The antithesis to this question and answer is Jack Deveraux. Ever since he was brought back in 2001 the writers refused to give him any significant story. He had a PTSD story that got Matt Ashford nominated for an emmy, but the show wouldn't run with it. And that is just the most recent example.

In 2006 when Missy Reeves quit the show, they fired Ashford too. That was a great chance to let Matt shine on his own--he was a big star on the show before J&J--and to give Jack exciting new stories. But the show couldn't imagine Jack without Jennifer (although they could always imagine Jennifer without Jack). They even fired him just as Steve and Kayla were coming back, the ultimate opportunity for a Jack story that the fans had been clamoring for for years. The S&K story bombed without him there.

The story that fans most wanted, Abby learning about the rape of Kayla, was done with JJ and without Jack there to boot--the final, ultimate slap to MA/Jack and his fans.

And if Days wants to do a brainwashing story--as we all know they love to do--how about Victor kidnapping Jack, wiping out his recent memories, and turning Jack back into a villain. He could totally drive the show for years as the lead villain on the canvas--he's done it before.

There is so much more that could be written for him it is remarkable.

I actually think that soaps have become way too cavalier about killing characters off. There are so many ways for characters to exit but soaps have fallen into the trap of killing characters for shock value the resurrecting them for more shock value a few years later. I keep thinking about how OLTL managed to wipe out a huge chunk of its younger set (Al, Drew, Jen, Duke, Keri, etc...) over over a couple of years and by doing so they destroyed a generation's worth of story potential. Then these shows turn around and bring on new characters with no real ties to fill the holes left and THEN then retcon these characters back onto the existing families. (I'm looking at your bony ass Greenlee Smythe Montgomery Lavery.) It's useless character churn.

I honestly don't think the majority of viewers *want* to see Matt Ashford's Jack in a non-Jenn story. He's not that interesting without his supercouple anchor.

It's no surprise that Melissa Reeves has been able to go on without him 3 separate times (Peter Blake, Frankie Brady, now Daniel). Whether they have all been successful pairings is arguable (her and Jason Brooks sizzled onscreen. Frankie? Daniel? Eh...). And her real-life choice in fast food joints did her no favors in popularity...

Jack was interesting before jack and Jenn. Can't really say the same for Jenn between frankie go round one and jack. Emilio blech. But Jack was interesting back in the 80s before he became mostly comic relief. They never really tried jack and anyone else.

Jenn just stays because shes a Horton. But Jenn and Frankie the second time around and Daniel now, it is not arguable. They sucked.

Jack was a major character on the show before his pairing with Jennifer. And in their heyday the story revolved around Jack, not Jennifer, or even the two characters equally. In 1991 Matthew Ashford was repeatedly ranked as the most popular actor on daytime. (I can't remember the name of the now-defunct magazine. I think it might have been Soap Opera Update).

In recent years, the show never gave Jack a chance without her, like they did for her without him. That isn't based on polling or audience response. It is based on the show's writers' unilateral decisions. They couldn't imagine MA/Jack as a big star in his own right, even though he once was.
