i.e. Gunsmoke, Law & Order, NCIS, Grey’s Anatomy and more recently Blue Bloods.    Another point of interest is the unraveling of the 80’s sitcoms had already begun in the spring of ‘91. The first part of a Who’s The Boss? two part season finale we see here ranked at  #40 and second part ranked at #43 the following week. Growing Pains finale the previous week barely made it into the Top 30. The Wonder Years fared no better. Cosby losing ground, Night Court and Dear John just being there etc.
    • I'm glad a lot of people are continuing to enjoy this show.

I haven't posted in a few weeks and have some catching up to do. But I did manage to look at the last two episodes after hearing about how good they were. I really enjoyed them. My thoughts on them: The affair/secret child reveal was very good. TMG was really good as Leslie, her whole confrontation with Ted/revealing all to the Duprees was very entertaining. I continue to love AM/Eva. She my top two favorites on the show (along with Nicole). I have a lot of sympathy for Eva and how she was conflicted/ultimately felt guilty about publicly revealing the truth to everyone. I wonder what will happen to her next, especially if she does go and live with the Doctor that is friends with Ted and Nicole. I lol'ed at how Martin/Smitty jumped up and grabbed Leslie when Eva was calling her crazy. The way they did that was funny to me. I haven't liked many of Martin's actions/his attitude especially regarding Smitty/his children, but I think it was interesting how he wanted to check Ted for his actions. And also wanted Bill to be questioned/confronted about his as well. I haven't been the biggest fan of the character of Andre, but I appreciated his calm and measured approach after the reveal and how he talked with Eva. I thought it was interesting that he knew about the affair and convinced Ted not to tell Nicole. Speaking of Nicole, I continue to love her character and view her as the heart of this show/Dupree family. I am interested in seeing where her journey goes as a character after this reveal. I'm looking forward to her leaning on Dani and (also Anita/Vernon, etc...) for a change.
