OK. So I sat and watched the infamous climax of Carolyn Crawford's murder and I've always wondered for the longest--what was the main reason that she was killed?

Also, it always boggled my mind as to why Marland would center a story behind someone the audience didn't even care for.

Didn't he break one of his own rules?

The original story written by Marland was Darryl was the killer of Carolyn and did it for the money and to have full control of the company. Midway Marland changed it because he felt it was a repeat of the Douglas story and he didn't want Frannie duped by another man who turned out to be a killer again. So he had one of Darryl lame assistant frame him for murder because he wanted the money and felt Darryl didn't love Carolyn and he did. The revelation still did well either ranking #2 or #3 for the week among the 11 soaps on the air at the time. IMO Marland made a mistake in changing the ending of the story.

Something seemed strange about the Carolyn Crawford murder mystery, and perhaps you have just explained it.  Marland was famous for always knowing who the murderer was, before one of his murder stories even began on-air.  And his murder mysteries were always well plotted -- until this one.  CC's murder dragged on for months, and involved too many new characters who the audience didn't care about.  Since it wrapped up not long before Marland's death, I have always wondered if perhaps his health was failing, and he just wasn't up to his usually writing zest. Or perhaps he had turned-over the end of this story to one of his assistants, because of his health.  Whatever the cause, the CC murder mystery certainly didn't seem like Marland was at the helm.

Darryl being the killer would've been so much better. Jennifer having a murderer as her father. The Barbara affair. He could've had added story but it was obvious he was short term so why not make him the killer?

I can see why Marland hesitated - having Daryl as the killer was very obvious and there was no real story to get out of it - but I wonder how much of his plans were changed by Mary Ellen Stuart wanting to leave. If she'd stayed, then we would have seen more aftermath for Frannie, especially in her badly strained relationship with Barbara. I also felt like they were dropping hints about a Hal/Frannie pairing in late summer '92, possibly before MES told them she was going.

Martha Byrne in a talk with SOD Podcast claims when she originally auditioned in 1984 for ATWT's Lily, she was up aganist Lucy Deakins (who got the job) & Amy Locane (Melrose Place, Cry Baby)

Martha also states that OG Lily, Lucy Deakins took the film The Boy who could fly & in doing so broke her ATWT contract & Martha was brought in the next day to take on Lily

EDIT TO ADD: Martha on SOD Podcast said her 2008 exit began as a contract issue but the reason she left  was because of a power struggle from the other side and that wasnt ok & became dark. So she couldnt go back to work there.

    • This is (maybe) overly simplistic and nonsoapy, but Doug needs to go to Gamblers Anonymous, to deal with the addictive neurological excitement hits that gambling gives him - and which control his life. Vanessa needs to go to therapy to find ways to remain healthfully lusty and sex-positive, but to stay away from anyone who would demean her.
    • YT keeps commending GL clips to me. I discovered Kathleen Cullen was on in Christmas 1987. Was there any talk of making it permanent  or was this just a special visit? I wish they had made the visit permanent. I liked her chemistry with Grant Aleksander.
    • I'm not sure it's as unpopular as you think.  I just think the show knew they were in a bind, and needed a proven couple for the viewers to invest in. Trying to reunite Vanessa and Ross had just failed in 87. I don't think Ed and Holly's affair was well received, as Simon and Garrett had a brother/sister chemistry. Enter Billy and Vanessa, who give you history and an out not to try and do a Josh/Reva/Billy triangle, which would've really wrecked the relationship between Josh and Billy. I'd have been ok with trying Vanessa/Ross again, and doing a Vanessa/Ross/Holly/Billy quad for a while. I hated Nadine. HATED. She had to be the most insufferable also-ran before ATWT's Julia Lindsay. This is where I wish I knew Roger's history better.

    • GROSS. Michael Swan was hot back in his ATWT days. Now he's 76 and WAY past his hot years.
    • Since she kidnapped, locked up and tried to kill her father's wife I'd say that is still a pretty big deal
    • I'm good with the gushing, too. There aren't many soap icons like John Black, and that's important to celebrate and remember. And yes, life does go on for other characters, but as they say, timing is everything. Going sky diving the day before the funeral? And during a week of shows that were so powerful emotionally? No.
    • No. There might have been a slight pause for dramatic effect after his "death," but pretty soon after they showed him in France getting plastic surgery and getting involved with his doctor, then planning with her to bring Christina to France. (She thought he had good reason to do it; she wasn't a bad person or anything). Now that I think of it, there must have been some kind of pause before that, during the 70s. Rita was accused of killing a private patient for an inheritance when she lived in Texas. Part of the backstory was that Roger had been there, too. Not sure exactly when or how long that was.
