pannoni4, who uploads a lot of commercials and sometimes soap operas, has a Google+ channel with an episode from 6/16/81.

Just Google pannoni4's Google+ and you will quickly see a link to their soap page.

Youtube channel SMC6 currently has two episodes up from May and August 1989.

The thing is, JER didn’t need those gimmicks. He created one of the best young romantic quads with two pairs of half-siblings with Carrie/Austin/Sami/Lucas and turning the bland Kristen Blake into one of daytime's best villainesses. Both stories may have dragged a bit at times but the payoffs were worth it. Kristen as Susan's fake teeth flying across the yard into Vivian's champagne glass? Carrie, Eric and Mike crashing Austin and Sami's wedding with the irrefutable proof that Austin wasn't Will's father...and Lucas' reaction when he found out that HE was? Ah, good times.

The Marlena clones were briefly mentioned a couple weeks after the fact ("someone reported seeing Marlena in Iowa"). Random, huh? Otherwise never mentioned again. This lil story nugget is just the thing Carlivati could find out about and use for today's stories (and by "today," I mean 2020...)

The quad I'll grant you. And, I know this is unpopular as hell here, but Kristen's transformation, while believable due to Marlena and Kristen's insecurity, went way too far into later crazy rapist land. And the whole Susan/billion other characters dreck was awful. So I hated the thing with the teeth and Susan herself. It was that era - along with the admitted ratings juggernaut of Marlena's possession, IMO, that started Days' long spiral into campy laughingstock. And it has never fully recovered since. JER was great at gimmicks and shock. Actual soap with heart, not so much.

Fair enough! The wedding episodes in late August/early September 1997 were absolutely must watch. Reilly could deliver when it came to a bad guy/girl getting his/her comeuppance. But you're right that stories with heart weren't his strength. Too bad he didn’t have a co-HW who was good at that to balance him out.

I've said this before and I'll say it again -- JER got away with the most audacious storyline he could possibly come up with AND he got higher ratings for it! After that, I'm sure he knew he could get away with basically anything, evidenced by DAYS, PASSIONS, and then DAYS again. What was there to stop him?

I think Bell's influence on his work was clear and he retained a lot of what seemed to make Y&R successful, which also happened to be classic soap traits. He knew how to build tension and hold interest and I do think he was pretty good at plotting. I also don't agree he didn't have any heart (there have been plenty of moments in my viewing so far but I suppose they get overshadowed by the flashy stuff) but I do think he lost a lot of it overtime.

    • Very. They're building up his story again and picking the perfect time to do so. As the SilkPress storyline climaxes and go off in several great directions, they are building up that story to take a turn.

    • @Soapsuds Thanks for posting Night by night Mon 8pm The Rookies edged Gunsmoke but attracted younger(more desirable) viewers.NBC failed with Born Free/Smothers Brothers (how many different series did those 2 get??) 9-11pm  Maude/Rhoda/Medical Center dominated on CBS,but Football and Movies were competitive on an occasional basis. ABC tried  SWAT/Caribe later in the season and the former worked for them. Tues 8-11 pm CBS all the way Good Times, MASH, Hawaii Five O,Barnaby Jones. NBC had the fading Adam 12,Movie and Police Story mmm...don't see that listed? ABC Happy Days, which ABC decided to keep despite lackluster ratings, the Movie of the Week and Marcus Welby-once pulling big numbers but no longer. 8pm NBC had a new hit with Little House, easily beating Sons and Daughters, which was axed and replaced with Tony Orlando, which did much better. ABC had That's My Mama and the Wed movie. 9pm Cannon was the lead here as Lucas Tanner failed to capitalize on the LHOTP leadin. ABC continued the movie. 10pm Manhunter started strong for CBS but petered out and was cancelled. Petrocelli manged to beat Get Christie Love, which was replaced by Baretta-no ratings winner but ABC decided to renew. Thurs Another CBS night with The Waltons and a movie. ABC counterprogrammed with Odd Couple/Paper Moon then Barney Miller/Karen NBC did even worse with Sierra and replaced it with Mac Davis which improved ratings quite a bit. However, it was moved to 9pm for Sunshine/Bob Crane 9pm Some good numbers for ABC with Streets of San Francisco fending off Ironside,Archer and Mac Davis. 10pm Harry O had a slim victory over Movin On Fri 8-11 NBCs best night Sanford/Chico/Rockford/Police Woman. 8pm CBS had high hopes for Planet of the Apes but it bombed. Replacement Khan did even worse. Paul Sand and We'll Get By were tossed in at the end of the season. With poor lead ins the Friday movie didn't deliver. ABC's odd line up saw Kodiak flop, Six Million dollar Man struggle and Texas Wheelers  quickly cancelled. Kung Fu was brought in @8 and Six Million moved to 9. Then Kolchak took over at 8 and Hot*l Baltimore/Odd Couple 9-10. Despite controversy Hot*l flopped. 10pm ABC tried Kolchak then Baretta and finally Get Christie Love Sat CBS lead  with #1 AITF then Paul Sand/MTM/Bob Newhart/Carol Burnett. Paul Sand lost too much of the lead in so CBS spun off The Jeffersons and it was a smash. NBC did OK with Emergency (which beat Paul Sand on occasion, thus hastening that show's demise) and a movie. ABC was a disaster with New Land/Kung Fu and Nakia all failing. They introduced a movie @9 and moved Kung Fu to 8. Sun  NBC  with Disney and Mystery Movie (Columbo McCloud, MacMillan and Wife/Amy Prentiss)did well. ABC flopped with Sonny Bono and recovered by moving Six Million Dollar Man from Fri as a lead in to the movie. CBS hoped Apples Way would be another Waltons but no, so Cher did what Sonny couldn't. Kojak and Mannix successfully finished out the night. Two other shows on the ratings list were Adams of Eagle Lake starring Andy Griffith. Only 2 episodes aired and did well, so I'm not sure what happened there. As for The Law it was a series follow up to a 2 and a half hour NBC special movie .

    • Trust is very easily lost and very hard to re-build.
    • Oh, I know it was. I was just talking about how it's not giving me parallels to Caroline dying. It's really as far from it as possible.  But about the foreshadowing - Hahahhahah. Yes. And you missed one - Liam googling - "what is cancer"...

    • @Maxim This Liam dying out of the blue was crafted in a hurry for three reasons: 1. To facilitate JMW's leave 2. To prop Steffy - 'Oh, Steffy has so much grace and moral superiority that she ignored everything that swine HoLo did to tell her for the sake of their daughters. Queen Stephanie would be so proud of her!' 3. Distracting Steffy enough to give Lunacy an easy way to slither into Finn's life. Once Luna discovers that Lame is dying, she'll play that card: 'Dad, life is too short and precious!' If this was an intentional story, we would've had the typical B&B foreshadowing - Liam faceplanting into a bowl of pasta, Lame missing meetings, being forgetful. Instead, Lame does an impulsive quick quit and $B doesn't even care enough to make a single attempt to get him back? Please.
