To me, it actually reads more like a book proposal - a sample amount of pages for her agent to shop around to interested publishers.  That's why so much of the work feels unfinished.  (We still don't know exactly what Robin Mattson did to piss her off; or exactly what she said or did that caused her to get fired from AMC for the third time (she imagines it's something that occurred at one of her last meetings with the network, but was it?); or even exactly how you, too, can get yourself fired from a job you no longer want, lol).

Either the publishers that McTavish and/or her agent had submitted her proposal to passed, because they didn't think a behind-the-scenes look at daytime soap operas would appeal to anyone outside of fans; or, they passed, because they generally had the same reactions to the material that we did.

LOL - I have the same vivid memory as you when I was a child watching that haha.  It was clearly impactful.

A few thoughts:

I too wonder what happened to Teresa Blake (Gloria).  I just googled and sadly it looks like AMC was the last thing she ever did and her wiki page has nothing beyond her divorce from 1998.  I hope she's thriving out there somewhere.  Gloria became (didn't start out as) one of my favorite characters from the 90s.

I totally forgot that Carlos came in because of that reality star contest.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the winner of that contest was the guy that played the recast Del Henry, who just sadly passed away like last year or earlier this year.  Maybe they had multiple contests?

I'm just starting that McTavish book you all linked and WOW.  I'm just starting, but I can't believe she called Colin Egglesfield unattractive and untalented.  Was he the best actor?  No, but he was really great on the eyes.  Is she blind?? Haha.

Never cared for Gloria. You are correct about the now-deceased Del Henry guy who did win a contest & yes also there def were more than one. Egglesfield totally odd looking dude. So many fans remarked  just that about him. in this case if she was blind, a lot of AMC fans were, too. Hey, it happens.

This is the same person that found MB sexy. She definitely blind and not FMB and AN like she so professed.

I was never a big fan (I think I liked him most as Desi Arnaz), but many did see Maurice as sexy at the time she wanted him back on AMC.

I remember her being married to a guy in a band (Shandenoah?), which was a factor in her leaving. I liked Gloria too. Teresa Blake was such a unique presence.

Oh my gosh, you're right - I totally forgot about him.  I just googled him and remember - but sorry, I think Scott is even more attractive than Colin! LOL   Do we know why he was recast?

LOL fine - I expect you to watch on April 21

I'm on Chapter 5 of this book and have so many thoughts - she is unhinged!  I'm going to bed and will read the rest this week, but wow I hope some of these things she's claiming are not true.

Not AMC, but that GL storyline of Brent/Marian sounds interesting and juicy - so I spent 5 minutes googling it and I'm surprised I don't remember this.  Usually those storylines, when I was a kid, would have gotten me hooked ASAP.

Also wild that the Lucas Barnes actor was in that plane crash and one of the few survivors.  I remember really enjoying the Terrence storyline from that era.

I must have been either in school, or adulting, when that sexiest man contest was going on.  I don't understand why soaps insisted on these type of contests without actually seeing if the person could act.

And yes, the actor that played Carlos was very photogenic and looked great in photos.  Sometimes a models looks doesn't translate to a tv or movie screen.

@MaximI've enjoyed your 1988 and 1989 write-ups since I like to see what a newbie thinks of past episodes of a show.  Especially during this period where you had Broderick as headwriter, Depriest as headwriter, and then the strike episodes.  Agnes takes back over as head-writer by the Christmas 1989 episodes I believe so I'll look forward to reading what your thoughts on the back-half of the Depriests brief stint.

    • Also, isn’t there supposed to be a storyline with Mariah and Tessa? Mariah cheating or something (keeping some kind of secret) and they were only on screen 2 and 3 times this month. Like what? How am I supposed to care when I barely see them?
    • Definitely wouldn't trust Dinah right now haha.  But that's great to know Billy comes back soon!  I'm excited for that. If he's at the boardinghouse, then I guess he does get closer to Nola perhaps, and then he'll be around Peter/Bridget and J, who is currently in his orbit along with Michelle and Dahlia, and Marcus is at the boardinghouse, so maybe they go the teenage story route most of this time until Billy gets back.
    • Sounds like me, but I prefer to be referred to as Contessa. We all know I can go a long time not paying attention to certain things.  And, if I might add, hey there dude, you effed up pretty good this time and I think this was your last chance. So don't let the door hit you in your behind as you go BYE MOMMY!
    • That did cross my mind at first, but I'd be more inclined to believe it if this didn't involve Trump. I'm not at all sure he is capable of being that sneaky. Of course, there's always a possibility I guess that his advisors are doing it without telling him, but that seems awfully risky. Trump is such a loose cannon you can never predict what he's going to do or say.
    • Whoa. She should have fought like hell to get that. Was it the greatest show ever? No, but it had a fantastic cast and was practically guaranteed to last multiple seasons because of its star power. Could have certainly led to bigger and better things. If it had flopped she could have always gone back to soaps. Judith Light broke through on a sitcom where she was basically second banana to Tony Danza. That grew into a very busy and distinguished career. The woman is still regularly booked to this day.
    • I could understand her being frustrated by the fact that she'd been in the business 10+ years at that point, and probably couldn't even get in the door. But then again, she'd already gone out for pilot season once (that we know of) and she and  her agent knew a 35-ish woman had a very difficult time in Hollywood. I know she did a few guest spots, but other than Designing Women, nothing I saw--not even a Murder She Wrote, and that show had tons of ex-soapers on it. I mean, God bless Marilu Henner, but even having been on Taxi, she couldn't get arrested for years either.
    • I didn't rewatch that period, so I'm not really sure how much Bill is on. I recall something about him living at the boardinghouse. I think Van made Matt his guardian, and why she didn't name Josh would be a mystery to me, other than the HW decided they needed to keep Bill in Matt's sphere. Nola is also his aunt, although they don't know each other well, and Van wouldn't have trusted her anyway. There's Dinah---but she's unreliable. Billy gets out of jail around NYE.

    • That's on Kimmer. As someone posted above...she was offered roles in pilots but she would be part of an ensemble or supporting. She didn't want that so she came back to GL. I don't know what she thought would happen..someone offering her "Here's Kimmer!" or The "Zimmer Comedy Powerhouse Hour" variety show..but her housefrau fans did not have the same pull in HW as they did on the soaps. Forbes and Watros knew that you had to take small parts to get noticed ands start a career in primetime. I know she was in consideration for the wife in Evening Shade, but when you go up against Marilou Henner, the soap diva looses. I could see her frustrated in a role like that, where she has to be the understanding wife with a bit of sass, but she could have made it work, if it wasnt for her huge ego.  I think it would have been an issue haveing all the powerhouse comedy actors surrounding...(lets face it..Alice Ghostly woudl have wiped the floor with her...) but it would have been a good launching padd.
