Here are a few episodes from February to July 1970. I included the previous ones I posted some time ago to give you some reading continuity. I have 6 more episodes from September - November 1970 to deal with.

#4792 – Friday, February 6th 1970

Written by : Robert Newman, David Lesan & Doris Frankel

Len arrived at Bob Rogers’ office while he was dictating to Grace. She left and Len and Bob talked about discharging some patient. Dr. Myer from Riverview called. He wanted to update Len on Andrea’s situation. She was fighting the pneumonia but she was still very confused. Dr. Myer added she only responded to Len’s visits. Reluctantly, Len assured he would visit her again.

At his office, Doug was on the phone with Jo. He thanked her for letting him use her car while his was being checked up. Scott arrived. Doug told Scott that his grandmother Ida had the impression he was fed up with family interference. Scott said he never wanted to hurt Ida or Ellie. He was just under a lot of stress with what Lauri did. Doug was happy to have found Doug was happy to have a son with Scott and hoped their relationship would go smooth. Scott assured he was thinking of dating someone else. He called Marcia Sanders.

After Len left, Grace came back. Dr. Rogers told her that Sam Reynolds apparently didn’t receive his mail after he asked about the availability of some lab technicians. Grace agreed to manage the mail even if she was ready to go. She was about to have a date with Bill Frazier but Bob assured he would tell Bell she would be late. Jo arrived. She was waiting for Patti and Bob would drive them both home. They talked about how brave Len was to visit Andrea after all she did and about the cable he received from Sam. Bill arrived and introduced himself to Bob and Jo. He told Jo he might think about moving to Henderson once he was back from Vietnam.

At Riverview, Dr. Myer told Len about the progressed Andrea was doing. She remembered her name, some places. Len told Dr. Myer that Andrea wanted to forget her past but once she realized who she was and what she did, it could destroy her. Andrea arrived. She seemed to remember about Len being interested in Patti and Sam but very unclearly. Len said Sam was in Africa at the moment. Tired, Andrea went to bed and Len worried about how her condition would change.

At the Bergmans’, Marge told Junior she couldn’t spend the evening with him as Jo was coming with Patti and Len, who were newlyweds for the evening. When Stu came home, Marge told him she was worried about Junior. Stu questioned his son who wondered where he came from. They realized some kids at school teased him. Marge gave him a hug.

After dinner, Marge told Len, Patti and Jo that they had fun with Junior who wanted to know where he was from geographically and Stu and Marge first thought he was thinking about how babies were coming. They had a good laugh. Len turned the conversation to pollution and how mankind could disappear in a few years. Jo called Sam in Africa from the Bergmans’. When Len took the phone, he told Sam that Andrea was doing much better. She had forgotten the past but she knew Len was her son. Jo hoped she would soon marry Sam and be as happy as Len and Patti were.

At the pizza place, Lauri told Scott it was probably interesting for him to work with his father. Lauri was okay with her job at the admission office because the pay was good. Lauri assured she hadn’t dated since she and Scott stopped seeing each other. While Lauri was about to leave because of the babysitter with Eric, Bill and Grace arrived. Bill and Scott talked a bit about Vietnam before Scott left. Bill asked Grace if she had thought about his proposal. She was evasive and thought they had changed a lot since the time they used to be together. Bill was ready to wait. Meanwhile, Scott brought Lauri back at her place. He kissed her before she entered her apartment.

Scott and Lauri arrived at the Justice of Peace to get married. Fran and Emmaline, two women working there, helped Lauri with her dress and bouquet, and served as witnesses for the wedding. The Judge of Peace performed the ceremony and pronounced them Mr. And Mrs. Scott Phillips. He advised them to spend time at a motel down the road. They could say they had been sent by him. At the motel, Scott and Lauri were uneasy to learn the motel room was $30 for the night but when the cleark learned they had been sent by Judge Freddie, he offered them the bridal suite for the same price.

At the Harper house, both Ellie and Ida were awake at night. Ellie wondered why Scott hadn’t come home yet. They thought he might be dating some new girl since he broke up with Lauri or they were afraid he could have had an accident.

In their suite, Scott and Lauri were offered champaign and Scott noticed they had one thing like in Doug and Eunice’s wedding. Scott wondered at a moment if they made the right decision but Lauri assured him they did.

#4807 – Friday, February 27th 1970

Written by : Robert Newman, David Lesan & Doris Frankel

Scott, Lauri and Eric were staying at Mrs. Leshinsky’s, Lauri’s mother. Eric had a bad dream and wanted his mommy. Mrs. Leshinsky calmed him down. Scott assured Eric he would stay with his mother and him from then. Scott assured his mother-in-law he used to give Lauri a bad time but was ready to change that. Lauri woke up and didn’t like her mother’s involvement too much.

The following morning, the bathroom schedule was an issue at Mrs. Leshinksy’s. Lauri was very stressed about the schedule and Scott had an exam. Lauri was afraid Scott would be worried about his new life but he kissed her and assured her it was all okay.

At her place, Grace received a phone call from Bill. He asked if Grace reconsidered his marriage proposal but she said she wished she could. As she hung up, Harriet – who thought Grace and Bill had tied the knot - appeared and thought Grace should tell people she was married to Bill even if Bill had just left town. Grace visited Dr. Rogers and told him she married Lt. Bill Frazier a few days ago. Bob was really happy for Grace. She added Bill had to leave for Vietnam. Later, at the Nurses’ station, Bob told Patti and Len that Grace married to her old flame who came back in her life. Back at her place, Grace wondered if she would be able to keep up the charade about her being married. She hesitated to join Bill in San Francisco before he left for Vietnam and marry him for real but she knew she didn’t love him and couldn’t do that to him. She felt very miserable.

At their apartment, Len told Patti that Sam was missing and presumed dead. Only his wallet and some keys were found. Len added Jo hadn’t been told yet – Bob Rogers wanted to do it himself. Patti burst into tears in Len’s arms.

Stu left his office and was surprised Ellie was doing extra hours for free. Once Stu left, Dr. Rogers called but Ellie told him Stu had just come home as Marge was expecting him for dinner. Then, Ellie noticed Henri Cartier was there, bringing back the car he borrowed. Henri was flirting with Ellie, who seemed happy with the situation. They talked about how beautiful Europe was and Ellie dreamed of visiting someday. Henri said he couldn’t pay tonight because of his bank account trouble. Ellie hesitated as it was customary to pay when the car was returned but she gave him a delay and he left.

At Doug and Eunice’s, Eunice had received a dress she bought for Jo’s wedding. Doug told her there would not be any wedding.

In Jo’s room, she was doing a crossword puzzle with Murph. They talked about the fact Patti might never be able to have children of her own. Bob then summoned Murph. He asked her if he thought Jo was strong enough to hear her fiancé was presumed dead. Murph said Dr. Vicente left the case so he probably thought she was good enough but poor Jo – the accident, the surgery, her eyes and Sam ! Bob quoted his new secretary – Harriet – maybe it was the beginning of a new cycle.

Henri was back in Anabelle’s room. Henri admitted Andrea was ready to invest and the two con artists thought that was very promising.

Patti visited her mother in her room. Jo tried to accept that Sam was dead. She said Sam would have wanted them to keep on with their lives.

In their motel room, Henri and Anabelle were talking about how much they needed money. Henri tried to learn where Anabelle found some money but she didn’t give the name of the people who lent her some cash. Anabelle noticed he sounded jealous and they talked about their previous scams and Henri called Andrea in Riverview. She said she was doing better – she was declared mentally sane. She could come and go as she pleased. Henri offered to pick her up for a drive and dinner. Andrea then phoned Len to tell him that she was declared sane. She was not released yet but could be free to move. Len had to tell her that Sam was presumed dead. He said there was a Memorial service at the hospital this afternoon. Andrea called Henri to cancel their plans as she wanted to attend Sam’s memorial service. After he hung up, Henri told Anabelle he was happy that Andrea was a legal widow.

Ida reunited Ellie, Scott and Lauri. She said she had arranged for Ellie and Scott to start receiving some of their income and not wait until she passed. Scott asked if Lauri talked about their financial troubles and pushed Ida to make this decision but Ellie assured Ida was thinking about it for a while. Scott apologized and thanked Ida.

In the hospital chapel, Murph was seated with hospital staff. Eunice, Doug, Marge, Stu and Bob Rogers talked to the minister when Jo entered with Patti and Len. Andrea slipped in at the rear and stood alone. After the minister’s introduction, Bob Rogers made a moving tribute to Sam in front of his family and friends.

In the morning, Bob was going through Sam’s items that were returned. Harriet entered and told she heard from her cousin Grace in San Francisco. She was very happy with Bill. Harriet admitted she felt lonely since Grace left.

Jo had a walk with Murph at the hospital then Patti arrived to see her mother. Patti told Jo that Len was thinking about being sterilized. Patti was sure she was being punished for the miscarriage she had years ago. She hoped there was still a little chance but Len wanted to protect Patti’s health.

Andrea and Len had lunch at Ernesto’s. Andrea had come earlier as Dr. Myer loaned her a car. She enjoyed her new freedom while staying at Riverview. Len said he talked with Doug Martin and that Sam had made arrangements for Andrea’s allowance to continue but Sam had hoped to be there to judge if Andrea was really legally responsible so Doug would be Sam’s proxy and would be the one to decide. Andrea told Len about how much she enjoyed seeing Henri Cartier and she might consider business with him. Henri arrived and Andrea introduced him to Len.

In her room, Jo received a phone call from Dr. Tony Vincente. In his caustic manners, he told her she was well. After he hung up, Dr. Vincente said his wife Marcy he didn’t have much time to spend with her. He just came for lunch to see her. After he left, Marcy’s companion, Agnes told her she was acting a fool around Tony. She didn’t have anything in common with Tony since she got polio and was confined in a wheelchair. Agnes tried to convince Marcy she should leave Tony and Marcy got angry at the suggestion.

In the hospital corridor, Andrea and Henri bumped into Jo. Andrea introduced them to each other. Andrea had come to the hospital to talk to Jo privately. She said she knew Jo couldn’t forget the past but she begged her to accept the new Andrea.

Jo managed to reach Bob’s office all by herself. Harriet was impressed. They talked about Grace’s new life in San Francisco. It was better than if she had stayed in Henderson. Bob arrived and said Jo he was ready to discharge her anytime soon but Jo wanted to go back at work at the library. Bob refused and Jo said he sounded like Dr. Vicente. Bob assured Tony had a softer side. Jo assured she tried to tell his she was thankful but he didn’t listen.

Marge dropped by at Stu’s office while he was working with Ellie. She showed them the new pants she had bought. Marge wanted to invite Ellie to dinner and introduce her to some attractive widowers. Ellie agreed for a Thursday night dinner.

Scott and Lauri were eating an hamburger together. Scott wanted to use some of Ida’s money to pay a plane ticket for Mrs. Leshinsky to return to Vienna and see her brother as she had hoped for years. Scott wanted he and Lauri to accompany her. Lauri said she hadn’t given her notice at her job yet as Scott thought she had. Scott insisted and was sure Ida would be happy to take care for Eric during their trip. Lauri admitted she was upset at the idea of her mother leaving. When Scott talked about having a child of their own, Lauri was even more upset. He thought of Eric as his own and she didn’t want another child at the moment.

Back at Riverview, Andrea told Dr. Myer about her day out with Henri and how they met Joanne at the hospital.

@FrenchFan thanks for these. Very interesting.

Murph was Dr Peter Murphy played by Charles Siebert.

Henri was John LaGoia later on EON. Previous to this he had been listed as appearing in 69.

Annabelle Shayne was played by Judith Searle.

Tony Vincente had been introduced in April. Guess they had decided to kill off Sam and bring in Tony to slowly build toward a new romance for Jo.

Anabelle was frantic she couldn’t find Henri. He arrived and apologized for being late when he showed a cashier’s check. He was sure she world forget his morning walk with Ellie Harper. Anabelle was ready to start packing but Henri wanted to use this to bilk Andrea out of her fortune. By the time he would have Andrea’s money, he would have secured the reminder of Ellie’s investment and then they could disappear. He called Andrea for a lunch.

At Andrea’s place, Len stopped by to see his mother. He told her he was worried about Patti, very depressed since her miscarriage. He added that Patti saw this miscarriage as a punishment for the affair she had years ago and the first miscarriage she went through. Andrea assured she could build herself only with professional help and it could be the same for Patti. Meanwhile, Patti visited her gynecologist, Dr. Halley. He would like her to stop taking energizers pills he prescribed but Patti was afraid she couldn’t manage without the pills. Dr. Halley insisted she stop the pills. When Len arrived, Patti was sure he was talking to Dr. Halley behind her back and was upset.

Henri arrived at Andrea’s and offered her a piggy bank. She broke it and found an envelope with her loan repaired inside. Andrea said she would tell Doug Martin she was right about Henri all the time and Doug should release the capital Sam left for her and with his capital she would be able to invest in Henri’s boutique. Andrea suggested they open the boutique in Henderson to stay close to Len. Henri assured he wouldn’t mind. Henri charmed Andrea to convince her to call Doug. He kissed her and Andrea agreed to call Doug.

#4959 – Wednesday, September 30th 1970

Written by : Leonard Kantor with Doris Frankel

At the Vincente home, Agnes told Tony of Marcy’s birthday coming soon and they should organize a little party. Agnes offered to organize it all. Tony minded her interference but he agreed to the party. He would buy Marcy’s birthday gift himself though.

Doug and Scott talked about Scott and Lauri having a child but Scott said Lauri didn’t want a child at the moment. Doug assured Scott he shouldn’t let the crime commission mess up with his married life. Scott talked about his work for the crime commission. Doug thought that if Scott spent enough time around people like Dick Hart, Scott would be trusted.

Doug then received Andrea and told her that Eunice was pregnant. Eunice felt guilty about being pregnant because of Patti’s recent miscarriage. Andrea then showed the money Henri returned to her and gave it to Doug. She made Doug notice that Andrea judged Henri well unlike Doug. Doug wondered if this was a lure to get him to release the capital Sam left her. He said she was too anxious to get the money, it was weird. Doug asked for a few days to think the matter over.

Paul Jaeckel visited the Vincentes’. Only Agnes was home and Paul remembered some old days when Marcy and his sister were having fun together. Agnes talked about the party she was planning and maybe they could organize it at Paul’s mother’s. Paul was happy to help Marcy. Agnes assured Tony was happy to have Paul as a psychologist at the Rec House. Paul told her the story of a young man who broke into a liquor store and shot the owner when he woke up. The young man called Rec House thinking he had killed the man but the owner was only slightly wounded and Paul had to appear at his hearing. He added that Mrs. Tate’s help at the Rec House was very useful.

At the Rec house, Al was giving an exercice class in which both Scott and Claire were participating. Jo brought Claire « Wurthering Heights » for her to read. Scott told Claire that her brother, Dick, made him think of Heathcliff, the protagonist of the book – dark, brooding and independent.

Len visited Andrea. He talked about Patti sounding better since she was at Silver Lake. Andrea was in a bad mood as she was nearly taken by Henri. She said the whole business was over and he was back in Paris. She was furious when Doug told her about Ellie giving Henri money to start a boutique with her. Andrea wondered if she would stay in Henderson and try to get closer to Patti.

Stu was surprised when Ellie told her she would have dinner with Andrea as they were both conned by the same man. Stu wished he could have helped Ellie. Ellie said she was foolish and the only one to blame. Ellie excused herself after Jo arrived. Stu briefed Jo about the Henri Cartier scam and how he had fled for Paris with Anabelle, his fellow con artist. Jo had come to ask Stu a favor. She would like him to donate some spare motor parts for the Rec House. Dick Hart was a bright young mechanic who taught young people about motors at the Rec House and he would need them. Stu said he would visit the Rec House and talk to Dick.

At Andrea’s, Andrea and Ellie were sipping champagne. Doug arrived. Andrea said she was angry at him at first for telling her about Henri but then she was only angry at herself. Ellie suggested Andrea they should open their boutique in Henderson without Henri. Andrea was intrigued and agreed to think about it as long as they didn’t talk about Henri anymore.

After lunch, Scott told Lauri he was upset that Dick could connect him with the raid on the coffee house. Scott said that Dick helped him get facts for the crime commission. If he soured on him, he could close a lot of doors. Scott asked Lauri out for a drink but wanted them to see Dick on the way which upset Lauri. She refused to go out and would wait him at home. When Scott left, Lauri wrote a letter to her mother. She wrote about Scott’s involvement with the crime commission. She phoned Murph – calling herself Sally – and offered him to have a drink at the London pub.

At college, Lauri asked fellow worker Maggie to cover for her as she had to leave early. Maggie asked Lauri why she asked her to set up a date between Lauri and Dr. Murphy if she wanted to give him the old razzle-dazzle and a big wash-out. Lauri said she was wrong to follow Murph to his apartment but she was naive and when he made his intentions cleared, she left and he called her every name under the sun. Lauri assured she would not try to spice up her evenings again. She would focus her efforts on making Scott the man she wanted him to be.

Eunice was on the phone with Jo. She said she wished she could help Patti but with her own pregnancy, she knew it was hard for Patti. After she hung up, she told Doug about the trouble Len and Patti were having.

At Scott and Lauri’s, Scott was worried they would be late for dinner at Doug and Eunice’s. She arranged for Eric to spend the night at Ida’s and hoped she and Scott made the best of the night once they were back from dinner.

Scott and Lauri arrived at Doug and Eunice’s and they toasted to Eunice’s future baby. Eunice said she nearly invited Patti and Len as she was sure they would get along with Scott and Lauri but it could have been tactless. She suggested Scott and Lauri get acquainted with the young doctor who helped Jo while convalescing, Murph. Lauri felt uncomfortable. Scott and Doug talked about the crime commission : they gave the politics the information they wanted on drugs in Henderson, it was up to the Governor to act. Scott was upset – he couldn’t wait for kids like Ernie Brady to die from overdoses. Meanwhile, Lauri questioned Eunice about her past. Eunice told her she was from Henderson but moved back after a first marriage and divorce in Puerto Rico. Lauri was surprised to learn Eunice’s background and kind of mirrored herself in her social ascension.

Back home, Lauri told Scott how much she enjoyed talking with Eunice. Scott was still upset there was no follow up on the crime commision but Lauri tried to change his mind by kissing and cuddling. She expected they would climb up the social ladder at some point.

Tony was ready to leave for the Rec House. Marcy told him she would like to see the place at some point. Tony was sure she would hate the place. Marcy admitted she wanted Tony to spend more time with her. She felt lonely and she couldn’t criticize Tony for his patience since she was in a wheel-chair but she couldn’t feel love anymore. Tony assured Marcy he would bring her to the Rec House some day and he left.

At the Rec House, Scott approached Claire who was alone and reading some Mark Twain. Scott looked for Dick but Claire said he was home with a chick. Claire asked Scott a lift to her apartment. Elswhere in the Rec House, Jo was working when Tony arrived. He told Jo about Marcy’s vow to visit and his disapproval. Jo thought Marcy could make her own decision. Tony answered Jo couldn’t understand.

At the Vincente’s, Marcy and Agnes were playing cards. Marcy complained about Tony’s absence. Agnes comforted Marcy’s fears and said Tony wouldn’t want to bring her to the Rec House to avoid her meeting Joanne Tate. Agnes viciously offered to bring Marcy at the Rec House and surprise Tony.

Scott and Claire arrived at Dick’s. Dick teased Claire about her reading. Scott told Dick that even if his job with the Crime commission was officially over, he felt there were big suppliers in Henderson and wondered if Dick could have some lead for Scott to investigate. Dick said that if Scott wanted to keep on living, he should keep his nose out of this business.

At the Rec House, Al welcomed Marcy who introduced herself as Tony’s wife. Privately, Al and John talked about Marcy and they were surprised Tony never talked about his wheel-chaired wife. In Tony’s office, Marcy complimented Tony and Jo on their work. As everybody was about to leave, Marcy insisted Jo come to the Vincente’s for coffee.

At night at the Rec House, Tony told Jo he had managed to find her some more place. Jo was ready to go home but Tony waited for Paul Jaeckel who was doing the night shift with John. Jo thought about stopping by at Len and Patti’s as things seemed very bad between both of them. She apologized to Tony about how she criticized him for the way he acted with Marcy and she left.

Patti realized Len took the pills and hid them. Len assured he wouldn’t give them back as these drugs were illegal and Patti was half-killing herself. Patti begged for one pill to sleep. Furious, Len left with the pills. Patti cried and moved to a closet and took out a suitcase.

Paul arrived at the Rec House and advised Tony to get home because Marcy would appreciate. Tony answered she was used to his absence. Tony asked Paul a favor since he knew Marcy for a long time – convince her he didn’t have a thing for Joanne Tate. He was sure Agnes kept on talking about this and drove Marcy jealous. Paul wondered if there was some truth in the idea as Tony spend way more time with Jo than with Marcy. Tony was furious. How could he imagine something like this. Was he suggesting he asked Jo not to come anymore at the Rec House. He dismissed Paul and said he was no better than Agnes or his wife.

After calling a cab, Patti started writing a letter to Len. She wrote that she had to go away because she realized she was not the Patti he loved. She could never give him children. She put the letter on the center of the table and left. Later, Len came back out of guilt and found the letter. He realized Patti had left. Overwhelmed, he called Jo who hadn’t seen Patti. While they talked, Patti arrived at her mother’s and asked if it was okay for her to stay for a while.

Hey! I have a favor to ask. This is most of one page of storyline synopsis from this magazine. What I need to know is what year these events aired. Many thanks if you can confidently date it.

Search For Tomorrow. (1977). Daytime TV Library Series No. 7.

Free to marry, just as Sam and Mary's wedding day approached, Sam decided to undertake one last mission to the U.N. for Africa. He disappeared but this secret was kept from Jo since she had been severely injured in a car crash.

When Scott Phillips came to town he had no idea that Doug Martin was his real father. He was shocked to learn the truth from his grandmother. It took Scott a long time to come to terms with the man he thought had deserted his mother. Scott met a woman named Laurie Leshinsky. Laurie had a son, Eric,  by a previous affair. Knowing Scott could offer her the kind of life she wanted, she got Scott to marry her. But when Scott entered law school, Laurie's demands on his time became annoying. At school he met attractive law student, Kathy Parker.

Without realizing it Scott and Kathy began to fall in love. Scott and Laurie separated and eventually divorced. But Kathy was liberated and didn't want children. Scott felt she would change her mind. On the day he proposed, Kathy told Scott she had an abortion the day before.

Jo's life was saved by Dr. Tony Vincente. He provided comfort and got her to feel life was worth living when she learned of Sam's presumed death. But Tony could not marry Jo because he felt guilty about his wife, Marcy, who had been an invalid for many years and who blamed her condition on Tony.

If I say anything that has been said already, sorry.

I know that Mary-Ellis Bunim & Pete Lemay had uncomplimentary things to say about each other. I believe I have quotes if any of you want me to look them up. Also because of the strike Pete was not actually there long.

Some said she (M-EB) wanted to get rid of Jo. Some said, no, she just wanted to introduce younger characters.

Patrick Mulcahey said she got a raw deal & an undeserved bad reputation but that she would not defend herself. However, he did & said lots of glowing things about her.

chg. from that to this:

Do you remember the little mag out of Atlanta, Soap Opera Now, I think it was, that was co-edited by Michael Kape, Don West & Joanna ... sorry I've gone blank on her last name. Anyway, today Michael says he interviewed Brian Frons first even before they began the mag, so early 80s, and that even at that point Frons wanted to cancel soaps on his watch. SFT was one & he did indeed cancel it both at CBS & later again at NBC.

Again, if this is old news, sorry.

Leonard Kantor was a prolific and successful television writer until his death at 59 (likely from HIV/AIDS) in NYC in 1984. He was brought in to The Doctors in 1982 to help young writer, Barbara Morgenroth, in the final six months of the show.

Doris Frankel was briefly head writer of Somerset with Winifred Wolfe in 74. It was a much talked about period when the writers focused on Ellen's May/December romance with a much younger man and the introduction of Carrie along with several other senior citizens.  i watched with my grandmother and it was smartly written and entertaining. Doris also wrote for AMC

Okay, I've got someone writing up this whole mag for content posting. I'm happy to share here if you want it. I'll make this, the first post & you let me know if you want more.

Search For Tomorrow. (1977). Daytime TV Library Series No. 7.

Between 1975 and 1977, Daytime TV Magazine, the leading publication dedicated to US daytime programs, began a series of special editions dedicated specifically to one serial.  In early 1977, they released issue #7 which focused on the longest running serial at that time, “Search for Tomorrow”.

The publication contained interviews with key cast members and productions staff, such as the producers, directors, writer and costume designer.  It included a synopsis of the story from origin to that point, lots of pictures and a key item: What it took to make an episode of the show.

At the time, SFT was enjoying a revitalization after four years mediocre ratings.  The new producer, Mary-Ellis Bunim rose up the ranks from secretary to producer in late 1973.  Under her guidance, ratings jumped.  In the 1973-1974 ratings, “Search” placed 9th with a 7.7.  In the 1974-1975 season, it rose to a 4th with a 9.4.  At the time of this edition, it hovered around 5th with an 8.6 rating, winning its time period and coming in third of the five CBS soaps.

Some of the questions posed were:

What did the title mean to the actors?

What is your opinion about the Emmys?

What character would they want to switch with?

Did the actors feel there was a bias against acting on a soap?

When did you start on the show?

            What motivates your character?

I will cover some here & some in other articles. Today I will cover how the show got on the air:

The Show On The Air – Step by step how SFT got on the air in 1976.

At the time, “Search for Tomorrow” was taped at the CBS Studio 51 & 54 on the lower West Side of Manhattan (probably the studio at W. 26th Street that was a later home to “Guiding Light”).

8:00 AM – The director of the day (there were three at the time), the production assistant and actors in the first act arrive.  Actors arrived based on the acts they were in between 8:00 AM and 9:45 AM and went to the rehearsal hall.

9:00 AM – Makeup artist and hair stylist arrive (there was one of each except for special episodes where full cast were part of the episode).

9:00 AM – Makeup artist and hair stylist arrive (there was one of each except for special episodes where full cast were part of the episode).

9:30 AM – Producer Mary-Ellis Bunim and Associate Producer Bob Getz arrive and go to their offices on the second floor.

9:45 AM – 10:15 AM – Director of the day checks sets in studio on the third floor. Actors begin make-up and hair sessions.

10:15 AM – 11:45 AM – This is the time for first rehearsal on set (called FAX) with cameras. Blocking and camera angles are perfected.

11:45 AM – 12:15 PM – First run-through in studio.  Producer and associate producer watch action in their office via CCTV.  Rough edges are smoothed out.

12:15 PM – 12:45 PM – Actors lunch break.  Notes made by producer and associate producer during run through are given to director in production office.

1:00 PM – 1:20 PM – Directors give notes to actors and studio personnel. Final touches to actors’ hair and make-up.

1:30 PM – 2:00 PM – Dress rehearsal.  Producers watch on CCTV and make final notes.

2:00 PM – 2:15 PM – Producers give final notes to directors in control room.

2:15 PM – 2:30 PM – Final notes given to actors and studio personnel by director. Notes on production elements (i.e., does liquor look real? Are props in assigned locations?) given by associate producer.

2:30 PM – 3:00 PM – Taping the episode. (SFT taped only two days before air).

3:00 PM – 3:15 PM – Tapes are checked.  If all is OK, cast is excused.

Thus, “Search for Tomorrow” put on a show in LESS than SEVEN AND A HALF HOURS!  This time does not include the homework the actors and directors have to do before arriving at the studio.  Directors stated it took eight to twelve hours of homework for every episode they direct.  The producer has to spend time reading rough drafts and editing scripts, making notes for the writer, working on long-term story and character development. The associate producer spends outside office hours, organizing all facets of production elements and making sure they are all intact.  On a daily basis, auditions are held, attendance at script consultations and going over the following day’s schedule.  With luck, the producer can leave the studio between 6:00 and 7:00 PM.

Thanks again @FrenchFan for those synopses. I've never known how Dick and Claire were involved in the story. it seems the Rec House was being used as aback drop at the time and was the vehicle to introduce black characters into the show. It was during that time that Irene Cara was on the show.

Dick was played by Michael Zaslow.

Anyway in her book Mary says there was backlash about the stories and the Rec House was dropped.

Adam Wade was one of the Black actors and he later hosted a short lived CBS gameshow 'Musical Chairs'. Appearing on the first ep was Mary Stuart.

As a courtesy I am posting this here in the Search for Tomorrow discussion thread.

SFT KATHY'S ABORTION
In 1964 on "Another World" Pat Randolph had soap's first abortion, illegally.
In 1970 New York state legalized abortion on demand without a residence requirement.
In 1971 with Courtney Sherman Simon playing Kathy Parker & her future husband Peter Simon playing Scott Phillips "Search For Tomorrow" had soap's first legal abortion.
On Jan. 22, 1973 the SCOTUS decision on Roe v. Wade made abortion on demand legal in the whole country.
Sometime not long after that Erica on "All My Children" had a legal abortion.
Earlier this year in my Facebook soap forum, SOAPS:THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY, we were discussing people not remembering that "Another World" had the first abortion. In the Young & the Restless" primetime event celebrating their anniversary of being on the air, it was said that Ashley Abbott had the first. She did not. Often it is said that Erica had the first without adding "legal" which is what makes it accurate.
Just then a poster, Lance Jackson, added that no one ever seemed to remember it but Kathy on "Search For Tomorrow" actually had the first legal abortion in 1971.
I began then to try to find out more about this.
I messaged Courtney Sherman Simon who played Kathy with the basic  query & she immediately affirmed that yes, she'd had an abortion & it was in 1971 & she guessed Procter & Gamble just wasn't as into putting that stuff out in the press as much as Agnes Nixon was. However, she also said she had nothing to prove it, not a script nor anything in print.
One of the members of my forum team, DM James Fairbanks found a "Daytime TV" magazine
©1977 dedicated entirely to "Search for Tomorrow". On page 59 is the following paragraph.

Without realizing it Scott and Kathy began to fall in love. Scott and Laurie separated and eventually divorced. But Kathy was liberated and didn't want children. Scott felt she would change her mind. On the day he proposed, Kathy told Scott she had an abortion the day before.
Search For Tomorrow. (1977). Daytime TV Library Series No. 7.
I typed up that page of storyline synopsis & asked a discussion thread devoted to "Search For Tomorrow" if they could date the events & someone immediately affirmed 1970-71.

This should really be the only purpose of using "AI"--and that is to colorize and enhance old, black-and-white films.

So what is the backstory on this Marian lady, historians? Was she accusing Jo's husband of being the father of her child?

And even though the hotel entrance was nothing more than a sheet (you see it moving when the man runs after Marian), the sets still look 100 times better than they do now.

Yes I thought the hotel backdrop and darkened street was quite effective-pity they couldn't stop it moving.

Marian claimed Arthur had fathered her child in Puerto Rico and filed a paternity suit. Arthur was recovering from a heart attack so it was a stressful time. Marian admitted she lied. But she fell for Fred Metcalf and he for her, but he backed out of marrying her at the last minute and left town.
