Offbeat Soap Facts/News bits/Anecdotes you still remember

  • Members

A recent comment I saw about Carolyn Hinsey's epic 2008 firing from SOW had me thinking. In all the years in reading the soap press are there any particular offbeat or peculiar moments that still stick out to any of you to this day here in 2018? I certainly recall a strange few for starters:

--In 1989, it was rumored the usually mild-mannered and generally admired longtime P&G veteran producer Joe Willmore, who was EP at GL was constantly losing his temperament and was very controlling; the cast and crew didn't shed any tears when Calhoun came in to replace and Willmore left P&G without fanfare.

--A January 1992 issue of Soap Opera Update predicted that Brian, Ginger, Molly and Tanner on Days would be the real stars of the show with Molly & Tanner destined to become Days' IT/hottest supercouple of the year. In reality, all four characters caused the show to tank badly.

--Circa summer 1996, Victoria Wyndham went to a Rhode Island ice shop and apparently was quite rude to the store owner and their mother. The alleged incident seemed to haunt Wyndham for several years on the net following it first surfacing.

--In the summer of 1998, an OLTL fan mailed a bizarre letter to SOD's fan mail section stating they had enjoyed Maggie Andersson as Jessica for years and stated they did not like the new recast and wanted to know the name of the new Jessica actress. SOD had to awkwardly correct the OLTL fan stating that Andersson had just been a temporary recast and that Erin Torpey was the original actress. @SFK

--Ken Corday declaring war on SOW after they named the Gina story on Days the Worst Story of 1999; he boycotted giving any interviews with the rag for a good year.

--Any of the strange interviews that JER and Brad Bell did with Michael Logan in the spring of 2004 regarding their plans for the respective shows Days and B&B. Let's just be thankful none of it came to pass.

Was there ever a thing about that book with nudes of Frank Grillo and Josh Duhamel?

I seem to recall Grillo really didn’t want the photos out there.

I remember he copped to it in one of the rags (SOWeekly, etc) and seemed very nonchalant about admitting they were him during his modeling days.

I had heard that Oakdale was stationed closer to Peoria in Illinois.

And to further confuse the issue, I just watched a 1980 episode of The Edge of Night that cited Oakdale as a suburb of Monticello!

I saw a thing recently where John Stamos was asked about who was the biggest prick he had ever worked with and he said Rick Springfield on GH. He said "He wasn't the nicest to me"......LOL

Wow. That really surprises me.  Not that it should.  Nothing should surprise when it comes to celebrities at this point, but I had always pegged RS for a nice guy.  Maybe because he always gives his all when he sings "Jessie's Girl". In his place I'd be rolling my eyes and needing a few drinks to get through it after all of these years.  I took it to mean he wasn't a diva.

Given that John Stamos seems to be a bit smarmy and unpleasant himself I'm not sure if I'd want to be around either of them.

Good point. These things are never really clear, especially when you go that far into the past.

I know what you mean. He had several good songs, but most people only remember or want to hear Jessie's Girl repeatedly. There are two sides to every story, but I had never really heard anything bad about RS. Maybe JS was the jerk in the situation. Like the Kate Jackson/Cheryl Ladd friction on Charlie's Angels.

Most of the cast of FH come off smarmy. This latest scandal with Lori Loughlin is like a train wreck.

Right after joining AW in 1997, Lisa Peluso gave an interview to SOM where she gave an anecdote from her days as a child actress. 20 years prior, she had completed a small role as John Travolta's little sister in Saturday Night Fever and went right into what would be a long run on SFT as Wendy.

She and her new TV mom, Maree Cheatham, decided to go to a matinee showing of SNF one day. Apparently, it was more than what they bargained for. This was going to be Lisa's first time seeing the completed film. Neither realized the extent of the violence and vulgar language that was/is as prominent as the dancing and Bee Gees music. Maree kept her hands over 13-year-old Lisa's ears for almost the entire movie!! Maree confirmed Lisa's story years later on social media.

Even though Lisa's part in the movie was pretty small (the only scene I remember her being in was the infamous family dinner, but it's been years since I've seen it), she still participates in SNF-related events. The most recent event was last month at the Chiller Con Expo in NJ, where she was reunited with several other cast members (including famous soap faces Karen Gorney and Donna Pescow).
