Members soapfan770
Actually I was wondering if people look at the name "Mamie" on Y&R and think it was pronounced "M'am-me" like in Gone With in the Wind instead of "May-me" as pronounced on the show. I seem to recall DeeeDee or someone else once explained it all and the difference way back but I can't remember.
Members quartermainefan
That is sort of cute. I could see wanting a house like the original Cortlandt Manor. When they redid it it sort of looked like Crackerbarrel or some sort of lame home cooking style restaurant where you go for a big breakfast. Members Darn
I know when I first heard/saw it it bugged the hell out of me. I can't imagine that was unintentional. I mean, of all the names to choose...
Members DRW50
Was Mamie the first black character ever on Y&R?
Members R Sinclair
That's what I'm saying. Of ALL the names...
Members Ann_SS
I HATED the name, Mamie. I remember telling my aunts that it was racist and I couldn't stand it. I couldn't stand Dru's street girl "black" talk and couldn't write story either. Blech. Only VR and Shemar kept me watching that dribble.
Members DeeeDee
Mamie wasn't racist. Phil in Whiteface is a WHOLE other story.

Members Khan
Was Mamie racist? I don't think so. AFAIK, however, Mamie never wore her hair in a kerchief or used poor grammar ("Hope you youngins brung yo' appetite, Massa Jack and Miss Ashley! 'Cuz I fixed y'all a whole MESS of sumpthin' in da kitchen!")
Members Darn
I'm speaking solely of the name.

Members Ann_SS
So was I. Naming the sole African American female housekeeper, "Mamie" was as close to racist and stereotyping as Bell could get, imo.

Members Y&RWorldTurner
Not to mention, Mamie got to own Jill's ass from time to time in their spats. Walton and Redd were just heaven to watch during that time period they interacted.
Members DeeeDee
The Abbotts were old money which their names reflected like Ashley originally being Tiffany.
