Mr. Anthony assigned Jazz to watch over Anthony's daughter, Alana, when she arrives home from a school in Switzerland. Jack realized that Nikki was jealous to see Victor give Ashley a New Year's kiss. A scheming Kay told her maid, Esther, to accept Jill's money offer to steal the blackmail photos from Kay. Paul walked out on Lauren in a huff after learning she had twice sabotaged Traci's singing gigs. Makeup artist Foster disguised Tyrone as a "honky" so that Tyrone will be able to elude Mr. Anthony's henchmen. Traci threatened to get Danny to fire Lauren if Lauren pulls any more dirty tricks on Traci. Jill wished that Kay would drink herself to death during 1985. Shawn monitored Lauren's and Paul's conversations.

Jill pawned her jewelry to get the money to pay Esther to steal the blackmail photos from Kay. Ashley was appalled to realize that Jack is upset that Dina is no longer in a position to give him a hotshot job at Mergeron. Jazz was surprised that Mr. Anthony's daughter, Alana, is a cute blonde who's smart as a whip. After successfully fooling even Amy with his white-man disguise, Tyrone laid plans to get the goods on Mr. Anthony's mob through more undercover investigating. Neil worried that Lauren's vendetta against Traci stems from Lauren's loveless childhood. Refusing to go home to Lauren, Paul spent the night at Andy's pad. Shawn tried to convince Lauren that Paul is trying to ruin Lauren's singing career. Nikki's suspicious of Victor's continued interest in Ashley.

Gina talked with JoAnna, who came to town after Neil phoned her to say that Lauren needed JoAnna. Carl, assigned to find Jill’s gems, suspects they weren’t stolen. Jack and Nikki looked for a link between Dina and Brent’s past. Neil asked JoAnna to build rapport with Lauren. Jill freaked when Kay tried to show John slides of the blackmail photos. Using the name Susie Smith, Alana agreed to rend an apartment from Robert (Tyrone). Mr. Anthony worried Alana, who keeps giving Jazz the slip, will learn Anthony’s a gangster. Dina suspected Brent is the mystery man who sent Ashley a valuable necklace. Paul reconcilied with Lauren.

After learning Alana's true identity, Amy told Tyrone (Robert) he should date Alana in order to get the goods on Mr Anthony. As part of a plan to get Douglas and Boobsie back together, Victor faked a shooting incident in which Douglas was "shot." Suffering from severe headaches, Brent remembered how Dina had hit him over the head with a golf club when he pressured her to leave John and to reveal which one of the Abbott children was really Brent's offspring. Fletcher noticed Claire is jealous of the attention Jim's lavishing on Hillary, who has recuperated. Warren suggested Maureen take over his hospital administrator position.

That old goat, H.B., married that lucious young thing, Reva, in Hawaii. Josh was in an auto accident after he heard the news. Bert was optimistic after the amputation of her right leg. Alex was furious when Warren let Ross know that she's been frollicking in the sack with Warren. Trish slugged Ross when he told her that he's seen the light and loves Trish. Nola and Quint named their baby Anthony James. Fletcher and Hillary got a quickie divorce while they were in San Rios with Jim, who received a medal for curing the "Dreaming Death." Mindy agreed to divorce Phillip, then plotted to trap Rick into marrying her. Darcy lied to her fellow gang members that Lujack gave orders to rough up Phillip. Beth was betwixt and between herself over Lujack and Phillip. Fletcher tried to befriend Claire, who was in the dumps that Jim has eyes only for Hillary.

Carl and Mary were not pleased that Paul eloped with Lauren. Patty begged Paul not to read her note which stated that Lauren had romped in the sack with Jack. Victor was relieved to learn that Eve was recaptured and returned to the sanitarium. Julia was livid to learn that Victor thinks Joe fathered her baby. John considered Traci's request that he give Tim a job at Jabot. Dina was curious that Jack pushed her to quickly market the Mergeron teen cosmetics line. Kay accepted Dr. Alan Jacobs' offer to escort her to Ashley's wedding. Dr. Conklin suggested that Diane's concern over Andy indicates that she loves him, not Jack. Ashley was upset to learn that Marc is planning to leave town.

Jill freaked out when she learned that her baby may be born physically and mentally handicapped. A self-conscious Traci bedded down with Tim after he confessed that he's a former fatty himself. Dina was shocked to learn from Jack that she may still be married to John. Marc realized Jack is plotting to take over the Mergeron Corp. Before her wedding, Ashley went nuts and insisted that she can't marry Eric. Patty convinced Danny to use Jack's money to make his music video. Julia warned Nikki to forget her plan to search for Victor's parents, who had abandoned him at an orphanage. Danny refused to let Lauren sing on his music video unless she tells Paul how and where she got the money for the project.

On the way to his wedding, Eric was involved in an auto accident caused by a drunk driver. A hospitalized Eric later asked Ashley to set another wedding date, while she searched for a way to tell him she doesn't want to get married. Marc pressured Dina to give him 90 percent of Mergeron's stock in exchange for keeping mum that she's still married to John. Jack refused to believe that Jill's baby could be his. John objected that Jill wants to have an abortion. Marc decided to stay in town until Ashley's married to Eric. Lauren convinced Danny to let her sing on his music video. Alan Jacobs helped Kay deal with her emotional problems. Nikki hired Paul to check out Victor's parentage. Jazz fretted that his little brother Tyrone will learn that Jazz used illgotten money to finance Tyrone's education.

Jill was hospitalized after she "accidentally" fell off a ladder while hanging draperies. Jack was shocked to see Marc kissing Ashley, who later admitted she doesn't want to marry Eric. Paul was forgiving when Lauren admitted that Jack gave her the money for Danny's music video. Traci learned that Neil made Tim a job offer and warned Lauren to keep her mitts off Tim. Eric pressured Ashley to set another wedding date. Diane was surprised that Andy didn't object to Jack sending her on a Paris modeling assignment. Jack kept mum that Lauren spied on Tim in exchange for the video money, but he was shocked to learn she's married to Paul. Paul warned that Lauren can't live the fancy lifestyle she's become accustomed to as Neil's daughter. Kay played seductive games with Alan.

Ashley told a heartbroken Eric that she can't marry him, and that she's attracted to Marc. Nikki conned Victor into admitting that his real name is Christian Miller. Paul and Andy learned that Victor's parents, Albert and Cora, had once tried to get a then teenaged Victor out of the orphanage, only to learn that he had run away. Frank warned Amy that Jazz will never be rid of his mob contacts. Jazz worried that Tyrone, who is Genoa City's new county prosecutor, wants to live with Jazz. Jill lost her baby, then denied John's accusation that she purposely fell off the ladder in hopes that she'd abort their son. Jack warned Ashley that Marc can destroy the Abbott family if he reveals that Dina's still legally John's wife. Dina and Marc mended old fences. Tim nixed John's job offer because he feared it might harm his relationship with Traci.

RH seemed like a mess at this time. The butchery of Roger's character in those 1984 synopses is insane, and I never even liked Roger.

Don't worry Quinn and Donna...the strange anti-miscegenation forces in Bay City will make sure no interracial couple ever go anywhere. I think poor Thomasina had this same story a year later, with Ben McKinnon, didn't she?

OLTL also seems all over the place at this time, but this caught my eye.

Can you imagine what stories would have been told if this had turned out to be true?

So this is what counted as a story for Quint and Nola by 1985.

Was this some sort of gay gang??

On ATWT, they weren't saying Lyla once dated Frank were they?

Really, looking back, the 80's were a bad time for quality storytelling.

Sure, there were some great stories, but the shows had lost their identities.

The hour format brought too many characters and stories and the constant backstage changes damaged the shows.

Carl you seem to be a AW aficionado, was this time better than Margaret DePiest's or worst? Looking at the summaries, I know Alice was a big character for the show and to have her return must have must see for some fans. Didn't Steve Frame come back to Bay City as well in the form of David Canary? I know both were quite big in the late 60s under Agnes Nixon, you think the return of this once powerful supercouple would have helped somewhat with the ratings for the show around this time.

When Steve returned, the show had been damaged by a series of writer changes. The Alice recast Linda Borgeson was superbland and it became Rachel/Steve which alienated Rachel/Mac supporters.

Jacquie Courtney came back after Steve died again and wasn't given much to do in the year she was there.

By the time Steve returned as David Canary, Alice had been greatly diminished as a character. She was played by her third or fourth recast, Linda Borgeson. No Alice ever caught on after Jacquie Courtney left. The story, which had him trying to settle with Alice but wanting Rachel, sent Alice out of town for several years. David Canary is such a brilliant and charismatic actor but I think it may have been too soon for viewers to accept anyone but George Reinholt, who dominated that role. The writing on AW was also uneven at this time, and Rachel's soulmate was Mac. I don't think viewers were willing to see Rachel move on.

When Jacquie returned in 1984, from what I've read, they barely used her. She spent most of her time as a talk-to for her daughter Sally. Jacquie then left after a year.

I haven't seen a lot of this era, just clips mostly, but from what I've seen, and read about, this era was better than DePriest's. I guess that DePriest's era got the ratings up, but I don't like the woman-hating, serious woman-hating, endemic in her writing. I said this in another thread but what a way for Soapnet viewers to start off with AW -- episodes where one woman remembers her teenage rape and the murder of her parents by her rapist, while another woman falls apart as she tells her uber-judgmental fiance that she was once a prostitute. I also don't like Reginald Love, I don't like the concept of him, or what he did to the character of Donna, and I think that overall he was too powerful and too one dimensional. To me the Loves were women, not Michael and Reginald snorting at each other. That story was also the death of Peter Love, which is a disappointment, since he could have been used for some support for Donna or Vicky later on.

Alice begged the police to protect Sally, who realized that she's being tailed by a mystery person. Cecile vowed to get revenge on Donna, who threw her out of the mansion. Donna cried buckets of tears when Peter told her to get out of his life forever. D.A. Eric Weston arranged for Larry to be sent on a foreign assignment so that Larry can't interfere with Western's case against Catlin. James hired Cecile at Cory Publishing, unaware that her ideas to improve Brava Magazine were stolen from some student journalists. Lily successfully carried off a "Dear Abby"-style TV show. Peter refused to accept Cecile's apology plea. As a favor to Alice, Mac agreed to secretly have Royal's past investigated.

Rachel's little sister Nancy took a shine to Perry after Thomasina mentioned that he's very wealthy. The man Catlin caught following Sally turned out to be a reporter looking for a scoop. The evidence piled up against Catlin during his murder trial. Alice and Sally realized that David was blackmailing Royal. Royal flipped when Sally caught him searching her room for Kevin's birth records. Peter nixed reconciling with Cecile, who taped a hypnosis session in which she admitted she loved Peter. Carl and Donna ended up quarreling after he kissed her. Emily agreed to Peter's request that she spy on Royal. Rachel tried to end her feud with Blaine and Sandy. Alice had to admit to the jury that she saw Catlin holding the gun used to kill David. Stacey sent Mark divorce papers.

Royal was murdered by a mystery person and his death made to appear a suicide. Catlin took Sally to the hospital after Royal injected her with a lethal drug. Later, Sally was upset that Royal's taped confession that he had killed David was ruined. Carl slept with Donna, then admitted a Bay City resident is the cause of the nightmares he has suffered for years. Lily was smitten by newcomer Grant Todd, whom Perry hired as a chef for his teen hangout. D.A. Eric tried to pin Royal's murder on Catlin after Larry proved Royal didn't commit suicide. Sally left her hospital bed to be at Catlin's trial, and nearly, fainted when the D.A. called for Catlin to receive the death penalty. Cecile and Felicia collaborated to write a book about Catlin's life. Catlin refused to let Sally testify on his behalf in order to keep Kevin's parentage a secret. Lily was upset that her TV advice counseling is backfiring on her viewers. Cecile paid seedy informant Wallingford for info that proved David and Royal knew each other. FrenchFan, you are  for bringing these recaps and all their memories to us. Victor and Nikki's 1984 wedding and the episodes surrounding it are among Y&R's best, no to mention it was the best wedding ever on daytime.

It seems that every show in the mid-1980s, except for Y&R and later B&B, tried to copy General Hospital and Days in the action/adventure/supercouple formula, but without the same degree of success.
