The first death you saw on a soap

You did. Helga Voynitzeva died two years before Mona Kane Tyler. I was in junior high when Helga took her tumble, and Mona's funeral was the summer before my sophomore year. The memory markers we have. I remember because that was the same year my parents finally allowed me to wear black clothing, ironically, the summer Mona died. Long story, but my father wouldn't allow me to wear black clothing as a child. He said it was too severe a color to wear.

I think it was when James Stenbeck fell out of a plane while fighting John Dixon on ATWT. Little did I know that I would get to see him die repeatedly as the years went on.

Of course, on Dark Shadows somebody died every other episode, but usually came back as a vampire or werewolf.

My sweet Jenny from AMC.

I thought she died for reals that day in the hospital with Greg.

I wasn't old enough yet to know the difference that AMC wasn't about real people.

My mom had to leave work to come and get me from the babysitter.

Oh the tears...and the yelling...that was going on that afternoon from me.

I was not pleased with her dying!

LoL

For me it was Nadine on GL. Considering she ate so much of the show and Brent/Marian was the first big story I was really invested in, it was weird not seeing her afterwards. Then Reva's undeadness sort of made soap deaths mean nothing to me, and...I've been drinking and have no idea where I was going with this. ONWARD!

Because I was only 5, I have very vague memories of Adam getting killed on Edge Of Night in 77, and Raven's husband Kevin dying in 78. The first soap death I can fully remember like it happened yesterday was Guiding Light's Roger falling off the cliff in 1980. I was so terrified that my knees shook because I thought Ed would save him, then he would kill Ed, Mike & Holly. Man was I relieved when Ed lost his grip, but I was just as excited 8 years later when we learned he survived!

    • Very disappointed in the writers in the way they are screwing with Nicole, Ted,  and Kat to make Leslie remain viable. So many holes everywhere.
    • Somebody brought this up elsewhere which emphasizes why this NuTed appears as such a weakling? Why is Kat doing what HE should be doing? And that's everything he can to rid him and his family of this crazy woman. Kat is doing all kinds of things she shouldn't do but now I understand her more. She can't count on her father to eliminate this woman because he's a wimp. He's been too busy inviting her into his home and serving her drinks and offering her invitations to birthday parties. WIMP!!!!

    • This is (maybe) overly simplistic and nonsoapy, but Doug needs to go to Gamblers Anonymous, to deal with the addictive neurological excitement hits that gambling gives him - and which control his life. Vanessa needs to go to therapy to find ways to remain healthfully lusty and sex-positive, but to stay away from anyone who would demean her.
    • YT keeps commending GL clips to me. I discovered Kathleen Cullen was on in Christmas 1987. Was there any talk of making it permanent  or was this just a special visit? I wish they had made the visit permanent. I liked her chemistry with Grant Aleksander.
    • I'm not sure it's as unpopular as you think.  I just think the show knew they were in a bind, and needed a proven couple for the viewers to invest in. Trying to reunite Vanessa and Ross had just failed in 87. I don't think Ed and Holly's affair was well received, as Simon and Garrett had a brother/sister chemistry. Enter Billy and Vanessa, who give you history and an out not to try and do a Josh/Reva/Billy triangle, which would've really wrecked the relationship between Josh and Billy. I'd have been ok with trying Vanessa/Ross again, and doing a Vanessa/Ross/Holly/Billy quad for a while. I hated Nadine. HATED. She had to be the most insufferable also-ran before ATWT's Julia Lindsay. This is where I wish I knew Roger's history better.

    • GROSS. Michael Swan was hot back in his ATWT days. Now he's 76 and WAY past his hot years.
    • Since she kidnapped, locked up and tried to kill her father's wife I'd say that is still a pretty big deal
    • I'm good with the gushing, too. There aren't many soap icons like John Black, and that's important to celebrate and remember. And yes, life does go on for other characters, but as they say, timing is everything. Going sky diving the day before the funeral? And during a week of shows that were so powerful emotionally? No.
