Nope.
Ideologically, I realize he felt compelled to return to Russia, after his miraculous recovery from having been poisoned, but his return really did seal his fate. He was arrested upon arrival, so I am not really sure whether or not he couldn’t have achieved his goals from exile in Germany-it certainly would have given him more time.

His argument was that he couldn't ask Russians at home to risk their lives and protest while he lived in safety abroad. But yes, returning to Russia made his fate almost inevitable, although I always hoped that he would make it through his prison sentence and return to his family. A dark day for democracy -- I had a lot of respect for this brave individual who seemed to know it might end this way but carried on, hopeful, that he might precipitate change against the odds.

I believe Navalny knew what would happen to him if he returned.  Including his death. Heck he could have died in Germany or anywhere else in exile as it was had he not returned as happened when they poisoned him and he was lucky enough to live.  Maybe he was hoping his death could set a trajectory that would lead to changes.  I am skeptical.

I follow Tom Nichols on twitter and have read his books and a lot of his writing. He used to be involved in the National Security apparatus and was a teacher at the Naval War College before he started his writing career. He now writes for The Atlantic primarily. He also spent several years in Moscow.

His perspective on the Russian people are that they believe themselves to be victims and looked down upon by the west. This preceeds current leadership and goes back many years. And keep in mind Russia is only to happy to continue to feed this paranoia in their own people.  I am guessing the population in the cities such as Moscow and St. Petersburg might be different because you are likely dealing with a better educated population. We'll see if anything changes but can anything really? time will tell.

I saw someone saying that many want to assign values of nobility to many Russian decisions that can really be boiled down to just wanting savagery. That is probably not entirely fair, but I would say it is in the case of Putin and a number of other leaders before him. We see that over and over with so many in the West who hate their countries and cling to Putin as some embattled hero fighting for their future, only for him to say, over and over, it's not about any of that - he just wants to conquer and conquer and conquer.

There is not going to be any moment of uprising or reckoning for Putin, especially not from his own people. I can understand why Navalny, who likely knew he and his family were facing death if he did stay away, may have wanted to return and possibly be part of that change, even at cost of his own life, but it won't happen. Putin waged decimation against millions of Ukranians and yet so many inside and outside of Russia still cheer him all the way.

This type of response, against Grandpa Bernie (who is now part of the evil establishment), sums up today's left:

From what I have been reading, between the $355 million judgement against Trump, including interest, the $83 million judgment against him in the E. Jean Carroll defamation case could wipe out all his cash on hand and liquidity. Good.

Also, what self respecting business would want to do business with a company that not only has to operate under a court appointed independent monitor, who has just been granted enhanced monitoring powers as well as an independent financial compliance director?

People are talking about Trump and his sons being banned for 3 and two years, but two of the company’s officers are banned for life. Not a good look. Real estate prospects can change in a New York minute. Reading the particulars of this judgement has been fun.

Another problem is that the opposition itself in Russia is very fractured. I remember years ago when I first read about Navalny, I was hearing that he had association with people who espoused nationalist and anti-immigrant sentiment, which always made me view him somewhat skeptically but I was never sure whether that was Kremlin manufactured “dezinformatsiya” (and let’s face it, these elements exist in the Russian government, they exist in Ukraine as well) or even if Navalny personally espoused these beliefs. It did make me uncomfortable though. And maybe it might have dissuaded some from uniting as a larger opposition movement.

In movements worldwide, I know that people like to focus on one charismatic leader but it has shown not to work in Russia when it comes to democracy or anything resembling a democratic movement. And there seems to be no signs of coalition politics, at least from the outside.

Yeah I know Navalny had a following but some of his views from years past are really awful and I think the only reason the people in the West embraced him was he was a foe to Putin. Did it even matter that some of his views were shared by Putin and his entourage?

The only real opposition in Russia today is the Communist Party and with that I believe they only hold 125 seats in the Duma out of around 400-450. Most of the remainder are held by United Russia which is the Party Putin is a member of.

Last year when Prigozhin and his contingent were on the march to wherever with alleged designs on overthrowing the current gvmt(who knows), people were celebrating in the West. Prigozhin is as bad if not worse than Putin. What does that say.

    • One thing I thought about is if Hayley will have a reaction to Bill threatening to kidnap and sell a baby. That's another level of viciousness and with her just having thought she was pregnant it might make her feel some type of way.
    • You're welcome. Fall 1982-Spring 1985 was the peak of primetime soaps. What a time to have been alive.
    • 1990/91 Cheers, Roseanne, A Different World, The Cosby Show, Empty Nest, The Golden Girls were still Top 10 shows, and Murphy Brown and Designing Women became Top 10 shows. It was the following season that I think was the transition season for sitcoms.
    • @xtr I loved Martin in Thursday's episode, he was almost a different character. I thought he was flirty, funny, carefree, and giggly. Glad I have someone to share my top 2 women(Nicole and Eva) with, I agree Nicole is the heart of the Dupree family, and also the heart of the show IMO. We rode into the show on the passenger side of her car, lol. What I am enjoying the most about the show, is that they did such a great job character building, because all I care about is the CHARACTER journey. Nicole, Eva, Leslie, Dani, Chelsea, etc. very invested in what's coming next. I even feel that way about Mona, Shanice, and Doug.
    • I know we have discussed the fact that Another World seemed to be planning a location shoot in Finland that got cancelled. I came across this item from the syndicated Soapbox column published June 14, 1982. "Soap operas have been experimenting extensively with on-location shooting in recent years to enhance storylines and increase their viewing audience. A major drawback is the added production costs involved. Another World, for example, cancelled a special trip for Victoria Wyndham (Rachel Cory on the show), who was scheduled to shoot scenes in Finland. The producers felt that the high price tag, along with resentment of the cast members who also wanted to travel but were to be left behind. was enough to scrap the whole project."
    • A few more thoughts about these last two episodes. I thought it was interesting how much disdain both Dani/Anita have for Eva. I thought it was amusing how Dani was calling her lying/conniving and how Anita pointed as if to say, "that part". They definitely are not here for her, and I could see them having harsh confrontations with her in addition to Leslie. I'm curious to see Kat's interaction with Eva on Monday's episode. I think it might be interesting if Kat (along with possibly Naomi/Chelsea) come around to Eva before Dani/Anita do. Of course, Kat will be understandably angry at her. But maybe a tiny part of her might feel sorry for her if she really does believe that she's Ted's daughter as well and that Leslie lied to her. I could see Kat confronting Eva again and warning her not to harm her family anymore. But I could also possibly see Kat admitting that what Ted/Leslie did regarding her was messed up as well. And maybe that will pave the way down the line for them to get along better. I also agree with the comments/speculation made in the threat that Nicole will eventually accept/probably love her someday as well. I still wouldn't mind if somehow Nicole ended up being her biological mother. They have both been acting like they care for each other in this storyline. Nicole somehow ending up being her mother would be soapy and provide some more interesting layers in this story. And regarding Andre/Dani's romance it seems like they are genuinely developing feelings for each other. I have missed episodes, so maybe more of this has been elaborated on. But it seemed like there was genuine affection between both of them when they snuck a kiss publicly in the hotel. And also, them both talking about going publicly with their relationship. I wonder what everyone's reactions will be should they be caught by someone together. Of if they flat out tell everyone about their relationship.
    • I was wondering what week it was, and it explains the low rating for Knots Landing. I was also wondering what preempted Dallas and Falcon Crest.
    • Interesting take on Dallas. Frankly I think the plot of JR Returns should have been the way Dallas ended but for whatever reason they thought they had the chance to get renewed for another season lol. A week later Knots’ 2 hour season finale ranked at #10 against Cheers #3 and LA Law at #5. There’s only a handful of other shows running that long and still doing well enough the ratings/rankings i.e. Gunsmoke, Law & Order, NCIS, Grey’s Anatomy and more recently Blue Bloods.    Another point of interest is the unraveling of the 80’s sitcoms had already begun in the spring of ‘91. The first part of a Who’s The Boss? two part season finale we see here ranked at  #40 and second part ranked at #43 the following week. Growing Pains finale the previous week barely made it into the Top 30. The Wonder Years fared no better. Cosby losing ground, Night Court and Dear John just being there etc.
    • I'm glad a lot of people are continuing to enjoy this show.

I haven't posted in a few weeks and have some catching up to do. But I did manage to look at the last two episodes after hearing about how good they were. I really enjoyed them. My thoughts on them: The affair/secret child reveal was very good. TMG was really good as Leslie, her whole confrontation with Ted/revealing all to the Duprees was very entertaining. I continue to love AM/Eva. She my top two favorites on the show (along with Nicole). I have a lot of sympathy for Eva and how she was conflicted/ultimately felt guilty about publicly revealing the truth to everyone. I wonder what will happen to her next, especially if she does go and live with the Doctor that is friends with Ted and Nicole. I lol'ed at how Martin/Smitty jumped up and grabbed Leslie when Eva was calling her crazy. The way they did that was funny to me. I haven't liked many of Martin's actions/his attitude especially regarding Smitty/his children, but I think it was interesting how he wanted to check Ted for his actions. And also wanted Bill to be questioned/confronted about his as well. I haven't been the biggest fan of the character of Andre, but I appreciated his calm and measured approach after the reveal and how he talked with Eva. I thought it was interesting that he knew about the affair and convinced Ted not to tell Nicole. Speaking of Nicole, I continue to love her character and view her as the heart of this show/Dupree family. I am interested in seeing where her journey goes as a character after this reveal. I'm looking forward to her leaning on Dani and (also Anita/Vernon, etc...) for a change.
