OMG

Brimike, yes...it was easy. But I saw that as several things: First, it was almost completely unstated. Indeed, Rafe was only straightening his tie by the time we rejoined the boys. So EVERYTHING was behind the scenes. What you write would more clearly have signalled that "Adam doesn't really want to do this...Adam has to 'steel' himself...Adam didn't enjoy it". What we got is something that is less black and white. That opens up a lot more story potential, actually.

I wouldn't want it to stay thus forever. But right now, a number of my unspoiled viewing colleagues were SHOCKED at what they saw today. So it was for the best that it was all so subtle...it EASED the viewers into this fairly unprecedented scenario. We have plenty of time to make it all clearer. I do hope what you describe...if that is the truth of it...does play out before too long.

She is definitely the find of this last year...along with Haiduk. I hope she gets a story worthy of her. I'd like to see her (don't shoot me) more in the orbit of the Scoobies.

And they should stop smoking, drinking, eating too much, and making Perez Hilton the # 1 gossip site.

Until then....my view is "enjoy the buzz" and focus more on the bare "facts" he presents...less on the interpretation.

Chloe was terrific. I'd like to see her more with her mother and Kay. I'd also like to see her, once this Billy crap is past, develop more of a 'sisterly' dynamic with Mac.

I thought Adam's story was done beautifully. I thought he had fine control of facial micro-muscles. We KNEW what he was thinking and feeling...he effectively conveyed the subtext...and I don't believe I would have trusted CE to do so.

I agree that Rafe was shockingly "wham-bam". But that opens up a whole new possibility that Rafe is not the sweet baby-face he seems. Maybe his is the OPPOSITE of twink he comes across as! That would be interesting. (Kind of like my new favorite vampire on True Blood, a sweet-faced young redhead girl...with fangs that'll gouge you!) Maybe Rafe is more kick-ass than we think...and maybe he just totally screwed Adam in ways that Mr. Wilson can't even imagine!

To be clear, Rafe has now earned easier passage into Adam's bedroom into the future...and more proximity to the botox and other psycho-gear Adam has amassed.

Having Adam "used" a little by Rafe could actually begin to help redeem Adam in some ways.

This, right here, is where I want an HBO primetime 13-week spinoff (like Night Shift) of Y&R!

I thought this was a great episode with the exception of the Rafe/Adam/Heather triangle which I'll start with. I still don't understand why I should care about Rafe. He's less developed than other peripheral characters like Miguel, Estella, Esther, etc. At this point that's all he is. We've seen him as a lawyer with very little character development. The show had the time to develop the character but have chosen not to. Now they throw Adam at him with no build up which made it impossible to get behind. The actual scenes were choppy and I wish we'd at least gotten a kiss or the two on the bed or them shirtless or something. This is so plot driven it's clearly being done for shocks, so why not go for broke ala Passions with Chad and Vincent? Then you have Adam calling Heather, another character the show has dropped the ball with. MAB did great things with Heather when she first arrived, but now? She's regressing. We're no longer seeing her friendships (like with Daniel) or her family ties with Mary Jane and Paul. She serves only as a plot point in this Adam story. That's sad considering she's a legacy character that should be better utilized when you look at all the frontburner stories right now. Removing her as Jabot lawyer and making her DA again is the fatal blow to her character. It makes her the villain going against everyone's favorite criminals (which is just about everyone in GC).

The quad was improving until Sharon told Jack it was his baby. This story has too much back and forth and it's always too soon. I wish they'd pursued the story with Sharon's kleptomania with her mother and past, then have her move on with a new guy (Neil?). Then let Jack and Nick duke it out for Phyllis. There needs to be a major shakeup that doesn't involve them going back and forth with each other if they want this to be a viable long term triangle. Nikki/Victor/Ashley went on for decades, but that didn't stop all three from having countless notable love interests. These writers have turned this into the typical modern love triangle. I loved the twist with Summer getting sick and I wish they'd played it longer before the paternity test arrived. Michelle Stafford's acting is finally back on track and I'm enjoying her. Joshua Morrow did an okay job today and I anticipate him upping his game in coming weeks. Unlike most, I don't think this is going to harm Mary Jane too much. They just need to show her emotional distress over how sick Summer gets. If she didn't intend for Summer to end up in a coma and they show that, the viewers could understand she's damaged. If she pulls a Gloria and doesn't give a toss, forget it! Depending on how the show handles this will tell me if they intend to use her long term or not.

It's shocking just how unlikable Billy is and how far downhill his story has gone. The character has lost his charm because this story has become plot driven as well. They're no longer developing Billy as a character, just pushing this rushed reunion with Mac. It doesn't make Mac look good either and it's incredibly dull. The show missed a good thing in bringing David Lago back. He energized the canvas and would've blown Greg Rikaart and Michael Grazaidei's dull asses out of the water! Liz Hendrickson is suffering too. I wish they'd kept Lago and let him and Hendrickson go to another side of the canvas and shake things up.

The highlight of the month would have to be Victor discovering Kitty. I wonder if Eric Braeden played that for laughs or what. It was hilarious. They are sick. I hope that through it all Mary Jane is allowed to keep Kitty. Even if she ultimately becomes Big Blue Plate, she needs to remain.

From my perspective, it was pretty clear how Adam felt about having sex with Rafe. He looked sick. There was little ambiguity for me. As for Rafe possibly manipulating Adam, I guess it would be a better story but frankly makes little sense. If Rafe believes that Adam is setting up his aunt then why didn't Rafe just continue to look for evidence against Adam. It was pretty obvious that Adam was trying to distract Rafe from looking through Adam's room, so if Rafe is really trying to help his aunt he should have looked further through the room instead of sleeping with Adam.

But I don't think the writers were going for this. Again it was all about shock and then to have Adam have to take a shower and immediately call Heather to have sex with her to validate his sexuality is just tacky. Is this really the groundbreaking way they wanted to tell their first gay storyline? Have an up until now decent man (Rafe) who is homosexual be used by a manipulative psycho and then have said manipulator be so upset about his gay encounter that he needs to shower and immediatley sex up his gilfriend?

And if Rafe isn't the sweet guy he has been portrayed in the handful of scenes he has been in, then why is it up to the audience to fill in his motivation and the fact he may be using Adam? Watch the writers will read these boards and pick up on that fact and integrate it into Rafe's manipulation in 6 weeks just like they did Adam's retcon when he spoke to Hope's picture about his own motivation. We have seen so little of Rafe that who knows who this person is.

Chloe was the best thing about today's show. She is pitch perfect and frankly too good for Billy at this point. Hook her up with Philip IV and set up a triangle with her and Billy when the writers finally wake up and realize that Mac and Billy are a no go.

I love EH. It must be the in thing to have the initials EH. Elizabeth Hubbard?? Cause EH women rock! I didnt care for her on AMC. What a difference a character and a different soap makes.

I like Sharon Case, but did anyone find her scenes in the hospital chapel just painful today. Bad writing and the acting was not there. And the writers manipulate the Phick/Shick fanbases once again and those of us who don't care are stuck in this never ending quad while some of us never get to see our favorites get any screentime.

I was finally enjoying Phyllis when I though she was freeing herself from Nick and now this. And poor Jack getting pulled into this quad again. For what, to set up a babyswitch between Sharon and a hysterical pregnant Ashley. Either story is depressing. Sharon will lose a child after already losing Cassie and a previous daughter at birth or Ashley will lose another child after all her issues with lost babies.

Imfan... I think what your'e missing is that although Adam DID look "sick" as you say after doing the deed... the question is WHY did he look sick? Was it because he used Rafe to distract him, and felt guilty? Was it the sex itself because he's straight? Or was it because he had the sex, and LIKED IT, and is now having to deal with that? That's where all the ambiguity lies. Is it groudbreaking? YES, YES, and YES... because theyr'e not doing this Politically correct SL, a gay character is being USED, like so many straight women over the years. True equality is having a storyline such as this, where they are not afraid to make a gay caracter imperfect, for fear of media backlash. And it makes all KINDS of sense that Rafe would have sex with Adam, instead of continuing to look for evidence. He can have better opporotunity to look for evidence later, when Adam's guard is down.... or even get Adam to let something slip (when all of his blood is in his penis, and not in his brain) Or... Rafe may just have been HORNY. MAB said that this gay SL would be told in a different way than what has been done before. And this is what I see. I agree that Rafe needed more development, the scoobies needed FAR less screen time in the last month, and RAfe needed more. I guess that episode a week or so back (Where Yani Gellman was wearing teh tight jeans) was supposed to be our setup for this, Rafe saying things like "Whatever you need, I'm here for you..." and the caring and concern RAfe was showing Adam, getting him aspirins, telling him he was entitled to blow off steam, etc...

So I finally caught up with the last few eps of Y&R. Still a bit numb after all the deaths last week and all the crazy details. For the first time in a long time, i was looking to Y&R to cheer me up and engross me, but it just didn't.

Rafe and Adam - just reminds me of my college days "You won't tell anyone, right?", and who wants to be reminded of that. It WAS believable though. And I think if Rafe had shown any sort of flirtation with Adam prior to not being Adam's lawyer, it would have been unprofessional and Adam HAD to make the first move. MM is doing a great job all around. Can't believe these are his first days. Yani is a bit green and I hate his hair and that suit he was wearing, but he definitely played the scenes with truth. Rafe just could not believe it - he sort of knows its too good to be true but my guess is (and it's only a guess, cause you know we haven't seen Rafe outside of the Newman Ranch and the courtroom) that Rafe has been really lonely in GC and Adam is a stud, so why not?

MJ poisoning Summer. Certainly not a feel-good moment. Again, through the eyes of this grieving soul, it was the last thing I wanted to see, although the execution of it was quite inventive - a poisoned kiss. MJ is certifiably insane and it wasn't premeditated, so I think she can still be salvaged, but that road is getting longer and longer. Glad the "big reveal" is this week so we can get some more layers on who MJ is and what she's been through. Her being in the dark in the beginning, "I don't look so good" comment, tells me she has a doozy of a sad story to tell.

Sharon's decision really hinged on SC selling it to us, and while she's been brilliant this year, she couldn't make the sale. I just don't see Sharon denying Nick his child, causing him even more pain. They SHOULD have kept up the craziness, the guilt about Brad, the internal turmoil she's in everyday, in order to make us believe that Sharon would make such an insane choice.

Chloe spills the beans. Well, Mac went from saint to sinner pretty fast. There just doesn't seem to be any real connection between Billy and Mac. when Chloe is the voice of reason, you know there's trouble. Glad they addressed why Chloe is back to running after Billy. With EH's performance, I buy her basically wanting Billy to get better - if not for her, then for Delia. and that him chasing after Mac is only going to further derail him from that.

Thanks for pointing out a legitimate reason for that lack of flirtation on Rafe's part. And he thought Adam was straight, why would he even try? Muhney has done ADMIRABLY well, considering he's been thrown into the deep end of the pool like this. My only complaint is this: we got to see Muhney wet and wrapped in a towel (Quite HAWT, BTW) but we STILL have yet to get Yani Gellman out of his clothes??? DAMMIT. I do love these sly little beats that Yani plays in these scenes... like today, when he told Adam... "I can go, or I can stay"... on that "I can stay" line, he had this little mona lisa smile on his face as if to say, "I can stay, and we can go again" .

    • Our next installment of Love of Life 1976 Before leaving San Francisco, Cal phones her Aunt Van to set up a family gathering. Van arranges it, and upon their return, Cal and Rick announce that they are engaged. In the shocked silence that follows the announcement, Meg steps in to offer her congratulations, and also to pay for the wedding. But the family members still don’t respond happily. They fear that Rick isn’t good enough for Cal, and are surprised by Meg’s offer. Rick and Jamie visit Meg and ask whether, in light of her acceptance of his marrying her daughter, she |will drop the lawsuit. She replies that she will if he returns as her partner in Beaver Ridge. Rick reminds her that this has been settled; he can’t do that. So Meg, pretending largesse, says she’ll drop the suit, but in fact she asks her attorney to put the suit in abeyance, so it can be reopened at any time. Rick gives Cal a lovely diamond-and-sapphire engagement ring, and Betsy, who has promised to be Cal’s honor attendant, gives ‘her the dress she wore when she married Ben, saying that a bride who really is a bride should have it. Cal speaks privately to each member of the family, hoping to convince them that she and Rick are right for each other and will be happy. Jamie, after accepting Rick’s request that he be best man, checks to see if Meg has dropped the action, as promised. Finding out that it’s only in abeyance, Jamie asks if she is planning to sue her son-in-law in the future. Meg insists that she has acted on her attorney’s advice. Meg convinces Cal to give her two weeks to plans a lovely wedding, but after several days Cal discovers that Meg has done nothing in preparation. She therefore informs her mother that she and Rick will be married this weekend at the chapel. Betsy goes into labor and has her daughter by the natural-childbirth method. Cal tries to reach Ben, to tell him he’s a father, but has to be content with leaving a message. An ecstatic Ben sends flowers and a card to his wife and daughter Suzanne. Meg, in desperation at being unable to stop the wedding, has been drinking heavily. When she tells Carrie she can’t sleep and that’s why she can’t get herself together, Carrie sympathetically gives her some tranquilizers which Tom had given her. At the wedding rehearsal Meg tries once again to “reason” with Rick, but he makes it clear that he and Cal are getting married as planned. Meg then faints, upsetting Cal, who declares that her mother’s health is more important than the wedding. This gives Meg an idea. On the afternoon of the wedding, as the bride’s party waits at the chapel for Meg, she takes some of the pills, then calls Rick and tells him what she has done. When he doesn’t believe her, Meg becomes even more upset and takes more pills. When Rick informs | the wedding party of Meg’s call, they don’t believe she’d do anything that foolish, but Cal and Rick realize they can’t take the chance and go to her home. Finding her unconscious, they rush her to the hospital.Meg is treated for overdose complicated by alcohol and eventually regains consciousness.Van and Bruce offer to take Meg to their, home to recuperate, but Cal, worried because Joe raises the concern that Meg could try it again, allows her mother ‘to convince her to take her home with her. Meg is pleased with herself for having managed to come between Cal and Rick, and begs Cal not to let Rick come to the apartment, as she can’t bear to have him see her like this. Meg then works on Cal’s conscience by pitifully admitting that she loves Rick and can’t live without him. Van tries,- without success, to make Meg see that Cal and Rick are in love and can make each other happy, but Meg won’t give up and suddenly begins to have “headaches.” Even Betsy overcomes her bitterness at Meg and brings baby Suzanne to see her, trying to get Meg interested in living again. But Meg insists she can’t do anything because of her delicate | condition and has no interest in Beaver Ridge at all. .Rick has to go to New York on business and asks Cal to go with him. She replies that she can’t; she’s afraid to leave Meg. Cal, with Hank, sees Rick off at the airport, and just before he boards, he gives her a letter to read later. She reads it at home that evening; -it’s a plea from Rick to join him in New York and get married immediately. He tells her that their love and their being together are the only things that matter.Cal puts the letter in her handbag and goes to shower.Meg has seen the letter and reads it. Upset that Cal might do what Rick asks, she goes to Joe at the clinic, claiming she’s sleeping badly, and asks for sleeping pills. Joe, of course, refuses to give them to her, and, as she has hoped, he calls Cal to warn her. Cal now redoubles her efforts to keep an eye on her - mother. Meg, complaining of another headache, asks for water to take aspirin and takes four tablets from abottle, which she holds so Cal can see the label has been removed. When Cal snatches it and demandsto know what she’s taking and where she got them,Meg “confesses” that she went to a new doctor for sleeping pills because Joe wouldn’t give her any. Seeing she’s got Cal where she wants her, Meg presses Cal to promise she’ll be there as long as she needs her. Rick’s New York trip comes to nothing when he discovers the prospective backers want almost complete control of the project. Jamie suggests that Rick talk to Meg again about dropping the suit, as every cent Rick has is being tied up by this litigation. Rick insists that Meg won’t do any favors for him, and he isconvinced that her suicide attempt and subsequent emotional instability are just a scheme to tie Cal to her. But he realizes Cal won’t be able to see it this way. Rick sees only one more possibility to his financial problem: Ray Slater promised to help him if hearranged a meeting between Ray and Jamie, which Rick did. As a result of that meeting, Ray informed Ian Russell that he might be able to get Beaver Ridge for him but will require a piece of the action if it works out. Rick arrives home to find a distraught Cal, who informs him that she was warned by Joe to watch out for Meg and, sure enough, she discovered her trying to pass sleeping pills off as aspirin. But Rick insists on knowing the name of the doctor Meg got the pills from, and when he attempts to call him, Meg backs down and admits there was no doctor and no sleeping pills—the bottle contained her allergy medication. Cal is horrified that she allowed herself to be taken in again by Meg in spite of knowing firsthand what her mother is like and warnings from the entire family. Rick insists that she get away from Meg now and go visit Betsy until he gets things settled. As soon as Cal has gone, Rick insists that Meg come out of the bedroom where she has barricaded herself, and tells her he knows her too well to believe she would ever take her own life. He tells her he admires her and would like them to come out of this as friends. Meg makes it clear that friendship isn’t what she wants from him. But when Rick picks up Cal, who now wants to get married right away, and | returns to her apartment, they find a note from her “loving mother” saying she and Rick are now friends and they should call her after they are married.

    • As always, really interesting to get your impressions! I was only watching sporadically during this period (whereas I was transfixed during the Marian storyline), but if I remember correctly 1996 was a pretty rough transitional year. It came at a period where P&G was playing musical chairs with its executive producers--ATWT was hit especially hard by this. The current executive producer, Michael Laibson, is out in November 1996, replaced by Paul Rauch, who stays for nearly 6 years. While Rauch has a few really bad ideas that cause long-term damage to the show, those don't really kick in until 1999, and his first couple of years are very strong. So once you get to 1997, you should see the show rebound significantly.

    • I’m up to April 01, 1996. I think I’m starting to understand what many have said.. things are different. I miss the community vibe of Springfield, when you had people working at the hectic newspaper, the choatic diner, the rich were coming in for coffee, or the TV network was abuzz about the latest scandal. Things have become a little more tunneled into their own storylines. Right now, for me anyway, there isn’t a strong desire to see what happens next, ever since the Brent/Marian story ended. It was a darker, more suspenseful storyline that really got me intrigued and waiting to see what happens next, while everything else was just a nice view of midwestern families living their dramatic lives. And I love that too, when the characters and storytelling is strong, but right now, some things are a little stale. In these last 5 weeks, we had two bigger events: Nick and Susan’s wedding:  it was sweet, but I really found it weird they played music over their vows instead of being able to hear them. Then, they leave town immediately after and for good? We really didn’t get a ton of time with them - one minute Susan is in a hospital bed, post-coma, celebrating the new year, and now she’s married and gone. I’m having a hard time with the revolving door of characters since my early ’95 watch. This year we’ve lost so many characters, gained so many characters, and to what end? Henry’s funeral:  this was so sad, considering the real actor passed. I’m curious what other fans thought about the funeral. Granted, when an actor passes, you don’t have much time to plan ahead, so you need to insert it into whatever storylines are happening at the time.  But sadly, this funeral happened when everyone was hating each other. Vanessa was upset with Matt because the Amanda secret came out and he kept it from her. Quint showed up, with his very young affair no less, which made both Nola and J upset. Amanda was there which upset both Blake and Ross. Roger insisted he give a speech which upset everyone. Vanessa was mad at Quint for bringing his young girlfriend, and then Dinah was so upset about her grandfather, which was emotional, but everyone is currently at odds with Dinah. The flashbacks were effective, and the most emotional scene was Vanessa’s breakdown when reading Henry’s letter to her.  Otherwise, it was a pretty hateful funeral, which felt icky. Otherwise, my quick pros and cons currently happening… Pros: Alex and Hawk are great and funny. He gets under her skin and it’s hilarious to watch her react, but she needs him. They were in LA trying to get dirt on Amanda’s former life and Hawk was living it up with young gorgeous women and all the spending money at his disposal.  Generally, the Amanda and her secret storyline is interesting and I really like the actress. Alex vs. Amanda is entertaining. Tina came onto the scene around the time Nadine died, but she’s been given a backstory which is interesting to me now. She’s a prostitute, who means well, and is trying to take care of her daughter, Dahlia. She grew up with Frank, who has a soft spot for her. Marcus, in a new storyline he desperately needed away from Dinah and his dad, has taken a strong liking to Dahlia. She sings well and he plays saxophone well, so their music is endearing. Sadly, Tina got involved in a robbery gone-bad, where they held up a Spaulding board of directors meeting. She flees, but Frank catches her outside and is forced to arrest her, while Cleary (she’s back!) arrests the main bad guy involved and saves the Spaulding family. I’m curious to see where this one goes, but curious, was Tina actually on the show before this or is she a brand new character? Cons: The Dinah/Hart/Roger storyline is pretty stale now. I need something new. Lucy and Alan-Michael are barely on since Brent left, which is sad. You spend an entire year on a storyline that builds their relationship, brings strife and wedges, and now that they’re finally able to be together in love with no obstacles, you never show them? I want to see them happy! Oh and Lucy and Bridget/David haven't had a scene since Marian tried to get 'a room at the boarding house, which is weird because we haven't seen Bridget react to Lucy being alive. I don't even know if Lucy even lives at the boarding house or with AM, but it's sad pretending like Lucy/Bridget/David were never close friends. Reva/Josh, which is hogging airtime, is a serious whiplash. One week Josh loves her, she hates him; the next week, she loves him, he hates her. He’s always lying to Annie, but now he’s marrying her again, the second wedding in 4 months. I’m also very tired of Marah, her angst over everything, and their overwhelming concern over her. As much as I don’t like Buzz, it is funny watching Reva work at the diner, but I’ll never side with Alan so watching him have feelings about Reva/Buzz or Reva/Josh does nothing for me. Finally, the other small B storylines are only on like once a week which isn’t enough:  Gilly/Griffin/Viviane, Michelle/J, Blake/Ross/Rick, Rick/Abby, Holly/Fletcher and the baby. Something that just popped up out of the blue is David Grant leaving Springfield out of nowhere. He professed his love to Bridget, who turned him down, so he decides to leave when Griffin gives him a job opportunity. Sadly, another character written out for many new characters being introduced. Makes me wonder who is making these calls - the producers, the network, the writers, the fans?
    • OH. The AMC/OLTL Crossover with helicopter, down in the woods, 2 very pregnant, both give birth, only one baby lives. We are on the same page!!!
    • Backtracking because BTG has been distracting me from keeping up with GH. Why is Carly always involved with a paternity lie? Lulu is Dante's (wife? if Im correct) so she has the right to tell him about his son. If anything, she's in a better place to reveal paternity drama than Robin was. As for Robin...I'm conflicted about whether it was HER place to tell AJ he was Michael's dad. Being with a man who's pretending to be someone else's baby daddy is wild. Dante was snoring blaming everyone  but Rocco, however he was right about Jason. A convo isn't enough, neither is trying to be your son's friend. Adolescents need a disciplinarian. At least Lulu made Rocco and Danny scrub the house.
