Characters That Took Over Your Show

On prime time TV, we've seen characters take over a show and change the whole dynamic of the series. Fonzie took over Happy Days, Urkel took over Family Matters, Jimmie Walker became the main attraction on Good Times. On soaps, the same thing happens all the time. New head writers come in and decide that Character X needs to be the focus of the show, while Character Y moves to the back burner. Sometimes it works, sometimes it's a disaster. Way back in the day, Dark Shadows was on the verge of being cancelled, until a new character (Barnabas Collins) appeared and made the show a phenomenon.

On ATWT (my favorite soap) I've seen it happen with mixed results. The characters of Lily, Jennifer and Gwen were thrust center-stage. (I remember people calling it "As Jennifer's World Turns" at one point.). But the most obvious example was the takeover of the show during the final two years of Janet Ciccone and her Clan.

What characters took over your show during certain periods? And did it help or hurt the show, in your opinion?

Ugh...*slams head against wall* FREAKIN' Janet Ciccone! Talk about something that will live in infamy...Goutman should hereeverafter be plagued with hemorrhoids for foisting that useless, stereotypical "Italian Earth Mother and Feeder of all Sufferers" on us in ATWT's final days.

Personally, I didn't see Jennifer as an air-hog, but Gwen definitely was. Not that Jen Landon wasn't talented, but after the first year, the only story she really had was an endless "I wanna baby" go-round.

The quintessential Character Who Ate The Show---Hunt Block's Craig. The minute he started, he was thrown into every story on the canvas, and really didn't stop complete domination for THREE friggin' years. The last two years, his story dwindled significantly, but Craig was still inserted into stories he didn't belong in.

It ALWAYS hurts a show. Even if the actor/actress is mega-talented, viewers get burned out.

I love Kendall but no character should appear as much as she did at one time. Didn't she broke a record one year for number of appearances in a year?

Babe is a good example of an obnoxious character taking over a show. I hated how McTavish kept getting characters like Zarf to go on about her supposed virtues.

Ryan and Greenlee are another negative example. I wouldn't be surprised if they hastened the death of AMC.

The question in the past was is this person really in all the stories or is it just I hate them so I can't forget about them?

This is how I felt about ATWT with Rosanna in 1993 and 1994, GL with Lucy in 1993 and 1994, and Dinah in 1996.

I would flee the shows for weeks or months because I just could not take any more.

I would also have to add Todd on OLTL, not only due to his airtime, but also because they used him to help demolish families and relationships they clearly did not care for (anything with the Buchanans/Lords), although to be fair the show did a great job of destroying that even without Todd's involvement (the Jessica...everything, the Sloan/Viki saga).

    • Insulin amendments to the bill: (compiled from various tweets and articles) Senate voted on Kennedy's amendment – he said he will "re-implement a rule Biden repealed to make insulin available at community health care centers."  Would pay for it by redirecting money away from Obamacare. Murray said Rs should support the insulin price cap instead. (This Kennedy amendment was essentially a bid to show Republican support for addressing the cost of insulin, though Democrats will oppose it as insufficient. It came right before Republicans were expected to strip out the Democratic-authored insulin proposal in the bill for violating Senate rules fir budge reconciliation.) Kennedy amendment did not pass. Republicans challenged the $35 cap on insulin prices for the private marketplace, as a violation of the strict budget rules governing passage of this bill.  The $35 cap on insulin prices for private insurers is officially out of the bill.  Seven Republicans voted with Democrats to keep the cap for private insurers in the bill, 57-43, insulin price cap for private market is stricken from the bill  (needed 60 to survive). 7 Rs voted to keep it in the bill: Cassidy, Collins, Hawley, Hyde Smith, Kennedy, Murkowski, & Sullivan The cap on price of insulin for those on Medicare is still in the bill. That part was ruled to comply with reconciliation rules. Summary: The $35.00 cap on insulin for private insurers was stricken from the bill. The $35.00 cap on insulin for Medicare patients remains in the bill. Senate Finance chair @RonWyden gives out this statement: “Republicans have just gone on the record in favor of expensive insulin. After years of tough talk about taking on insulin makers, Republicans have once against wilted in the face of heat from Big Pharma”.
    • He looks good. When was this? He doesn't have a bad voice. I'm glad he quit Dynasty over the fact that Steven wasn't gay enough.
    • And all were gone not long after Moonves became fully ascendant at CBS. (Though I'm not counting The Nanny.) Yes, Moonves was looking for success. He also had a clear focus on undoing a female-centric image at the network. i'm not going to rehash the entire discussion many of us had about CBS history while I'm recovering from COVID, lol. You can look it up yourself in that thread. It's not hard to search those names in there.
    • The hair definitely 'elevates' this to Big Fat Gypsy Wedding levels. Tiara? You are too modest. It's a motherfucking steelworks up in that birds nest. We knew it would be blingy. We knew it would be Baroque. Teresa lives to overshadow other people. This event is probably the biggest thing northern New Jersey has seen in a LONG time. But the whole thing also looks like it might be a lot of fun to attend? And she definitely understands the assignment in terms of leaking a few insane pics and inviting all these RHs who are going to leak too. This is wonderful marketing for the next season of NJ plus the wedding special.  I wonder if the special will show if Ramona was uninvited, and why Dina refused to attend.
