Best/Worst Written Soap Affairs

Sounds like it. Almost forgot about Tammy.

Aside from the big affairs: Rick Webber, Susan Moore, Phelipe, Sean Donnely, Lucy and Piers Dorman there were the ones with less notiriety. Charity, Tammy, Rhonda, Bobbie, Rick 2002 (a flirtation I believe). Were there any more I missed? I think Alan had something going with Amy around the time of his addiction.

Of the biggies, just Ned. He and Monica hooked up before he came to town in fall '88, with Alan finally finding out in summer '90. I didn't know that about Amy during the addiction storyline. If I remember correctly, Amy had a crush on Alan back in '79-'80, when they teamed up to outsmart Tracy regarding A.J.'s parentage. I guess they figured Susan would be a better character as Alan's mistress rather than Amy.

yes Ned!

Jeez thats roughly 11 affairs between the both of them. Although the cheating stuff never really got old --partly because the Qs remained married -- did the writers ever think "maybe this is enough", lol!

I remember, seeing a scene with Alan and Amy kissing sometime after the Monica/Dorman liason, but before or during the addiction storyline.

I suppose a good question for this thread is Alan and Monica's affairs ranked best to worst?

Nice idea.

1. Monica & Rick, 1979-80

2. Alan & Lucy, 1989-91 (If only because Alan & Monica actually divorced.)

3. Alan & Susan, 1981-83

4. Monica & Ned, 1988 (with fallout in 1990 and 1996)

5. Sean & Monica, 1985-86

6. Monica & Pierce, 1996

7. Alan's not-exactly affairs: A tie among Gaby the nurse in '85, Charity in '86, Rhonda in '93, Bobbie in '95, Tammy in '98 and the perennial, Amy.

8. Monica's flirtations: A tie between Buzz in '85 and Rick in '02 (and I think she dated a doctor while divorced, too)

9. Monica & Philippe, 1982

Honorable mention: Monica & David (for the fallout that occurred in 1989 and 1992); Monica and Gail's first husband doesn't count because I don't think it affected her relationship with Alan.

Yeah, that was probably the best storyline that Griffiths ever wrote on Y&R of what I have seen of his tenure (I have since stopped watching) but even that doesn’t say much because it could have been so much better even before it ultimately flopped toward the conclusion. The affair should have been grounded in Michael’s constant attention to his onetime number one client: Victor Newman. Remember when Victor had Michael running all over town and it had Lauren frustrated? That would have been the perfect time to introduce Carmine into Lauren’s world. Then, it wouldn’t have been just about sex and desire but a real need for companionship and someone who makes her feel wanted. Of course, Josh doesn’t seem to understand one solitary thing about a woman’s desire and I doubt he ever will.

I don't believe there was ever any serious affair/temptation towards it portrayed between Monica and Rick on GH in 2002. At least I don't remember one. Yes, Alan chafed at his presence and it was awkward but that was about it IIRC. Which is why it galled me to discover that 5 or 6 years later they abruptly wrote in that Rick and Monica had resumed their affair offscreen shortly before his death, and Alan and Monica were written discussing it as though we were supposed to know.

Alan and Charity didn’t ever have sex. She turned him down. Alan and Rhonda kissed a couple of times but never actually had sex. They had what would probably be called an emotional affair. He never had sex with Tammy either. But not from lack of trying. His drug use made him impotent.
Also Alan didn’t have an affair with Amy. Monica accused him of having one because she misinterpreted some situations that she caught them in. Amy knew about his drug use and covered for him several times. He kept promising her he would get help.

    • I've enjoyed Vernon but I wouldn't be opposed to learning more about his life beyond his political work. What kind of family does he come from? Does he have any siblings? I feel like that could be an interesting thing to look at.
    • GH:       A- DAYS:   A- BTG:     B- B&B:     F Y&R:     F
    • I've always said, Robert Newman does not get enough credit for the popularity of Josh/Reva. Had he stayed in '91, and had years to build other relationships before Kim returned, I'm not sure we'd have been stuck with "always".
    • Bizarrely, while I didn't see it, I distinctly remember my younger sister telling me. We were walking to the store, and at the top of the hill she let out "Roger raped Holly", and I swear I remember it echoing for what seemed like forever. She would've been five at the time.  I know,,,which I find extraordinary. I have toyed with the idea of watching Another World for Maeve, Kathleen Widdoes and Beverlee. But watching Vanessa call Emma Snyder "momma" kinda weirded me out. LOL. I believe that's what I read in the recaps from the time as well. I meant, I couldn't quite believe that the audience wouldn't understand that a woman preparing to go to her engagement party  was raped. I know that on ATWT John raped Kim while they were married, resulting in Andy, but I think they shied away from calling that marital rape.
    • I have my fingers crossed for a baby to be named Monica Michelle & called Monica. And, yes, I do realize that is not equal to having her onscreen but, like you said & of course a recast is unthinkable.
    • I would love to have Monica on screen. Leslie Charleson has died. She played the role for 46 years. Monica should pass as well. No one is going to accept a long-term recast for Monica, no matter how great  the actress they could get.
    • Coming into June...   It just occurred to me that seeing Carter/Hope engaged that there was something missing. Oh, yeah! DAPHNE. I missed a few episodes, but she left, right? So is Ridge going to be the spoiler for Carter/Hope now? I felt that Daphne/Carter/Hope had more legs to it. But I guess we will see.   I did enjoy that show circling back around to Luna/Will/Electra. Katie was spitting nothing, but truth. Same for Sheila. And it's good to see Luna vs Electra, and they gave off more adversary chemistry this time around versus when they were at Deacon's.    I was happy to see Liam reduced to C plot.
    • To bring over from the May Sweeps Thread from @Chris B   I know the fashions have gotten mixed reviews but I actually like what the new costume designer is putting the cast in. It feels more modern and the more tacky pieces I feel make sense for rich people. They're buying for the brand and the price and we often see celebs in things like this. Especially for a character like Nikki, I feel the more over the top (and tacky), the more realistic it is.   I agree. While it has been hit and miss no question, I have found it fascinating to watch what the costume designer is attempting to do with the various characters and their clothes. Some have been overdue. Some have been fascinating. But (outside of Billy) not boring to watch. I definitely find it more modern as well.   My growing issue has been it's not good that the best reason to watch Y&R as of late has been to see what people are wearing rather than the writing. It feels like a red flag.
    • Haha. The fact that I stopped regularly viewing at the same time and know what you are talking about is chef's kiss.    I'm slowly bingewatching Nurse's Ball Week. But it's slow for me because a lot of the same tics and writing flaws for me that made me throw up my hands is still evident *cough*CVE*cough* Thankfully, there are some things I like also and from a glance in the GH May Thread, it seem like it had a good Sweeps with good fallout. And do I even need to mention Nina finally slapping the taste out of Carly's mouth? See? Regardless of her flaws, I do enjoy Korte-headed episodes over CVE-headed episodes because they always seem to have more emotional resonance to long-time fans.
