Such a shame so little exists of a soap opera that was on air for 20 years! It's funny to think that people would set up tape recorders next to the tv as to not miss their favourite soap, but I guess people were more used to radio as a medium back then lol.

The description of The Secret Storm episode archived at the University Of Indiana.

Amy Britton and Kevin Kincaid locate the papers of a Revolutionary War family. With the help of a local historian, they discover that their friend Joanna Morrison is a direct descendant of the Revolutionary War family. Joanna then gets upset when people have a higher opinion of her just because she is a descendant.

Thanks for the alert.

I was one of those obsessive soap addicts who used to set up tape recorders in my house to record the audio of soaps which I was not able to watch live, for whatever reason. I reused the same tapes most of the time, but kept copies of special episodes that I knew I'd want to listen to again later (Jennifer Brooks' death episodes from Y&R, the finale of How to Survive a Marriage, the reconciliation episode featuring Steve and Alice from AW in 1973, in which only Courtney and Reinholt appeared, AW's 10th anniversary from 1974, Adam and Nicole's wedding from TEON in 1973...lots of things.)

I just never thought anyone would else would even care about recordings that were not on video.

UCLA also has some as well:

I think I reached out to them about these in 2021 and was told that they did not have the proper technology to scan or play them if I'm remembering correctly. I'd be curious to hear if that's still the case.

Yes, I saw UCLA had some listed several years ago. It looks like they would send them out to someone (like Obsolete Video Services) to get them digitized.

The ones in Indiana appear to be available to view, but only to authorized people or on site. I wish they would allow streaming to anyone willing to pay a small fee. They have made old commercials available because they claim they have no copyright, but the soap episodes do ?

I have been traveling to various libraries for the last 20+ years researching the papers of various soap writers. Secret Storm has always held the most interest, probably because there's so little to be had.

I've been able to obtain scripts for many years, but the early years of the show seem to be gone forever. I think the most complete year I have is 1966, but I have scattered dates for many other years in the sixties.

My goal is to write a book detailing as much of the SS story as I can, but I'm wondering if I'm the only person who would be interested in that. As the years go by there's fewer people who remember the show, and by the time I have it ready will anyone care?

I think "Secret Storm" is fascinating. I found the document that was posted online many years back now detailing the general outline of the show shortly after the show's cancellation very fascinating.

The problem of the archiving of soap operas is finding where the material is buried when there hasn't been enough documentation done on the early years of the medium. I imagine some material from those early years exists buried. I suspect some of the actors might have a script or two in their collections. There are also times that people involved in the production have stuff buried away in their collections. Also, I imagine how much has been donated and just not properly catalogued yet. That's my hope for the final years of the radio version of "Road of Life" which is fairly well catalogued until about 1952.

The Averys work seems so fascinating and the years leading up to that have some interesting characters that I think would like to know more about (Eduardo De Gamma, Kate Lodge Ames, Julian and Evelyn Dark, and Jeff Nichols spring to mind).

By any chance, were you posting material online for "Storm" in a Facebook group? There was a really fascinating set of story projections regarding Janet Hill and the plans to revamp the show circa 1965 that I found a fun read. If you were, I just want to thank you for sharing. If you aren't, it wouldn't be the first time I made a fool of myself.

    • Am I the only one who hates how this show treats Claire? She's a glorified extra This girl comes from stock the granddaughter of the shows 2 biggest supercouples and they treat her like she's a throw away. Her pop pop is dying/dead and her other grandpa is saved awoken from his coma, alive because of the selfless heroic actions of her maternal grandpa

There is no reason why she wouldn't be here to say goodbye. Olivia Rose isn't doing anything I bet she love to come back and say goodbye. I just don't understand the motivation & thought process when it comes to some decisions. This show is probably still salty about how they didn't succeed in trying to assassinate Claire, on the alter of her dicktimized bird brained aunt & her serial killer boyfriend/husband with the audience.  Also unless they're keeping it under wraps Sami not being back in time to say goodbye to John is a huge fumble. If it had to do with Ali availability then they should've pushed back the fallout of Johnny learning about his sperm donor raping his mother and the subsequent confrontation with Elvis & Sami to conceded with John's coma & death so Sami/Ali were here for it. It's just a huge piece missing from this. As much I hated Sami's overdramatic looney tunes treatment of John long after she was in her 30s, became a grandma, her & John had one of the best dynamic complex heartbreaking father/daughter relationship's on both daytime and the show. It would be full circle as John's end of watch nears, that Sami apologizes for her treatment of him & admits she does love him. He was just as much as a father to her as "Roman", in a impossible situation that turned everyone lives upside down(The 2 Romans, Roman Intitial Death, The Affair)through no fault of his own. How fitting if she called him dad one last time & how thankful she is for his unconditional support and love. He squeezes her hand one last time, calls her Samantha and finally let's go after hearing the words he spent decades longing for in my eyes
    • So around '84 is when things get bad?
    • There are details through the thread, but yes, as mentioned, she hated Ellen Wheeler, and lambasted her for crying a lot, for her decisions with firing and Peapack, etc. Back in the day she also hated Pam Long, who created Reva and gave Reva all of her best material. The producers or writers she liked most seemed to be those who saw Reva in the most generic of molds, although she likely doesn't see it that way. She was OK on OLTL; I think @Vee could probably give a better summary. She was earthy and added her usual hard work to some trash material. There was nothing special going on, as yet again with patron saint Carlivati it was all plot, no character, and he cared more about writing for a cutesy child character.  You're right about what they could have done with Reva. Reva, Erica, and any women who are in story long enough face this problem. The biggest difference is Reva was allowed to age (even with the post-menopausal baby), which Erica was not.
    • Cali was the only Paulina for me on AW.  Was Judi Evans such a “name” that Cali was fired for her?  Judi basically played an entirely different character.  She could’ve been Nancy!
    • They were great together. Barbara was way too high maintenance for any man. You know Henry divorced her a$$ after about a year.  And, here’s an example of what I was talking about…
    • I watch every day as well, and I am enjoying the show. There's always room for improvement. TBH, things are much different from what I expected reading the character breakdowns. That could be a good thing! I'm willing to let them find their groove and figure out what kind of show it wants to be. The core and underlying theme. -I echo what a few others have said: The show is lacking in real romance and cross-starred lovers. But that tracks from (MVJ) experience cause the bell soaps are not good with romance IMO. -I have a feeling it's being built before our eyes, but we're missing that rival family. -I would prefer more variety of storylines. Good ones that could weave together the whole town.   -I struggle connecting to the male characters. So I hope they get a clear handle on them soon. Most of them feel underwritten and one-note. -Find a better purpose for Naomi. I fear she will be the first Dupree dumped. I completely agree. June's story does nothing for me. And what if she turns out to be Tyrell and Samantha's mom? They are very close to leaving high school. why should I care? If she turns out to be related to Hayley also, what's the long-term story, and why should I care? I believe Hayley can work on her own as a vixen. Does she need a sounding board? Sure, but you can accomplish that with an outsider's friend group. I didn't think I would be saying this, but I would entertain Kat having a forbidden affair with Jacob. Both Naomi and Jacob need something to do other than case-of-the-month storylines.
    • That would really just be a redux of the Leslie/Eva story. I really hope they don't go there. My guess for the storyline with Anita that we have "never seen before on daytime" is that it may be a "me, too" story. Anita did unspeakable things to get ahead because of some disgusting producer, and the other person she left behind was a boyfriend who cared about her very much.
    • Reva and Zimmer needed strong adversaries/scene partners. It would dampen the negatives associated with the character and Zimmer's self-admitted excesses. I think that's why she was a bust on SB. I don't know how she did on her return to OLTL because I was not watching at that point. The problem for me with Reva is the same situation with Erica Kane. It ended up being variations of the same storyline year after year. I think if the show had truly broken up Reva and Josh and put them in other viable relationships it would have freed up the characters to have better storylines and character growth. Instead, it's as if the characters were stuck for decades.
    • I am still behind and know what upcoming week you are talking about.

And I know I'm not ready and have not been since the official news. That was my first couple on that show. You won't be alone.    When you put it like that...same. Like I say in the thread when I'm more interested in what people are wearing than the stories...red flag. No momentum. Just stalling.      lol.
