All you said was “It wasn’t meant to be offensive.” I just pointed out that it was. An adult would take responsibility for the homophobic comment. You remind me of a guy that I knew who kept asking me how I could be gay and that he was straight and could never be gay but he wasn't racist. He would go off the deep end at times but I gave him his space.
