Not saying anybody here has said this but, when I have read some other threads, I often get the idea that people want older characters to be involved, yes meddle in their children's lives, rather than have active stories of their own. I have heard this of Victor and Nikki on Y&R as people think that they drain too much focus from younger characters. It's not my opinion, although giving them storylines more suitable for twenty year olds isn't the answer either.

Having her closeted husband canoodling with Luke seemed very 1995 to me.

To be honest a story where Lucinda got too attached to a barely closeted gay man (with the implication being that she knew, but she had come of age in an era where she was willing to play dumb as long as he was a handsome escort to parties or kept her company) and then he ended up betraying her with a family member is something which might have been interesting with better handling but it was so rushed and seemed to be something someone got cold feet about (I'm surprised it got through at all).

I was talking more about her storylines in 2010 as enjoyable to me, although I agree part is down to low expectations. It's the same reason I enjoyed Barbara's material in her last year more than anyone here, probably.

Liz did offer ideas for stories that would have been about Lucinda, like Lucinda going back to school. I wish they'd been accepted, even if in Lucinda's case, her being a spoiler/meddler was ingrained in the character and seemingly difficult to shake.

My only quibble here is that Lucinda gave Worldwide to Lily. Lucinda is like Miranda Priestly- she ain’t going anywhere!

Worldwide could have been a great source of stories that last decade like Succession and Billions. Walsh and any other companies fell so they could have established that company as a monolith like Amazon. Have all the grandkids vying for power with Lucinda as puppet master.

Lucinda/John

Barbara/Gunnar

Margo/Tom...HBS and GM version

Emily/Paul ..MS and AK version

These were end game pairings although Marland didn't create Gunnar.

Emily/Paul is an odd one for me, because I felt like it made sense mostly as an example of psychological hangups - Paul wanted to feel like he was a man, and protecting and loving Emily was part of that. Emily needed to be protected (as they mentioned in the recent interview, nearly all of MS Emily's love interests gave her a gun!), and she also bonded with Paul because they were both scarred by James. Yet I don't think they ever would have worked as a pairing once they both got older.  It's one of the reasons the later Emily/Paul relationships are white noise for me.

Thanks - I forgot she gave it to Lily rather than battle.

ATWT got some flak in the early/mid-90s for having too many companies and too many rich characters. On paper I can see where cutting the material down made sense, but in the long run it left a void. The corporate battles in the '00s also did nothing for me because they felt hollow, and also because I was completely repulsed by Craig. We also got no hint of reality or work in the corporate dynamics compared to Marland or the first few teams post-Marland. Yes, I know that wasn't realistic either - gorgeous people in perfectly tailored suits and tight blouses and skirts - but at least it was an attempt, one which made the people involved seem close to human.

Indeed it was but I was watching on and off (sometimes more off than on, I admit) until I finally quit watching altogether.

I would also say it was horrific for more than seven years, it's just that there were one or two mildly interesting stories to paper over this fact.

I have to agree on the GH sets. But they at least offer some diversity and attempt 'outdoor' sets. I give them credit for that, but a lot of the sets feel generic and lack depth. But that's a sad sign of the times and a minimal budget.

Pretty much this.

The last decade of ATWT was a hot mess. It had some decent/good (1999-2001-ish weren't terrible or bad in retrospect) some over the top (2002-2005) and then .... Jean Passanante just isn't a headwriter who has a vision. And so many casting mistakes.

I will always be annoyed we lost Holroyd for Howarth. I'm still bitter. LOL. (It's easy to blame Goutman for castings, but I know it was an attempt to ABC-ify the soaps for some bizarre reason)

I wonder what happened BTS around 2007/2008. Martha Byrne couldn't flee fast enough and Scott Bryce was treated like garbage. Not saying Goutman was great (he was also a douche) but I saw some decent potential in the beginning of his time (and even at AW) but then ... yikes. (I will also never forgive the sidelining of Lisa as a glorified dayplayer)

The next Locher Room will feature

The Snyder kids will join me live in The Locher Room on Wednesday, June 30th at 3 p.m. EST / 12 p.m. PST. Ellery Capshaw (Natalie), Allie Gorenc (Sage), Mick Hazen (Parker) and Christopher Tavani (Luke) will be here to share their memories of playing the kids of two of Oakdale's most popular couples (Lily & Holden and Carly and Jack) and tell us what they have been up since As the World Turns went off the air.

    • Thanks for the fuller story.  Steve Guthrie was a loss to the show, but I can't really blame Nicholson.
    • Albee clashed with co-star Lee Godart, who portrayed villain Eliot Dorn . At the time, the Edge of Night cast participated in a charity baseball league with other New York-based soaps. Albee, an American, was very competitive about the games, whereas Godart – a French actor unfamiliar with baseball – was not as skilled. Tensions reportedly flared when Albee berated Godart’s athletic performance and even mocked his nationality during these games . Godart took offense and complained to the executive producer, who warned Albee to stop harassing his castmate . Albee either ignored this warning or didn’t take it seriously, and continued to needle Godart. As a result, when Albee’s next contract option came due, Nicholson chose not to renew it – effectively terminating Albee’s role on the show
    • I can't remember exactly, but I think the claim was it involved a team baseball game.
    • Sorry to hear that - take whatever time you need.
    • @MaximI sing this in my head so dang often!!!!
    • Not as caught up as everyone else but I just wanted to add, the show being played for laughs is gone and I’m happy about it, that’s exactly how the show was during the strike.
    • I love the early years of GH.... Does anyone know where I can find information of the stories from 1963 and 1964??  Thank you!!

    • Uh, yeah, huh?!!! Seriously, that was a brilliant line but its acumen is strictly from how hilarious. We imagine Joss in Carly's kitchen breaking the news that she's realized she's gay & Carly is unconcerned & then drops that it's Emma she's in love with ... time comes to a screeching halt!!! I think Moss would likely be thrown hard against the wall. Can you imagine Carly & Robin as mothers of the brides together?
    • @DRW50 Thanks for these.
