All My Children Tribute Thread

As I recall from that time, Mr. Frank (Dr. Jeff Martin) and his wife Ms. Blanchard (Mary Kinnecott Martin, R. N.) made the mutual decision to move to California and to leave their show All My Children at the end of their contracts to appear.

Jeff and Mary had been slated to adopt Tad Garner (Matthew Anton), but, upon hearing these plans, the show changed the storyline to have Dr. and Mrs. Joe Martin adopt him.   (This was, of course, after Ruth and Joe had married.)

I don't know if Ms. Blanchard's contract ended before Mr. Frank's did or if they expired at the same time, but the show killed off Mary and kept Dr. Jeff for several more months.  Mary was shown after her death several times as her character's ghost, so, either her contract was still valid or she returned to the show after her contract had expired.

The pair did leave the show, and Susan Blanchard was cast in the primetime ABC comedy series Mr. T and Tina.   I think that people predicted that the show would be a hit, but it was not and was off the air by January of the next year.   Ms. Blanchard later became the spokewoman for Leggs Pantyhose.

I don't remember any regular roles on any television series for Mr. Frank.  As far as I know, his first primetime series was Filthy Rich.    He later appeared for one season on the CBS primetime serial Emerald Point, N. A. S., which was created by Esther and Richard Shapiro.

The producers of Filthy Rich later produced Designing Women (all three of these shows aired on CBS), and Charles Frank became one of that show's directors.   (Jack Stauffer, the original Chuck Tyler, appeared on an episode that Mr. Frank directed.)

After Dr. Jeff Martin left the show, Mary's sister Betsy (Carla Dragonetti) came to Pine Valley.   Dr. Jeff Martin later returned (The role had been recast with Robert Perault as Dr. Martin #3.)  James O'Sullivan became the fourth actor to play the role, and Jeff married Dr. Christina Karras (Robin Strasser), and they left town.

When Dr. Jeff Martin later returned to town (played by Jeffrey Byron - who had just been written off One Life to Live as Richard #3), it was said that he and Christina had divorced.

Charles Frank later appeared as astronaut  Scott Carpenter in the movie the Right Stuff.

Charles Frank and his wife actress Susan Blanchard Frank later moved to his hometown of Olympia Washington.  Either Charles or both Charles and Susan worked (or helped in some way) at the theater department of the local community college (I think he taught some classes and they were both on the college Foundation board, something like that.)  They have sponsored scholarships to students in the arts. He is listed as "Charlie Frank" on the college website.

2014-2015 scholarship funds donated

He's still looking good. Current pictures of the board:

Charles and Susan also contribute to the local youth chorus and the city arts theater, etc etc etc.

I remember when John Tripp replaced Jeffrey Byron as Dr. Jeff Martin.   Tad and Hillary were not seeing each other, and Jeff asked Tad (over a meal in a restaurant) if Tad would mind if he (Jeff) were to ask Hillary for a date.

I think that the show was obviously headed toward a Tad-Hillary-Jeff triangle, but the character of Dr. Jeff Martin was dropped.   It was said that he had moved to California (where Tara was also residing with Jim and Katie/Kelsey).

@Vee If this happened I wonder if the first words out of Althea's mouth would have been, "What's the deal? The last time I saw my daughter she was an Australian cabaret singer."

Haha - also I don't know how to quote a post from another thread without it being a screenshot - dm me if there's an easier way to make such a lame joke.

I honestly have no recollection if the rumor was it was a flashback or she would turn up alive. I just recall there was some major soap star rumored to be playing her that may have hit the mags, I think it was someone from P&G or Sony/NBC and IIRC someone brought it back up a couple years ago.

Also, Adam was introduced with "Rebecca" inspired story of a relative in the attic, so he didn't need more women haunting his relationships and Skye #1 was such a dud that I'm certain they never thought she would last as long as she did, so she hardly needed a mother.

AMC

For years, Adam kept Stuart locked up in the West Wing of the Chandler mansion. When Erica discovered him, Adam's secret was out. Stuart began as an evil entity. Erica was living with Adam, and occasionally a "bad" Adam would appear and try to hurt her. As we found out later, it was really Stuart, who was being kept hidden. Joanna, the housekeeper, had convinced Stuart that Erica was evil and had to be stopped. Of course, he was never really mean, just misled.

Rebecca

The second Mrs. de Winter (Joan Fontaine) is somewhat overwhelmed however when, after their honeymoon, they return to his vast estate, Manderley. She not only has to deal with a huge house and numerous servants, but also with the dour and domineering housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers (Dame Judith Anderson).

I've always thought it was common knowledge how often AMC stories and characters were inspired by classic films, but as Voltaire said, "common sense is not so common anymore." I guess the same is true for common courtesy and respect.

Was Erica ever consistently referred to as "Mrs. Husband Last Name" during any of her marriages? I notice on soaps that no matter how many times a woman is married she immediately starts being referred to by her latest husband's last name.

    • I know! It's like second verse, here we go again!  Agreed. Certainly there was concern maybe even fear at the highest levels for the very good reason that what they had was so economically successful, so of course this risk was scary but if anyone was brave she was. Yes, he was. I have seen her associated with getting it on the air one other place but no details nor official title. Not the writer or creator so it made me wonder if she functioned as a kind of uncredited ad hoc producer, but then maybe she just supported it. At any rate that is nothing but supposition on my part. No data! Yes, not a surprise anymore but still so frustrating! On one hand I am appreciative that she is included in this book, but scholarship where are you?!
    • that wasnt her point. She wanted to further demonize Ted; that was the main focus of their talk. She wants to ensure that Nicole leaves him so that he's free and single to be with her. At this point, I dont think she really cares what Nicole thinks of her; she just wants her out of the way Eva is Nicole's stepdaughter and is a Dupree by association. If Nicole takes Ted back then its reasonable that she would accept his daughter and i that happens, Eva will have welcomed to their country club, be invited to their parties, have access to their resources, etc....much like Andre whom also isnt a blood Dupree but is accepted by them via Nicole. Eva got what she got from Anita bc of Hayley. I think its important to remember that context bc they just dealt with an interloper that infiltrated their ranks and hurt her daughter in the worse way. Now you have another unfortunate girl positioned to do the same to her other daughter. The feelings are still too fresh and she doesnt want Eva to get the idea that she would ever be allowed the opportunity to play them again
    • Oh I've seem this! That's part of why I'm curious! The show could put EastEnders to shame on the gangster Aspect! Oh I've seem this! That's part of why I'm curious! The show could put EastEnders to shame on the gangster Aspect!
    • Eve was one of those characters that had the "Jessie Brewer"role. They had heavy storyline, they burned through it and now they are there for support and a touchstone in the community (Marland wanted to give Jessie story, but I agree with Monty...she best served in her connecting role, and keeping that damn Amy Vining busy so she keeps her nose out of things) So charcters are important and why they should have kept characters like Bridget around (even as she is more volatiles then Eve) who didnt need a big storyline but could have been behind the bar making connections and expostion, but Rauch wanted JEVA/JEVA/JEVA and DRAMA (which to him meant a lot of yelling and stupidity.)

) Mark Dante operated on Jeff? Also, I was under the impression that Jeff shot himself accidentally. In his drunken stupor he saw Rick and Monica together and he thought hevwas shooting at them.
    • A number of errors in the above article. You wonder how with all that research, how  they slipped through. I think they are conflating Women Alone with Lonely Women. I have never read anything of a serial called Women Alone. However,I am prepared to be proven wrong.   It seems Irna actually WAS interested in TV soaps as witnessed by These Are My Children airing in 1949 on NBC in the early days of TV.   I don't believe that was reluctance, rather simply good business sense as radio's dominance began to wane.   Inferring that was somehow connected to Irna who was off that show 10 years prior.   Again inferring that Phillips leaving 6 years prior had some connection to the eventual cancellation.     Again these two events are in fact one. Irna left ATWT only once in 1970 and returned in 72. She was not working on another P&G show at the time. So either she brought the ratings up or they dipped, depending on which above account you believe   Untrue. A World Apart debuted 5 years after she left AW. And AWA aired longer than a few months. Over a year in fact.   I believe Orin Tovrov was the writer. Irna was not involved in the creation of this show. And no mention of Masquerade an Irna serial  which was on air around this time.   TBD finished in 1962. As we see over and over, these inaccuracies are published and accepted as fact.
    • YES! While I objectively found the writing on RH (particularly during its first few years and then again in its final days) to be excellent, so many of the principle characters were unpleasant, and totally turned me off. I could never settle down and become emotionally involved with a group of people who grated on my nerves.
    • Ugh now we get a Emmerdale and Corrie crossover soon. ugh.. How desperate
    • This show is definitely not one to deserve the axe.  especially the New Year’s Eve episode was crazy wild! there is a place where u can download nearly all episodes from October 2019 til today. But they don’t accept new people. https://youtu.be/aD-IXEJjymU?si=19wtpwthSNYOe-4y   this is from this years winter break when the returned. I loved it
