The writing for black characters has been the biggest stain on soaps since forever. Most have been written to just be their job basically. Either cops, or a doctor, or the poor kid.

There is a reason Y&R was able to build such a large black audience. They did it right for awhile before they fumbled it all away.

Other than AMC in the 80's and sometimes 90s and Y&R in the 90's there been very few examples of the black characters getting to be real fleshed out characters. ATWT had some good periods with Jessica. OLTL had some moments too. RJ was allowed to be a smart villain sometimes. I also loved when Lexie went bad at Days and was the star of the show for like 3 years.

Outside of that, it really is embarrassing.

I enjoyed the way that the Frye family was written in the 90s on AMC. I loved the way that Livia was written and her relationships with Derek, Terrence, Mimi, Tom and Jamal. And the way that the Barber/Winters families were written in the 90s on Y&R. But nowadays the writing for black characters is either bad or just about non existent. Lani is begging on her knees, and isn't really fleshed out as a character, Ana was given very colorist writing on Y&R. And most of the other black characters on soaps, aren't really written much for. Or given good writing and story lines. It's a shame.

I really wish Lani was as strong and well defined as Gabi. This ''epic rivalry'' feels so one sided. I wonder if Lani will grow as a character during the Time Jump? The rumor is Lani will go bonkers. I miss how well AMC & OLTL handled AA and Hispanic characters.  ATWT also did a great job with Jessica and Tonio. Lani has never been fleshed out. Pitting Lani & Gabi could've been good with a way better HW. Gabi can easily wipe the floor with someone as meh as Lani.

I just find it ridiculous that Gabi is behaving this way over a [!@#$%^&*] DiMera.  But Lani literally begging on her knees for Stefan's heart?  That's enough to make someone dial up the NAACP!

    • Was Blake the product of Roger raping Holly, or did that come after when they were a couple?
    • I really wish we could see that episode...absolutely, my memory could be faulty, it was a very long time ago. I'm not going to contradict what the actors said--there has to be a reason it made them so uncomfortable that they talked about it in the press and complained to TPTB. I think that was the first one where they made the point that they wanted to educate the audience about the subject.
    • I just did with GL and its made me very happy!

Oh yes, trying to get into any soap from scratch starting post-2010 would be hard. I prefer to go back to the good ol' days, before the decline.
    • Can we talk about how iconic the 1994 tornado was on AMC? I was scanning through old episodes last night and came across this episode. The tornado was epic and the storylines/aftermath were so good (Julia's scar/Noah!; Jenny/Ray/Nola/Jesse in heaven with Tad, etc).  For 1994, these special effects and budget for this big event were amazing. 10 out of 10!  The only thing missing is Erica!  I can't recall where Erica was at the time, but I really wish she had been involved in this storyline.

    • On the way to her own engagement party? I've read that the show had trouble getting the audience to sympathize with Rita, but...that seems bizarre. Maybe I can understand the issue with the censors, given that at the time, rape wasn't depicted the way it is now, and marital rape was even less acknowledged.  Wasn't Chris Brooks' rape one of the first honest stories on the subject? I just don't think I could get into a show I didn't have a working knowledge of. I know it's a different era, but I really tried to get into GH once Maura West joined, but it just never jelled.
    • Yes it was! My mom and I convinced my dad to get one. He was--how shall I put this?--on the thrifty side, but one day he came home with one as a surprise. To this day, I'm convinced it fell off a truck. (He knew people with "connections."

) BUT, we had our VCR and we could watch our soaps. That thing lasted forever! It was built like a tank. Even when we got new ones with more features, we kept that one.

Blasphemy!  (Haha, I get it.  But, you should try watching AMC! 80s-90s was so good.)
    • I thought about saying how I resented the fact that those two newbies were tripping up the Puppetmaster of all Puppetmasters, when the best others could do was a stalemate (or less...). But, well...*sigh*
    • I read years ago that both Zaslow and Lenore both complained that it came off as a seduction because of CBS censors, so Lenore asked if she could say, "you raped me" to leave no doubt with the audience, and that Zaslow insisted that Holly's rape played realistically
    • Wow it’s official, Gatwa is out… https://www.avclub.com/ncuti-gatwa-addresses-doctor-who-finale-statement DW fandom on Reddit is in a furor over how things went down and apparent last minute scrapping of the original ending. Also…Billie Piper again really?
