I don't think the recastings of Joey/Jake helped with that character and Kelsey never returned.

It was a problem for all shows as the 80's and 90's wore on. There were either no younger generations to take over or TBTB refused to bring back younger family members. eg Charlie, Kelsey.

Linc and Kelly should have announced she was pregnant on their way out in 1980 with that child mentioned along the way and coming back as a teen.

Or Jeff Martin could have a child. The possibilities were there.

Along the way, Tad (and here and there Jake) became the only Martin the show had an investment in. And in those last years, Tad himself was barely hanging on.

The Martins really needed a female voice. Besides Kelsey’s brief stint, the key family members in the second half of the run were all men at varying degrees of annoyingness. Paul could have had a daughter a la Don & Christina Hughes who would show up in the early/mid 2000s. Kelsey staying on would have secured regular visits from Tara.

The Tylers are tough. They started out as a family of only adults, and none of them had any surviving children, so it was easy to phase them out in the early 80s. Brooke was the de facto continuation of the line, though she wasn’t actually a Tyler. I wonder how willing Francesca James was to make more appearances in the 2000s? She came back for Phoebe’s and Myrtle’s funerals, and then she played that other character on 2.0. I think several people said way back then that Kelly could have worked as the new owner of the boarding house.

The Tylers were Linc, who was not given children, Anne who was killed off and Chuck who was eventually written out.

Anne's daughter and Chuck's son were both killed off.

So it was poor planning on Agnes' part.

I suppose Charles could have had an illegitimate child which wouldn't be a stretch considering his marriage to Phoebe. He could easily have had a one night stand or brief affair years ago.

Oh I know - it's just that site put up a 1980 episode earlier this year and we weren't sure of the date. I never could even access it.
