Knots Landing

I'm glad the show eventually moved on from the '60s flashbacks. A year or two later, when the writers openly hated Val, we might have gotten "fun" glimpses of her serving eggs to truckers. And Gary in the gutter.

Michael York has just shown up. (And we're all going to wish he hadn't.)

Charles Scott, Johnny Rourke, Jill's descent into madness are the storylines that made Knots Landing go off the rails for me.

As many of you know, Joan has been MIA from the podcast as she battles an illness. This weeks episode of the podcast is a birthday celebration for Joan and a request from the ladies to send all your positive energy her way.

Joan is one of my absolute favorite actors and I've been worried about her since she's been gone from the podcast for so long. This was a nice treat for fans who are worried about her. You get to see several costars pop in to wish her a Happy Birthday, including Ted who we haven't seen in ages. The best part is that Joan also pops in and talks about what she's going through and thanks everybody for their support.

They don't always get it right, but this was such a treat! I love the bond these ladiea have and I hope Joan is able to get well and re-join them.

The Charles Scott story was maybe the dullest in the show's history, and while I appreciate the idea of a pure old Hollywood romance for Abby, this wasn't it.

It seems like any time these are posted we hear about Joan not being there. I will keep her in my thoughts. Thank you for reminding us.

Did Ted get Botox or a facelift? I remember his face being very wrinkled, and now it's so smooth.

Maybe it's just smoothing filters? It seems a bit odd that he'd get extensive plastic surgery at 80 (though I'm actually sure he's had some nips and tucks before).

📌 Dallas / Knots Landing: Gary Ewing Cast Swap & Irony
David Ackroyd originated the role of Gary Ewing (middle son of Jock & Miss Ellie) in two 1978 episodes of Dallas (“Reunion, Parts 1 & 2”). He established Gary’s character: sensitive, troubled, the “black sheep” of the Ewing family.

He couldn’t continue due to other commitments, so the part was recast in 1979 with Ted Shackelford, who took over on Dallas and became the star of the new spin‑off Knots Landing, playing Gary for all 14 seasons (1979–1993).

Irony: Years later — in 1982 — David Ackroyd returned to the franchise… as a guest star on Knots Landing, playing a completely different character (a politician/love interest), appearing alongside the actor who replaced him in his original role.

Shackelford and Ackroyd were both on Another World at the same time in the 70's. The show Ackroyd committed to was Little Women on NBC which lasted a few episodes. How things might have been different if he was available for Knots.

He was a better actor but I don't think he would have worked well as Gary in that show. Ted was a better physical match for Joan and later for Donna.

I think Ackroyd's Gary would have had immediate remorse and inner turmoil for having cheated on Val and would move heaven and earth to get her back. Then again his Gary probably would never had cheated in the first place. I could see him being the leader/voice of reason of the cul-de-sac after the death of Sid.

Shackelford's Gary was a self centered smart @$$ who would do that smug shoulder shrug thing when he was called out on his bad behavior. He also wanted have his cake and eat it to by having his little wife at home and his side piece at the office and across the street. His Gary was often verbally abusive. At times he could not stand the sight or sound of Val.

David’s Gary is a very different character from Ted’s Gary. The character David portrayed on Dallas was a principled person not particularly interested in being rich. Ted’s Gary comes off a less of a back sheep and is just as shallow as some of the Texas Ewings.

SoapDope, you just explained the differences between the two Garys far better than I did.
