These summaries have been a real treat to read.

AMC: I didn't know much about Claudette except that I thought she was just a spoiler from Linc/Kelly and that she killed Eddie. I had no idea that she and Phil had a brief fling as well.

ATWT: I noticed that regime change to Ralph Ellis and Eugenie Hunt... How were they received as writers for the show? Was there a big shift?

LOL: I noticed the regime change to Jean Holloway has just happened in November 1978. From what I heard, her regime is what ultimately cost the show focus and ratings (none withstanding the timeslot change that was to occur the following spring). I'm just surprised that Bambi was a character on the canvas pre-Jean Holloway. I had figured that Bambi was a creation of this particular writer. One thing I'm noticing is a lack of mention of Meg in the summaries. For a show that is suppose to be about a good/bad sister... I'm not seeing that particular focus. Did the show ever show any gray areas for either Van or Meg during the original run?

SFT: I'm gathering that Henry Slesar was just an interim writer for the show (such as how Lorraine Broderick was an interim writer between Chuck Pratt and the current writers on AMC). In this particular case, was the quality as good or better once the Corrington's took over? They were writer's before my time so I'm not sure of how their work rated with audiences during this era.

Y & R: So interesting to see how Nikki started out as just a flighty college student flirting with the boys, causing headache's for her older sister Casey, and everyone else involved (sort of like Abby nowadays on Y & R). Makes Nikki and Abby scenes all the more interesting considering how Nikki sees herself in Abby. Makes me wonder if Abby's Victor Newman esque love interest is down the road for her.

French Fan... do you have monthly summaries for 1979? It seems like that was a tailspin year for a lot of soaps in some respects.

The Corringtons work is pretty well regarded. I've never really looked into their period, but I know they created the highly popular Liza and Travis pairing. They worked their new families (the Tourneur/Sentell and Adamsons) in with the existing characters. I think they may have slipped a bit towards the end, but they were also working on the bible for "Texas" as well.

"For Richer, For Poorer" wrapped everything up. Laurie decided to off her self in the garage, but Megan (I think?) saved her. Laurie revealled all to Megan and company. Desmond slugged Jason, who lost the presidency of Cushing & Sons to Austin. Lee and Tessa left for Seattle together. Ellie was told that she was pregnant. The last scene, or the last one SOD talked about, was Megan arriving at Bill's apartment and falling into his arms suggesting that the couple would find their way back to one another.

Are you missing a synopsis, FrenchFan? When I was looking into 1978, I had a heck of a time trying to locate the last week of information on "For Richer For Poorer" and I notice your synopses are one less compared to the others, which wouldn't make sense since the serial was on all month long. Also, have you read any of the synopses for "High Hopes"? Hirsch definitely covered the serial, but I think Jon-Michael Reed did as well. I think Reed's were included in the section that often covered the primetime soaps/miniseries, but not all the news papers included that.

The main difference is that Abby is written as a pathetic joke and some kind of weird and dated attempt at pop culture. Not that Bill Bell was immune to dated attempts at pop culture, but he didn't have Nikki going around nude on horseback, nailing men in the pool for her reality show, and so on. He made it clear that a lot of her behaviors were bad for her. All Y&R cares about now is whether Abby's disturbing behavior is fun or hot.

There was a line in one of the SOD synopses which was probably from around late summer/early fall 1978 where after Van and Bruce reconciled, Meg called Andrew to commiserate over loving those who didn't love them (as she had with her daughter's husband Rick). Reading this about Andy seeing Meg as easy money, I wonder if they were planning to put Meg where Rick was -- caught between parent and child.

I don't think Van was ever a gray character until much later on, when she shocked viewers by divorcing Bruce because she felt she was obligated to reconcile with her back from the dead first husband, Paul Raven. (Or maybe she wasn't legally married to Bruce anyway, but you know what I mean).

Meg mainly seemed to be a flighty woman, a negligent mother, looking for rich, hot, slightly dangerous guys, and often paying the price. I think they always wrote Meg as more self-destructive or in need of help than actually bad.

I wish they'd done more conflict between the sisters over Ben when he returned as an adult.

Holloway wrote the infamous mystery of Bambi Brewster's parentage and it reads bad. I don't think it played out on screen any better.

Upton's misuse of Meg was criminal. Meg did insinuate herself into Andrew Marriott's life as she found herself falling for him, while Andrew obviously pined for Vanessa. You'd think this would have produced some good conflict between the two sisters, but the synopses don't seem to suggest this. Online, I've read that Tudi Wiggins was pretty disappointed with her story at some point after Labine & Mayer left and was hoping they could write a part for her on "Ryan's Hope." I have to suspect this was during Upton's reign since Meg did so little.

Holloway didn't write Meg much better, but, to be fair, the Bambi Brewster saga seems to be the only story she seems to be telling. Does anyone have SOD synopses from this time? Meg did become involved with Scott Carmichael, a businessman, who was looking for a lover, not a wife. This didn't please Meg, but she went along hoping Scott would change his mind.

Marcus utilized Meg. A lonely Meg slept with Tom Crawford, Betsy's doctor brother who needed funds for his lab research. Wealthy Meg helped him professionally, so he threw her a bone. When Tom became intimate with Liane Wilson, Meg became jealous and told Tom he needed to chose. During their fight, Meg fell done the stairs. Liane saved Meg's life, but left Meg paralyzed. When the show went off the air, Meg was blackmailing Tom into marriage, while hiding the fact she was regaining use of her legs.

I can't find Jon Michael Reed for 1978 so I use Lynda Hirsch and maybe she did not cover the last week. The last summary is on a paper from early October. I thought it was the last. I guess I will have to check again.

And I will try to be working on 1979 then. I have Jon Michael Reed beginning in September. I'll try to fill in the gap with Lynda Hirsch.

Me too re: FRFP/L&F. Such a short run too, those are the cancelled soaps I tend to hold out more hope for. But as I understand it, even though it was Lemay it wasn't exactly Golden Age AW. I remember a poster at WoST saying the show was very "Frasier" in a way, the tone of the more upper crust characters. As a matter of fact, Nancy Marchand played Frasier's mother on Cheers.
