OLTL: Discussion for the week May 11

I never had a problem with Powell the hospital rapist. I always thought it was bullshit that someone could be "bullied" into gang-raping a woman and then everybody would hug him and take him back because he was "weally weally sowwy." To me, Powell's attitude was the most creepy and insidious; the weak, weepy male ingenue who just couldn't help but stick it in Marty. At least Todd was honest.

So when Powell turned out to be the rapist, I was completely unsurprised. It vindicated my opinion of the character, and I think OLTL had probably gotten feedback from people feeling the same.

I seem to recall a tender scene where Marty had to talk Powell out of suicide and tell him what a good guy he was. It was very elegantly written but I thought it was complete horseshit that she would do that.

That scene's on YouTube. It was well written but I thought it was unfair for Marty to have to forgive someone for raping her under penalty of death (even if it wasn't her own). Powell could have been an interesting character for years to come, so it's too bad he's become a mustache-twirling villain.

That's emblematic of all RC's sweeps. He's way too ambitious, having not only all his A stories converge and climax, but then throwing in another dozen or so subplots. None of them get the time and attention they deserve. It's too much to try to wrap up the serial killer and the baby switch plus do the parties, prom, avenging pimp, exhumation, Spring Fling invitations, deflowering, kidnappings, proposal, wedding, Pussycats etc all at once.

It would be better if he'd edit himself and do a few thing well instead of doing too many mediocre. It worked during his first sweeps wrapping up Higley, but hasn't since.

This Starr/Cole stuff sucks. "We keep thinking about our baby's body being exhumed, but we should really be congratulating our BFFs for going have sex for the first time!" It's time to replace Alderson with a more capable actress.

Powell? Zzzzzzzz

Ray and Dorian!!!!!!! They NEED to happen! The guitar-playing, the hushed-tones, the sweet nothings...I love it.

Wow, there's just a BUNCH of history nods with the Todd stuff today.....the rape and rapists of course, Todd's plastic surgery, Margaret Cochran....

But when did Powell get so protective of Marty? He went after everyone FOR Marty?

Langston and Markko   Their first time is a thousand times more realistic and enjoyable than Starr and Cole's Deflow'ring o' Doom. I just hope that those tampered condoms don't get in the way.

Oh, and what's with the bad Guiding Light music in the background? They couldn't break out the Melrose Place guitar riffs for L/M's first time?

Jess and Brody are awesome together.

Lola could be interesting if Banus was a better actress.

Finally, crazy Lola admits it.

And I swear Jessica Kaye looks SO much like Tari Signor, I keep thinking of Margaret when I see her.

Interesting that we didn't see Roger Howarth in the flashbacks to the rape...just Zach and Powell, and unless that was Roger we heard a few times during the flashback(its been a long time since I've heard his voice, I don't watch ATWT), I could have sworn Trevor voiced over his lines.

    • I think Cheryl was essentially replaced by Josie, and it seems likely that Lemay wanted to bring the Frames back into the picture and for a variety of reasons that it would be McKinnons who would make way for them. Cheryl didn't really get many layers -- she was pretty and kind and sweet and faded into the background so that Scott could participate in the AIDS storyline with Dawn. Looking at the AWHP, other than (not very) shockingly being in love with her mother's adopted son Scott, Cheryl apparently went out with Sam and flirted with much-too-old-for-her John Hudson and MJ's ex-boyfriend/pimp Chad. I know MJ told Mary that she had been a prostitute, but did she tell Cheryl and did she tell anyone about Chad's pimping?
    • I feel the same way about Melissa Reeves' Jennifer. She just makes the show feel like home by her presence alone. I am perfectly okay with them coming in every once and awhile, which probably fits Reeves' schedule better anyway. They're connections to Salem are still there: JJ, the grandkids, Jack still owning half of The Spectator ... they're perfect recurring characters.
    • Hahaha. Jean Hackney, Angelica Nero, and the Falcon Crest henchwomen were all straight out of a James Bond movie.
    • My hunch is what you've described. JFP is likely back working on transitioning the show to a new studio and embracing new technology for its production model.
    • The woman who was the co-chair of Latinas for Trump is now complaining about his targeting immigrants that she thought were "safe." I also read a puff piece from yet another "insider" journalist who lives to normalize fascists - this one with a tech bro who was venting off the record because he thought voting for Trump was cool and would show up the Democrats and maybe we'd get Greenland, but now he's getting upset.  These people still support Trump, and Republicans, they just want to make sure they get credit for being respectable. And they will get it.
    • I really do wish someone could. Just a few characters in very simple backdrops, with very real problems that are just a little larger than life, like the '50s and '60s. All the characters having a level of dignity or respect. And their inner lives are what dominate the story, even if there are outside forces at play.
    • It's a lesson to never be loyal because once your use is up, you're shown the door. MSW was the only bright spot for CBS for awhile, and once they were back on top... they promptly sabotaged the show as a repayment for all that the show had done for the network.
    • The show made a mistake in not bringing in more McKinnon kids, specifically bringing back Ben. Kathleen was leaving, and while I like you am very fond of Sally Spencer as MJ, that didn't seem to be a common view. They also decimated the character in a truly sick storyline. So that just left Cheryl.
    • Between Gwen and Cat, the show often seems to side with those who cause lots of cruelty to Jack and Jennifer. I am half-surprised that the show hasn't brought Peter Blake back for more of the same.  I don't really know if there is a purpose for them in Salem now, but I do feel a sense of stability and rightness when Melissa Reeves is back in the role of Jennifer and back in the Horton house, in spite of...well, a lot of offcamera stuff we all know perfectly well.
    • I like to call her an FC-reject character
