Soap Opera Pet Peeves

This was inspired by the "Most Ridiculous" thread, and my generally annoying nit picking, but I was curious which things consistently annoy you on soaps.

I find it annoying that no matter how  rich the character is, literally anyone can just come to their door, or break in their house. It's especially eye roll worthy in cases where the show has referenced the estate having a gate numerous times. I found it stupid how OLTL's Mitch could pop on Viki's property all the time. Same with AMC's Chandler mansion and Y&R's Chancellor mansion. It's the same on all soaps. I doubt it's that easy to walk on the property of real life billionaires, much less get past the front door.

Multi national corporations being run with a staff of 3 from one office in a small town.

Millionaires/billionaires who never travel. No summer vacations spent at the villa in the South of France.A tiny cabin out of town is the closest they get.

Criminals walking free and being forgiven or serving a short jail term.

Anyone who is admitted to hospital always has a private room.

A pet peeve of mine on soaps is watching these people eat out constantly. Ain't no reason for Jack or Victor to be eating at the GCAC when they most likely have a top of the line chef at home, who's food would rival what's served at the GCAC.

When soap characters that are DAs are allowed to work on cases with folks they have personal relationships with. At times I can overlook it but come on. They'd be recused in real life.

But so many have.  After she learned her lesson with Laura, I can't think of another rape storyline Monty told on GH, and for the 1980s that show didn't continually tell that story.  I don't remember Felicia, Anna, Lucy or really anyone being raped when other soaps were having nearly all the women raped, and more often than not, their rapist staying on the show.

Santa Barbara and DAYS come to mind immediately.

Mine is that so few characters work anymore or have storylines involving their jobs at all.

I want to see doctors and nurses at GH, teens working at Kelly's, people at ELQ, etc.

I suppose that most people here would consider it nit-picky on my part, but my peeve is about soap funerals.   I recall seeing footage from an old ATWT episode, a show I never watched regularly.  There was a funeral for a major character who had died, and the other characters, his family and friends, were gathered in their Sunday best at some sort of funeral setting, a funeral home, I think.   There was a service with an actual Bible reading and a minister, and alot of domestic chatter between the characters.  It was like a funeral in real life.  Nowadays, the soaps will downplay that realistic element and allow each character to go up to the lectern and go into hysterics in front of the guests, and of course, that venue will be the place to spill some sort of major secret.  I understand that soaps have a set of conventions all their own and this way is the way to go for dramatic purposes, but it sort of bothers me because in my mind, a character that I loved that passed on didn't have a respectful and dignified send-off.  That was one reason why I was glad that GH didn't do a grandstand type of funeral when the character of Edward Quartermaine passed away.  I think it was more respectful to the actor's memory who had played Edward, too.

I would consider that rape.  Did she ever have sex with Stefano while she was Gina?

Also Kayla, Jennifer, Sami and Adrienne, and Kim remembering she had been molested in a 10 year span of stories.  And I may have missed one.  And two of those rapists were allowed to stay on the show and became romantic leads, in Jack and Lawrence.

This became so ridiculous on Dynasty - characters could just waltz in whereever they wanted, whenever they wanted. It became especially ridiculous with Alexis' penthouse as you'd assume that there'd be a doorman and restriced access. It wasn't like they could just climb into a window...

    • 5-21   Have I said how much I like Jacob and Naomi? As the first in-bed couple from Episode 1...and a good guy/good girl couple, I do love seeing their development. Together. And separate. So doing my rewatch, it's great to see them together one moment and making their lives work. And then the next minute, they are off in other stories. I liked the Naomi/Derek scenes. Meanwhile DETECTIVE Jacob is involved in the SilkPress storyline due to Veronica Mars aka Kat on her and Eva's case.    Dani, Dani, Dani. I thought it was a good episode to show her different sides. The outrageous Dani who would kiss her friend in public...and figuratively blow Bill's head off. And then...there's Mama Dani with Chelesa. She is always going to be divisive, ain't she? Sidenote...good to see a bit of sass from Pamela on Vanessa. It's clear they don't like each other. I do wonder if that will turn into a C plot.    Speaking of C plots...well...I still can't believe how invested I have been in the Derek/Ashley mess. And another element in it that I liked this episode was how it was affecting Dani/Andre. Heck, they were all in the montage at the end.   And another speaking of C plots, Bill and that hand. smh. I didn't care for all the Bill/Hayley time, but that hand shake continued. I do wonder where that is going to go. MS perhaps? I believe in rare cases that it can happen to men, but I am probably wrong. Still...a chance to educate.    I loved the Dani/Chelesa scene for sure. I'm sorry that things did not work out for Chels and the girl. But it was nice to see that in the spotlight and something just different for soaps. And it led to such a great talk with Dani.    Mmmmm at the SilkPress/Eva scenes. It was such a visual version of what Eva and Tomas just talked about in the last episode with parents. And SilkPress admitting what she did. I totally missed it the first time around. I live for their scenes regardless. Though I'm starting to think (and the synopsis for this coming week doesn't help), that this A story is about to shift into more of a B story status to focus on the other A stories (Martin's secret and another round of Dani/Bill/Hayley).

It really is too bad that Will/Sonny/Paul/ Andrew aren’t full time. John’s death could’ve led to so many storylines for them.

    • I had to think about how Tate is related to everyone. First:  major storylines of John and Bo. Tate is obviously grandson of John via Brady Black. Tate is twice-connected to Bo: Bo is Tate's great-uncle via Isabella. Bo is Tate's great-uncle via Kimberly. Tate is separately related to Pandrew: Andrew is Tate's uncle on the Donovan-Brady side. Paul is Tate's uncle on the Black side. Connections to young people in town: Via Kimberly and Roman, Tate is related to Johnny and Will. Will is Ari's father, so Tate is related to Arianna via Will. Via Isabella and Justin, Tate is related to Sonny. Sonny is Ari's third parent, so Tate is connected to Ari via Sonny. I started to diagram out second cousins, third cousins, half-cousins, half-uncles, "once-removed", etc, and then stopped myself, LOL. What matters is that they are extended family to one another.
    • Oh, I See it now! Thanks
    • And proved what a well-placed line of dialog can cover.  Has there been any mention of Claire?
    • Johnny said today that Sami and Sydney were trying to fly in from Sicily, but were stopped by a volcanic eruption because the ash had grounded all the planes.
    • I just finished with today & it was definitely odd. I can understand that they've got to fill in extended family. There was just so much of it. Without even one scene of Marlena. That, to me, was problematic. However, I'm not going to jump to any conclusions. We'll see what tomorrow brings.
    • Why is Sonny not part of this return as well?
