2010: The Directors and Writers Thread

I actually kinda like Passanante. I thought when Hogan left she was a breathe of fresh air for about two years. I wonder if the show got really bad because of Goutman. It was him who wanted the show to eliminate cliffhangers and tell short term stories. Sure she's no genius, but I thought she got ATWT decently.

Well there sure was no Goutman when Libidizone aired.

Trying to switch gears here, I totally see what R Sinclair and Adam mean by Casey "Quick Cuts" Childs, as evident in today's Kids.

The camerawork was shaky and really bad in the casino part(the closeups of that shiteous home poker table and the tilted camera with the looks on Ryan/Tad/Krystal/The Casino Manager's faces) The way it was directed, I had no idea what was going on until after the casino manager had left and Ryan chased him out. I have no idea if that was the way it was scripted, but I don't understand why those camera angles and quick cuts were necessary if we were supposed to understand the casino manager was sneaky. I thought Tad and Krystal were merely playing a game of cat and mouse with each other via Hold 'Em while Ryan and the Casino Manager got off on watching them.

Just a simple closeup of what was going on while seeing the look on everyone's faces would have easily done the trick and may have proven more effective in terms of actually "getting" what that scene was supposed to be about. Or at least for me it would have been.

Cool camera tricks are great if used sparingly and used in the right moments. It seems like he was using any excuse to "show that the cameras can move" and while I applaud that effort, I'd much rather see a director in daytime make use of the spaces given and to show how big the room is or how big they can make it look, instead of focusing on objects in the room that are random or have no significance to a major plot or story.

Um, this is weird, why is SoapNet confirming that Jean Passanante is re-joining OLTL as a damn Associate Head Writer, as Toups already said?

You never see these types of reports for staff writer changes. It's damn strange, and adds more fuel to the speculation that she'll be OLTL's next HW, IMO.

I was just reading the latest issue of SOD that came out today, and they have new interview with Kreizman and Swajeski, and the interviewer asked them this (I'm typing it out):

Digest: Have you been working with Lorraine Broderick, who was tasked with steering the writing ship in between the time Chuck Pratt left as head writer and you two came aboard?

Kreizman: Yes. I think Lorraine and the rest of them did a great job of kind of getting right on ship and really kind of getting the characters back to who they were. It was very refreshing when we started to read and watch that stuff and kind of understand who the characters are again.

Swajeski: We did speak with her quite a bit before we joined, so were always in sync with things. She ran things by us. It was really great that way. It was like we were all part of one team, so that was really easy.

Kreizman: Lorraine and also Addie Walsh sort of encompass the entire history of ALL MY CHILDREN, so it's really great to have both of them.

Swajeski: And Lorraine will continue [as a member of the writing team] with us.

Yes, Lorraine encompasses the "good" end of AMC's history, and Addie encompasses the "bad."

Thank goodness! And thanks for color coding!

ETA: I'm not liking all the "kind of" and "sort of" talk from Kreizman. I hope he doesn't write the same way he speaks.

What is Addie Walsh's history? All I remember of her is that she was one of the people headwriting OLTL during their 1996/97 doldrums. I remember someone said that Peggy Sloane was the good writer out of those three.

You meant ATWT no? Because in my files, here what I have for Miss Walsh

- TEXAS: breakdown writer (1982)

- GL: associate head writer (1983-1986)

- SFT: co-head writer (1986) w/ Pam Long

- OLTL: associate head writer (1987-1991)

- LOV: head writer (1991-1992)

- LOV: co-head writer (1994) w/ Laurie McCarthy

- ATWT: associate head writer (1995-1996)

- ATWT: co-head writer (1996-1997) w/ Stephen Demorest & Mel Brez

- ATWT: associate head writer (1997-1999)

- DAYS: associate head writer (1999-2000)

- AMC: associate head writer (2000-2002)

- DAYS: associate head writer (2002-2003)

- AMC: associate head writer (2003-present)

Oh...that's right. I was confusing her with Leah Laiman. Oops

Of those credits, beyond AMC, I'm mostly just familiar with her ATWT stint, which was not great, although that might have been down to Felicia Behr. I mostly just remember that time, writing wise, for insane moments like Emily going on a joyride with Diego Santana's corpse.

I'm guessing because Jean Passanante was a damn head writer of a damn soon-to-be canceled soap, which probably makes it damn "newsworthy."

Idk... just my damn assessment.

Yes, Lorraine encompasses the "good" end of AMC's history, and Addie encompasses the "bad."

Nevertheless... it at least reinforces what I was saying, that the whole bit of David & Erica probably had more to do with Walsh's influence -- who was actually there writing it when it originally happened -- as opposed to Broderick, who was long gone and on one of the other shows by that point.

Casey Childs was credited for SEVEN episodes in a row?! That's insane. That's some weird ass taping schedule.

I thought so too. He was probably in Los Angeles for 4 days and cranked 7 episodes out.
