Dallas: Discussion Thread

If they put Falcon Crest on FreeVee then I don't see why Knots isn't next; I imagine that the thing that might be holding it up is the entire issue with songs and how they'll deal with that (either cut out, replace or pay license fee; the latter could get more expensive than they like).

Years ago David Jacob’s debunked the music rights rumor. I tend to believe him because they didn’t use music that much. You have the Lisa Hartman tracks and a couple 60s pop songs later on but that’s it. That would be easier to clear than a 90210 with endless pop songs in each episode.

It has been reported that Knots and  FC had poor dvd sales.

A DVD on demand season 3 was released for FC. Sales for that season were said to have been good. They even said a season 4 release was going to happen but it never did.

Yes.  My recollection is they scripted a lot of different false scenarios, filmed a few of them, and staged photos of others.  Some tabloid (National Enquirer?) was digging through the trash outside Lorimar studios for scraps of scripts, planting "spies" inside the studio and so forth, in order to get the "scoop" on Patrick Duffy's return.  Anticipating this, Katzman (or whoever was producer at the time) threw the tabloids off-track by leading them to believe Duffy would be playing an imposter, a never-before-heard-of brother, and a mangled Bobby who'd been in a coma.  These were all red herrings to feed the media, though, because they'd always intended to bring him back as Plain Ole Bobby, as that's the only way long-time fans would've been satisfied.

When you consider where they left off, I don’t understand why they didn’t just say Bobby was revived and Angelica Nero always had him hidden away as a last resort sort of thing in case her deal with JR failed. It would be forgotten in a few episodes and they wouldn’t have to reset all of their stories a year back. I can’t believe they actually went through with that.

In the beginning...ratings of the first 5 episodes.

Debuting late (April) in the 77/78 season Sundays @10.

1.Digger's Daughter 21.5/37 #18 of 65

2. The Lesson 15.2/26 # 50 of 69

3. Spy in the House 15.8/26 #40 of 65

4. Winds of Vengeance 21.1/35 # 12 of 68

5. Barbecue 21.8/39 #11 of 65

The lead in was strong-All in the Family/Alice and the competition was the last hour of movies on ABC and NBC.

That dip for episodes 2 and 3 was due to strong competition from NBC with the movie 'Family upside Down' and 'Holocaust Pt 1 'dominating the 9-11 timeslot.

Dallas finished #44 for the season. CBS saw that the show had promise and scheduled it for Sat @10 next season. They decided to go with a new drama 'Kaz' Sun @10.

That...might have worked.  IIRC, there was a moment when the family was gathered around Bobby at the hospital.  Bobby was struggling to talk to them; then, suddenly, he flatlined.  They could have said that, in fact, Bobby came back, but remained in a coma for some time; and that everything we saw after he flatlined was all part of his coma-induced dreams.

    • No. Ruth had an extramarital affair with David while married to Joe.
    • I'm not sure I agree with Bernstein's children on that. Bernstein's life and activism here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonard_Bernstein#Social_activism_and_humanitarian_efforts
    • Thursday & Friday's episodes were excellent. The build-up was most definitely worth the wait (2 months). TMG, I can't give her enough accolades. AM, was also absolutely incredible. I think the fallout is going to have a ripple effect. The little clues that have been dropped,  hopefully, will weave seamlessly to reveal even bigger bombshells for the Dupree's and Martin.
    • Thanks, msn drives me nuts on the one hand but on the other hand their headlines appeal to me. And, I just don't do FoxNews.
    • The link doesn't work.  The actual link is this: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/composer-leonard-bernstein-s-children-request-his-music-be-played-in-the-kennedy-center-in-rebuke-to-trump/ar-AA1E7gw5 That's a reprint of a FoxNews article. MSN reprints stuff from many sources. You can tell the source from the logo above the headline on the msn page. The FoxNews article is describing what Leonard Bernstein's children wrote -- as a "letter to the editor" of the New York Times. Instead of reading it filtered through FoxNews, here is the original: "Our Dad, Leonard Bernstein, Would Want His Music Played at the Kennedy Center" https://www.nytimes.com/2025/05/02/opinion/kennedy-center-leonard-bernstein-protest.html Non-paywall archived copy of the same NYTimes letter, without commentary: https://archive.is/QaLqD
    • Might be a long shot, because I can't find a thing online about it, but I was Googling the actress that played Nell Cleary (Frank's cop friend that went through academy and then became cops together during the entire Brent Lawrence storyline). To my surprise, she passed away in 2011, at the very young age of 45. I can't find her obituary or anything online about her passing, but I'm curious, does anyone know what happened? Her IMDB only shows a few other acting gigs post-Guiding Light, so she didn't make a career out of it, but I thought she was a great actress in her role as Cleary. Her name was Mary Peterson.
    • What was Ruth Martin's association to the Thornton family?  I only remember the daughter that dated Tad, and she had a buxom mother.  But, did Ruth date David Thorton before Joe?

Why didn't Steve respect Monica and Jeff's decision?  I get he's Jeff's father, and that's how it came out, but I don't like the ethics of the story. A stranger gets to make life or death decisions over a wife's demands?   I hope Monica secretly never forgave Steve's chauvinism.
    • Question: Jon-Michael Reed's review of 1977 is up in the retro soap section.  It includes a fleeting reference to comedic scenes between Jeanne Cooper and Julianna McCarthy regarding “Kay's would-be beau, Ralph the Plumber”.  Could someone please fill me in will more details? I forgot that Kay and Liz were friendly before Jill stole Kay's husband.  And the thought of Liz playing a comedic scene blows my mind, because I only recall her being dour both in demeanor and wardrobe.
    • I said this on Twitter on Friday when Leslie mentioned Chicago, so perhaps she might be related to one of Anita's bandmates. In addition, Leslie did say she grew up listening to The Articulettes too.
