It's odd that 30 years later promos were directed at a totally different audience.  However, the 1974 promos are appropriate for their time.  Heck, there was a show called How to Survive a Marriage, soaps were all about "contemporary drama" and navel-gazing seemed sophisticated.

I love that promo even though the horn is annoying. I wonder why they just listed those 3 soaps as a triple feature and excluded Y&R and Search For Tomorrow ?

The only 70's Y&R promos I have seen are: The 1973 debut with the voice over during the opening credits talking about an exciting new soap by William J. Bell the head writer for Days Of Our Lives and the 1979 promo of Nikki killing her father and Casey comforting her.

Is it just me, or does GL Peggy Fletcher look like Brett Butler of Grace Under Fire fame ?

Yeah, what IS with that horn?  What was it supposed to signify?  Because, it certainly would not compel me to think GL was a soap filled to bursting with dramatic tension and high stakes drama.

The editing makes you think OLTL's Brody is getting a b.j. in the shower.

The scene from The Doctors in that 1974 clip was romantic, the problem was without dialogue it made no sense. So unless you saw that day, you would be very confused.

I didn't mind the airhorn on the TGL ad. I think it was supposed to make people look away from what they were doing (they thought everyone was ironing I guess...) and look at the television, as since you couldn't hear any dialogue the only way you knew what was going on was watching the screen. (I'm only partly joking.)

1978 promo for the premiere of Dallas. It's pretty good, but the thing about "exposing the secrets that they had hoped to hide forever" was kind of odd. Little did CBS know that the 5 episodes that aired as a mid season replacement would turn into the blockbuster it would become by 1980.  I have still yet to see a 1979 promo for the debut of Knots Landing.

Does anyone remember CBS Daytime had a promo that used Patti Austin's The Heat of Heat song?

I think it ran in 1986, which I think was the same year they used the Robert Palmer Addicted to Love song.

Maybe each ran in different seasons?

Both promos had virtually the same theme of ocean waves lapping up on the beach then retreating, revealing the name of the soap written in the sand.

EDT:  I found one example.  I wish we could find the extended promos where he hear the actual song, no the reverb echo.

    • Thanks. I'm glad we have some fan memories of these years as this is such a typically snide take on the genre. It's also poorly written and reminds me a great deal of the tedious "snark" recaps that became popular in the '90s. The end in particular. The 1979/80 stuff I have seen is much more polished than a number of soaps at the time. It was very easy to watch and not too bogged down in past story.  Margo is played by Ann Williams, who was on what seemed like every soap. I think she said Margo was her favorite role.  These episodes aren't consecutive, but if you ever have time, they are worth a watch. They are bits and pieces from January and April of 1979 - April in and out of prison, her past calling to her via her psychic powers (and the suicide of Miles' wife Denise, who had murder framing in mind). April 1979 has the end of Winter Austen (such a fantastic soap name).  I don't want to drop a ton of links but you can find playlists on Youtube.
    • And the rating 'wars' continue...hehe.
    • Well, it was fun while it lasted for Rebecca Herbst. Le sigh.
    • I am wholeheartedly enjoying this show. I just haven't been able to post as much as I used to. But yes, this episode needs to be submitted for the EMMYs and there needs to be wins. I better NOT see Y&R, DAYS, or B&B winning in categories over BTG. I feel like the only show that is giving BTG an ounce of competition this season is GH.
    • I never thought the day would come, but too much MM for me.
    • I think it may be that the character was brought in for a specific purpose and then became popular with viewers, and the show didn't know how to respond.  The choice to pivot away from Simon/India may show that you are right and they didn't care for her...although pairing them up may be another sign they didn't care for her. I don't connect well with this period but it does make me happy seeing some of these characters before the great purge and some of the surprises - I'd forgotten the wonderful Maureen O'Sullivan popped up to be bumped off. So typical of soaps by this point, but it doesn't grate as much as later on when Y&R would bring on any random cast member from Small Wonder. I'm also amazed at this time at just how much money the show must have had. The costumes for the Founder's celebration in summer 1984, or whatever it was, looked gorgeous.
    • Which officially started to feel that way today with them hearing each other out as they confronted each other at the same time.    Same. He was even catching himself when he was about to go overboard or do those tics that people don't seem to like. He failed a bit at the end, but he carried. It makes me think about a month back when it was discussed that the actor was better in other things he's been in. And I questioned then if that meant that he was playing Martin more intentionally. I questioned that briefly again today because he was giving.
    • I really like the actress who plays Margo. Don't know  her name. I'm so hesitant to google anyone because I don't want to know the length they were on the show. I've watched two episodes and I have to say that the show does not feel as dated as other shows. I tried to watch Ryan's Hope a few weeks back and some of the acting was a bit rough. EON is a lot more natural which amuses me considering it's a mystery/thriller show.
