It seems fairly obvious that this isn't the case and Helena has brainwashed him just like she did Jason. Nik wasn't acting the way she wanted so she took action to mold him into the prince she expects him to be. I could be wrong, but I'm almost certain he didn't just decide out of the blue to be bad bc he's unlucky at love.
