As far as daytime talk show hosts go, Phil Donahue and Oprah Winfrey define much of my early childhood.  Even after he'd left the airwaves, it still was hard to turn over to my local ABC affiliate and not see him on there every afternoon.  He will be missed.

Sorry to hear of Phil Donahue’s passing. Even today’s current iteration of daytime talk shows are part of the legacy of the Phil Donahue Show, knowing how Donahue inspired Oprah but the current crop of talk shows, from what I have seen don’t inspire that level of intimacy in dealing with current events. Today’s talk shows seem to feature talking points relayed by talking heads, while Donahue featured conversation between a host, guest and the audience, which were often an extension of the viewers at home. Seems like a bygone era now. R.I.P. Mr. Donahue.

The oldest living person in the world, Maria Branyas from Spain, passed away August 19, 2024 at the age of 117 (and 168 days). Her date of birth was March 4, 1907 and she became the oldest living on January 17, 2023. The last of those born in 1907, the new oldest living person is Tomiko Itooka from Japan, whose date of birth is May 23 1908, making her 116 years old. She remains one of two people born in 1908.

So, today, something a bit strange. I saw a death announcement of Robert Gentry. I felt sure it was already posted. I was right about that. He died in Sept. 2022. But, in the process of sorting that I looked at his credits. My God, I had no idea he was that prolific. Just take a look, if you have a minute.

Beginning at the beginning, sorta

What a lion of soaps, he was.

A correction: He played AW’s Philip Lyons from 1979 to 1981 and Craig Morris from 1997-1998.

Oh no!. He was such a talented coach and seemed like a chill character! What other coach could successfully coach Roger Federer and Marat Safin to major titles?! What a loss.

I was watching some classic Price Is Right on youtube and someone posted RIP to Kyle Aletter Oldham (1960-2014). She passed away July 31. I was shocked.

Kyle was the daughter of actress Lee Meriwether and actor Frank Aletter. For 14 years she was the regular substitute model on the Price Is Right (1983-1997). She recently did an episode of Maurice Benard's: State Of Mind. She discussed her Mom's battle with Alzheimer's and how she hid it for a while till Kyle noticed something was wrong... Bernard later put out a statement that Kyle disclosed she had also had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's herself after doing the podcast. They had planned to do episodes to show the effects of the disease in her life, but she passed away.

That era of music when nearly every East Coast rapper and singer had to have Fat Man Scoop’s voice on their song. This is sad.

Fatman Scoop Dead After Collapsing Onstage: DJ Was 53

And condolences to actor Todd Bridges on the loss of his mother Betty Bridges, an actress and acting coach in her own right.

So much talent on Good Times, even in the flimsiest of roles.
