Y&R: Week of April 20, 2009

Sylphie! Could my "These shows need our support" comment sounded any more disingenuous?? LOL.

Honestly, this is how I am thinking. In 5 years, Y&R may be the only soap left. So it try to give it props and enjoy it. And I once loved it so damn much its hard to just give it up. And its so pleasing to the eye. Seeing OLTL's ratings last week, I have started to let go of that show in my mind. Because its inevitable. This is why I don't even have pets. It would kill me to have one die on me!!

And I miss my Nikki. I want her front and center all the time. (Others may not feel the same way).

I understand all that. I honestly do. Because I felt the same way up until not so long ago. Then I realised how much harm that kind of attitude did. Just my opinion, of course. ;)

As for Nikki, you're obviously not in the know. :D I hate both her and Melody.

Furthermore, although it's "just the Internet" and you should be able just to relax, be yourself and "enjoy the show," truth is, you can't. So, after having to defend yourself one too many times over what's just a silly, inane comment on a message board and not meant to be the start of World War III, you simply throw up your hands, and say, "I give! The Internet wins! If you just want me to sit here and regurgitate the same, dry, humorless comments that have been made ten times over, then that's what you'll get."

Gee. Aren't we having so much fun?

So much truth... I don't know what else to say.

I wanted to go off the wall on the Casiello stuff earlier in this thread. And I had to be honest with myself as to my dislike for him and why I was gonna start ragging on him. My agenda, if you will. Simple fact was I did not like him trashing OLTL (amongst the Y&R symphony stuff) with that insanely condescending "Oh, its the poor, pathetic show that has just never found its identity).

So it wouldn't be fair to judge his episodes/talent when I already have an agenda and ax to grind with him. That would be causing drama for no reason other than to cause drama.

Its hard sometimes to keep your opinions truly based on whats real vs. your agenda. He may actually be an awesome guy and a fantastic scriptwriter too. But I will never admit it! lol.

How dare YOU!

If you have backstage dish , PM me. I love having my loyalties tested.

I have always read that she is relatively standoffish. SO IS NIKKI! I LOVE it.

I am seriously starting to doubt that. I mean, if something is not good, you should say it and change the channel. Because I think one does more damage in staying loyal to a cr*ppy soap than just plain not watching it. By watching you allow the current regime (network executive, executive producer, head writer) to remain in place as long as possible.

See, I agree with you entirely.

The "evolution" you have talked about before cannot happen with old chestnuts that have outlived their lifespans. Reinventing them into something else is fool-hardy, because it carries so much baggage from the past. AND, if you don't honor that past, you squander what a long-running show gives you ... the gift of historical threads that brought you to today (in plot, character, motivation, etc.).

When a show has reached the point of "saturated logic" (Irna Phillips), let it die. Then, when the market forces are right, something will spring up in the ruins. It might be on at night, it might not be five days a week, it might be VERY different from anything we see now...but it will come.

I have another research request...just a small one.

There is a raging debate on DC between Jamey Giddens and a correspondent about the true harm that LML did to the ratings.

It's time to put real tools to answer the question.

I'm working of Toups "Resource Archive", and I just want to confirm these start dates with you all:

LML, Alden and Smith: 2/16/2006

LML, Alden: 11/13/2006

LML: 12/26/2006

JG & MAB: 12/26/2007

MAB: 4/22/2008

Now, I know there were other configurations of co-HW, etc, but do these sound right?

My plan is to PRECISELY estimate the slope of absolute and relative change during these periods. I plan to look at three different numbers: (a) overall change (which will be decline); (B) periods of growth, stability and decline (because I still think LML actually had more gain than decline during the early part of her run, whereas MAB was pure bleeding for the first part of her run); and © proportional change from starting base, probably unitized to a 12-month period to facilitate comparisons.

I wanna put this debate about whether LML was NUMERICALLY harmful to bed once and for all :)

I totally agree that that 12+month period after Smith and Alden left, in particular, was a disaster. But numerically...I think the early part of that was a shocking success.

My specific recollection was that the Reliquary/death of John Abbott and Pheila (gag, I know it!) substantially goosed the ratings. My recollection was that after Pheila, though, LML lost momentum and ratings fell. I want to see if I can back all that up.

(If anyone knows the specific dates of the above mentioned storylines, that would help too. I'm actually eager to find the run dates of the following storylines...which I might be able to figure out--if I get time--looking at SOC:

Brad/George Kaplan/Reliquary

Victor's Epilepsy

John's cardiovascular challenges, confusion, death, and immediate aftermath

Senate Race/Clear Springs

Sabrina-introduction through death (I know that was August 2008)

Kay/Marge tale (beginning in October/November 2008 and ending in April 2009) )

We're gonna find the definitive answer to these questions! :)

MarkH - you are the perfect man for such a job. Your passion for all things Y&R is so extraordinary and yes - validating! :)

Nope. The bloody face is going to be all up in your grill when you watch it!

When Heather called the Newman Ranch a "mausoleum," I was like WTF? Adam is not being held prisoner in the Chancellor Estate! That word belongs to Jill Foster Abbott, Brenda Dickson style!

I SO agree! They aren't doing Heather any favors by consistantly puting her in these awkward and half-assed stories. Whoever wrote that line for her needs a history lesson!!

Oh Phyllis, you dumb bitch. I cant beleive she thought she could get Victor to turn on Sharon by ratting her out

LOL! No drama. I talked to RTR. I just didn't want him to take what I said the wrong way. All is right with the world. :)

Just realized that the 'swoosh'effect between scenes that was used often last year is no more.

Would that be the editors department or the director? Or would Paul rauch make a directive for it to be dropped.

I didn't mind it,but it was overused at times.

They are still using the effect where an actor(usually an extra )walks across the screen and after passing ,it is a new scene.

That fall and early winter (Oct 2006 to January 2007) when the ratings increased also focused on Lauren giving birth to Fen followed by her PPD story along with the murder of Carmen Mesta story when Dru was under suspicion of Carmen's murder.

I have never been this bored. I'm trying to stick with it but its just not my thing.

If Y&R is not "your show" (I believe OLTL is, right?) then quit if you're bored. ATWT/AMC/GH weren't "my show" (DAYS is and that's why I never stopped watching no matter how bad it got) and I dropped them all at the same time in February. It frees up more time to do others things/watch other shows. :)

Is this true? I'd rather have

Rafe and Phillip IV

That's what I was thinking.

I love you. Seriously. You are so consistent. I love that you're such an advocate of the characters you love!

If think it would make more sense if it were someone like Phillip IV.

Giving Victor a gay son would not be a good idea IMO. Only because Victor turns out to be so harsh in most cases, I don't think his character would handle it well.
