Unpopular Opinions: 2012 Edition

The writing is a big part of it. The moment the character spawned Michael and used her meal ticket to emotionally ensnare a bunch of wealthy and/or dangerous men (Jason, Sonny, Jax) was the moment everything went to hell in a handbasket for GH. I just can't anymore. I just can't take this spiteful, nasty, bullying, selfish troll of a "mother" as the one-and-only heroine of the show. She's not fun in a vixenish way. She is awful. It really says something when Guza/JFP/Frons/Garin's disdain of women in general permeates every aspect of the show -- but they can't shut up about how much they love this "strong" female character who makes it her life's business to bully other women. What?!

Something else, though. About a month into Laura Wright airing as NuNuNuCarly, she went on SoapTalk and proceeded to brag about how she was made for this role, how she was KICKING ASS in this role, how she was a TAKE NO PRISONERS kind of actress, thanks to learning her acting chops from Kim Zimmer ( rolleyes.gif ), bragging about how ABC had her in place for over 6-12 months prior to Jennifer Bransford getting fired, etc. Smug smug smug. It really turned me off. Seems like she brought this kind of dynamic to the character of Carly, too.

I consider Carly and the writing to be one in the same, since the writers created that soul-sucking chupacabra. Otherwise, you're completely on the ball when it comes to assessing where it all went wrong.

I admit that I am a bit biased (blame it on my love for her Cassie Layne Winslow, of which I'm still salty about her not being there when Jammy was found out), but I don't see the problem with her tooting her own horn about her acquiring the role (though I stop short of high-fiving her for talking about the other actress before her, as that reeks a bit of The Real Greenlee-ism). And she's right about being made for the role because she is portraying Carly as she's always been - a vile slagbeast who turns everything and everyone to sh*t - which is why I never understood the argument that she (or any actress that came before her) "ruined" the character (another unpopular opinion of mine).

I think this is OK if they eventually mature these relationships - if it's just done for some kind of a lifevest-style clinging to history, where she screeches and weeps on Marlena and Will screeches and weeps at her, then it's a waste of time.

It will be interesting to see where they take Will once he does come out, especially since Massey's performance seems very asexual to me. I have heard comments again about how Sonny just doesn't have the "fire" Will needs - unless that means someone needs to tell Will to go sit in the corner, I'm not sure what "fire" Will needs. I hope they take some time to actually give Sonny a life of his own. Sonny existing solely for Will is the same type of bad writing that sunk Luke and Noah on ATWT.

Chandler Massey is asexual but name me a gay character on network TV that isn't. Kalinda on The Good Wife is but she's actually bisexual. Kish and Otalia had some sex appeal that was down played. American TV is afraid of portraying gays as fully sexualized people. You need to tune into cable and even thats rare.

Cable TV is about the same - mostly just trash like the parade of ugly stereotypes on FX. I guess there's the cop on Southland.

I don't disagree with you about gays on TV, I just think there is more focus on Will at the moment, like that "hot" kiss, where he looked angry and tortured and miserable. I think they would have been better off just avoiding his love life altogether, because it's never going to be what people want it to be. The character is there to throw tantrums, not be romantic. And the crying and yelling and breathy Hogestyn style stuff seems to be what Massey leans on anyway.

MAB's crusade to rid Y&R of anyone hired under LML's regime was just petty. Irizarry, Podell, Frantz and Warlock needed to go, and I give her props for trying to get rid of Goddard (albeit after completely trashing his character), but Peeples, Sursok, O'Brien (as sane Jana) and Bloom's firings were throwing the baby out with the bath water.

And killing Zapato... Bitch, please.

And yet, LML's lackey Scott Hamner is still stinking up the place.

Question for you GHers: Is Laura Wright really terrible, or is she poorly miscast? I *loved* her as GL's Cassie smile.png

She was often green on Loving/The City, but I admit I was a fan of her there. The little I've seen of her on GH, while by no means phenomenal acting wise, I really do think the main fault is how horridly the character has been written.

For a long time, I preferred Tamara Braun as Carly on GH over Sarah Brown. Sacrilege, I know. Then Sarah Brown came back as Claudia and I was like "You go, bitch!" I loved her and wanted her to get her revenge on Sonny, her father, everybody. I could have watched Brown and Brandon Barash in scenes forever.

Also -- and apologies to Ms. Chandler Quartermaine -- I never got the big whoop about Robin Christopher. I never saw her on AMC, though I understand she was amazing. On AW, she replaced the fierce and fabulous Alicia Coppola as Lorna -- insanely difficult shows to fill. On GH, I always felt she stood out and that they were constantly trying to shoehorn her character into different SLs/pairings. They really should have put her with Sonny but since RC and MB once dated on AMC and it may have ended badly, I don't think either were willing to be paired up.

She should definitely be recast, but not with Davetta. She was a slight step up from Khalil but still far from good.

That's what I don't get about all the Davetta love, really. She might've been more street than CK, but just because she's more street doesn't mean she's an outstanding actress. "Better than Christel" is still not good enough, IMO.

I get an obscene amount of pleasure from seeing certain former soap actors make good in primetime, cable and film. Especially when those actors and the characters they played were considered "unimportant" or "disposable" while other, lesser actors who played "core" or "legacy" characters were treated like the best thing to ever happen to their individual shows.

For example, I love seeing that Michael B. Jordan (Reggie, AMC), Amanda Seyfried (Joni, AMC), Renee Elise Goldsberry (Evangeline, OLTL), Kelli Giddish (Di, AMC), Tika Sumpter (Layla, OLTL) and JR Martinez (Brot, AMC) have been working like motherfuckers while some of their former co-stars couldn't get a job selling coke to porn stars.

I liked that Skye was never was into Sonny. He's not that hot and most of his major love interests have ended up damaged by being with him.

But we don't know how good she could have gotten since they fire her the way they did. Look how long they gave CK & she still shitty. DS gave us more of what Dru daughter, somebody that was raise by Dru should be like. When Dru explain why Lily had to come back. She said because she was hanging around the wrong group of people & she couldn't handle her. Dru handle CKLily just fine. I just can't see them writing for DSLily who present herself more as mini Dru the same way they write for CKLily who present herself as something else.

Luke/Reid were fairly hot and even Luke/Noah had some sexy moments pre and post kissing ban. But the fact that Luke/Reid never consummated their relationship did undermine their sex appeal.

But we don't know how good she could have gotten since they fire her the way they did.

The way I saw it, she got progressively worse from the beginning to the end of her stint. In her final weeks she looked bored and clearly didn't want to be there.
