I just can't get past the name Zarf. Honestly, the writers couldn't come up with a name that didn't rhyme with a slang term for vomit? 🤯

Exactly! Shock value and to give janet some street cred LOL! I didn’t like losing him. I understood  the show was in a transitioning period, and was trying to reinvent for the new decade, but Will should’ve been around much longer. The burned through so many more story options by killing him so early, imagine him sticking around long enough to be the one that rape’s Bianca?

Yep.

I have to agree. The name was an instant WTF. I'd have to rewatch this story. At the time I feel like I thought it was lip service and they weren't interested in really telling the story, or wouldn't be allowed to.

They did have chemistry and Jeffrey Carlson definitely put the work in.

I do think we and others can be jaded towards these ideas but it's because we already see the writing on the wall before it begins, sadly.

Meanwhile, the UK soaps have numerous and different gay characters (and who aren't all shoved into the same orbit - well, they can be on Hollyoaks ... but I digress).

I'd have loved to see our soaps be able to be more progressive. But trust in the writers and producers would be nice. It's been hacks for two decades.

Jeffrey Carlson and Zarf was the worst actor and character ever on AMC.   The acting was horrible, the name was horrible etc. Was glad when AMC axed his ass!

Thanks. I thought it was earlier, like 2004-05, but I trust your judgment.

Yeah, it was 2006-2007 like Vee said. I too felt it seemed earlier than that lol but nope

Zarf/Zoe's boy name was Freddie Luper. Did they ever explain on-screen why she had chosen "Zarf" as her stage name for her music? A backstory of some sorts?

The trans story was so ahead of it's time. But the bad acting and writing doomed it. Zarf also had a British accent. While his mom had an American accent. Which was never explained either. Zarf transitioning and the equally awful Satin Slayer drove me away from AMC

I will disagree about his acting, he had a lot Emmy worthy moments. Maybe it was the accent! I Left after his storyline ended too. I couldn’t get back into the show until Jesse and Angie came back.

@FrenchBug82 I wanna say they did mention his name change but I honestly can’t remember.

It felt like they couldn't come up with any other male names that start with Z to me.

It did feel doomed from the start. Imagine someone other than McTrash writing it.

This story probably would have gotten a lot more mainstream attention today. I don't recall the Zarf story getting even much attention from the soap press back then, or maybe it's just me.

I can't recall much either. I feel like it was panned but I could be wrong. It would definitely garner way more attention today.
