What character was a favorite of yours until the actor playing the role ruined it for you?

I think your statement sums this thread up perfectly! A lot of the bad recasts did 'kill' certain characters literally (think AW - recasting Sally with Nina Courtland! I won't name the actress because I adored her and she was very honest about it being a bad fit) or it sent them off the canvas quickly.

On the other hand, who would've ever thought that the actress who played frumpy Shelly/Kelly as the unbelievable 'hooker with a heart of gold' on Capitol would turn out to one of the most amazing recasts of a major role of all time and is still as fierce as nearly 30 years later - Jess Walton.

I thought about Mac but decided, especially the first recast, didn't ruin the character for me. While it pretty much ended Mac and Mac & Billy, she was just there, inconsequential, like an annoying little fly. It wasn't a situation like the GODAWFULJESUSCHRISTMYEYES Shittuck Ashley or Heinle Victoria. I didn't actively hate her. I didn't want to scratch my eyes out.

I just didn't see Mac anymore.

Would have been another dreadful miscasting. For the life of me I will never understand those who claim "but she was good elsewhere!"

Are we not going to discuss Brenda Dickson 2.0?  She eventually almost crippled Jill.

Susan Walters was a good recast.

Like Brenda Epperson's Ashley her Diane was a lot softer but still a totally welcome addition to the cast. Unfortunately Y&R has a terrible habit of ditching its past & throwing characters (especially female characters) under the bus to prop terrible new couples.

Yes, Susan Walters was excellent as Diane. Perhaps I skipped it, but Darius McCrary as, and I'm trying to hold my extreme laughter, Malcolm??? I put that on par with the Susan Batten as Connor (ATWT). On top of the fact that he was a terrible person, especially his with 'oreo' comment in front of VR/KSJ during that radio interview. I had to FF through every one of his scenes. Thank goodness that SM is all class and returned to the role for a few days in 2014, so 'Malcolm' is restored, even if off-canvas. Though now that he's off CM, I'd love another return

I wonder why Y&R couldn't get Susan Walters back? She was a good foil to Jack and Phyllis. I wouldn't want her to return only to be manhandled and killed though.

When Darius McCrary was on Y&R, I was taking one of my "breaks" from the show but I was curious so I did watch some episodes when they used to be posted on You Tube before they got taken down. That was just an awkward recast and it didn't help that the show looked a mess at that time too.

I was busy during the Susan Batten season, so lucky me! I did see a couple episodes on You Tube and I could barely get through them.

Susan's Diane was a lot of fun but she suffered the same treatment as Alex's Original Diane and Don Diamont's Brad. The combo of Jack Smith & LML really screwed them over.

Susan was open to returning but Y&R was determined to cast Maura solely because they wanted to de-age Diane for both Victor & Nick.

Darius McCrary is not a bad actor but he was completely wrong for Malcolm. And the reasons the show gave for choosing him specifically as the recast were offensive.

I just really enjoyed Alex in the role more.  Much more.  She had more of an edge and a stronger, tougher presence.  Walters was absolutely fine.  Just not as interesting for me.  I love Maura but not as Diane.

On Guiding Light, I only know Beverlee's Alex and Sherry's Blake from the amazing stuff people put on YouTube.  Even though I watched for awhile with their replacements as the show was airing I just didn't get why people thought those characters were so important.  When you see them in the roles, it's so clear how vital they were.

    • 5-21   Have I said how much I like Jacob and Naomi? As the first in-bed couple from Episode 1...and a good guy/good girl couple, I do love seeing their development. Together. And separate. So doing my rewatch, it's great to see them together one moment and making their lives work. And then the next minute, they are off in other stories. I liked the Naomi/Derek scenes. Meanwhile DETECTIVE Jacob is involved in the SilkPress storyline due to Veronica Mars aka Kat on her and Eva's case.    Dani, Dani, Dani. I thought it was a good episode to show her different sides. The outrageous Dani who would kiss her friend in public...and figuratively blow Bill's head off. And then...there's Mama Dani with Chelesa. She is always going to be divisive, ain't she? Sidenote...good to see a bit of sass from Pamela on Vanessa. It's clear they don't like each other. I do wonder if that will turn into a C plot.    Speaking of C plots...well...I still can't believe how invested I have been in the Derek/Ashley mess. And another element in it that I liked this episode was how it was affecting Dani/Andre. Heck, they were all in the montage at the end.   And another speaking of C plots, Bill and that hand. smh. I didn't care for all the Bill/Hayley time, but that hand shake continued. I do wonder where that is going to go. MS perhaps? I believe in rare cases that it can happen to men, but I am probably wrong. Still...a chance to educate.    I loved the Dani/Chelesa scene for sure. I'm sorry that things did not work out for Chels and the girl. But it was nice to see that in the spotlight and something just different for soaps. And it led to such a great talk with Dani.    Mmmmm at the SilkPress/Eva scenes. It was such a visual version of what Eva and Tomas just talked about in the last episode with parents. And SilkPress admitting what she did. I totally missed it the first time around. I live for their scenes regardless. Though I'm starting to think (and the synopsis for this coming week doesn't help), that this A story is about to shift into more of a B story status to focus on the other A stories (Martin's secret and another round of Dani/Bill/Hayley).

It really is too bad that Will/Sonny/Paul/ Andrew aren’t full time. John’s death could’ve led to so many storylines for them.

    • I had to think about how Tate is related to everyone. First:  major storylines of John and Bo. Tate is obviously grandson of John via Brady Black. Tate is twice-connected to Bo: Bo is Tate's great-uncle via Isabella. Bo is Tate's great-uncle via Kimberly. Tate is separately related to Pandrew: Andrew is Tate's uncle on the Donovan-Brady side. Paul is Tate's uncle on the Black side. Connections to young people in town: Via Kimberly and Roman, Tate is related to Johnny and Will. Will is Ari's father, so Tate is related to Arianna via Will. Via Isabella and Justin, Tate is related to Sonny. Sonny is Ari's third parent, so Tate is connected to Ari via Sonny. I started to diagram out second cousins, third cousins, half-cousins, half-uncles, "once-removed", etc, and then stopped myself, LOL. What matters is that they are extended family to one another.
    • Oh, I See it now! Thanks
    • And proved what a well-placed line of dialog can cover.  Has there been any mention of Claire?
    • Johnny said today that Sami and Sydney were trying to fly in from Sicily, but were stopped by a volcanic eruption because the ash had grounded all the planes.
    • I just finished with today & it was definitely odd. I can understand that they've got to fill in extended family. There was just so much of it. Without even one scene of Marlena. That, to me, was problematic. However, I'm not going to jump to any conclusions. We'll see what tomorrow brings.
    • Why is Sonny not part of this return as well?
