I'm assuming they mean musically. That will never happen again. Aside from GL, which I don't even call a soap anymore, DAYS has the worst background music in daytime.

And guess who the composer is??

Anyone have any insight into why GL was "Most Disappointing Show" that year? I was still watching on and off (I was in the military then) so I don't have the recollection to understand what stories were airing, and why SOD thought it was so bad....

Oh there were some bad storylines that year...Bert's funeral, Reva/Cain, Simon/Jesse(ick!), actually anything related to Simon really, and towards the end of the year we got Paul and Christine Valere...zzzz. I don't know if any of those stories were the reason however, and there were some good moments too like Alan showing up alive at Alex's ball and Josh's return after Reva was hit by a car on her wedding day to Kyle. The first half of 1987 sorta sucked, but by summer and fall of '87 the show started rocking again.

GL was still in a state of transition (and trying to mirror DAYS/GH) in 86, Sherri Anderson, Jeff whatshisname, and a sleu of other writers. 87 was def a step up when Long returned.

Yup. Jeff Ryder was headwriter during most of 1986, followed by Mary Ryan Munisteri and Sherri Anderson in early 1987.

It seems to me that every soap in the 1980s, except for maybe Y&R, was big on the whole supercouple/action/adventure storylines.

They were copying GH's Luke & Laura mega-successful formula. And because of Luke Spencer's appeal, the soaps started having a lot of "anti-heroes", the bad boy who isn't altogether bad, falls in love with a "good girl" who sees through his crap...DOOL had a lot of success with Bo Brady and Steve Johnson in the 80s, as well as the creation of supercouples.

Seriously, for anybody that wasn't around during those years, the whole Luke and Laura publicity went way beyond the soap media. I mean, people can debate about whether it all was ultimately good or bad for soaps but it definitely garnered attention for the genre. And GH gained a sort of "hipness" with the younger crowd that somehow, decades later, it still retains some measure of, I think.

Wasn't this when Asa faked his death with the help of Brad Vernon and ended up living on some island with Pamela? Yeah, it was pretty pointless.

I believe so, but I do know that at this time he was legally married to his first wife Olympia, who was Bo and Clint's mother (Ben's mother was Renee, while David's was Emma Bradley). Anyway, Olympia was pretty crazy at the time and had been locked up.

Asa pretended to be an old sea captian named Jeb Stuart, and wooed Pamela into marrying him. I believe she was sick at the time though. But yeah, they lived on the island and Pamela knew nothing of her husband's true identity.

Later on, after she did learn the truth, she did persuade him to legally marry her (Olympia had died a couple of years earlier in 1981), but not long after she divorced him.

I think I have that all straight.....but if not, don't blame me. This all happened in the early and mid 1980s, and I was born in Dec. 1979, so my memories from this time are a bit fuzzy.

AMC sorta got away from the supercouple action/adventure storyline int he 80s IMHO. Yeah they always had a thwarte dyoung love couple btu that had been their hallmark since Phil/Tara/Chuck/Erica. When one was gone they'd try to have a new one (Nina and Cliff, Greg and Jenny, Jessie and Angie, Tad and Hillary, Nico and Cecily, Tad and Dixie, etc)

DOOL had a lot of success with Bo Brady and Steve Johnson in the 80s, as well as the creation of supercouples.

Days was the most popular soap among my elementary and high school classmates, but my favorite daytime shows were the CBS game shows and soaps. I was probably the only person in my school that loved Victor/Nikki over Bo/Hope in the mid-1980s, and Ridge/Caroline over Steve/Kayla in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

-loss of Vincent Irizarry(Lujack)

-Philip's novel became a soap within a soap(parody of campy 30's gangster flick)

-Sampson Girl contest(national contest with all finalists fromSpringfield!)

-Jealousy driving factor to create conflict b/w Kurt & Mindy,Rick & Roxie,Maeve & Kyle,Calla & Ross,Vanessa & Billy.Ed & Mo

-Claire's personality so changed that she had to be put in a coma to bring her back to old self when she awoke

-Brawls b/w Hawk and HB for Lillian were too common

-Jackson's mysterious(unexplained) past

-overall characters behaved in unimaginative,recycled manner

-everyone miserable all the time

Agreed, I think Blake became a woman who learned from her mistakes and grew up. I too wanted them to be the core couple after the Tori thing, as a matter of fact, around Wheeler after Simon left I wanted them to move into the Bauer house..( I would have Blake say that this is the closet thing she knew as a home )SORAS the kids, and bring Sam back..Dinah would have a very contentious relationship with her, as she would be jealous of Ross and Sam's relationship, and Blake and Dinah would have that tension (ya, know cause she killed his brother) it would be a core family that had some fissures leading to good drama. But now, Wheeler and company though the Coopers should be the core.

Agree that great minds can think alike :)
In terms of Derek, I see the show doing one of two things based on the most recent episodes that featured him.
1) They do the gradual fade-out of the character until he stops appearing and is occasionally mentioned by Jacob (i.e. still living and existing in town, just not being seen). We saw some evidence with him having a group of co workers he's friends with, plus a female co worker interested in him... so possibly we see him regain his walking and go back to his life with the Fire crew and eventually we stop seeing them on air.
2) His mentioning to Jacob that he hopes to win Ashley back signals that perhaps the dark side we saw glimpses of has been hidden and will rear itself if she appears to be moving on with a new guy.
In terms of Ashley, the show seems committed to keeping her character on the show especially since she was shown in the Thanksgiving episode having a quiet day with Jan and Mona as they discuss Black Friday shopping, food, and other day to day matters... so I think delving into her backstory in terms of who her father is would be a good place for the show to go while keeping her as a good friend to Naomi, Shanice, and a good nurse during medical stories.
Perhaps one of the children of the handsome new doctor could be her love interest down the line.

Re: 1978. I'm glad the unedited version of the episode complete with commercials is available. The one that has been posted several years ago had several segments missing. I like Barbara's long hair here. Dr. Steven Farrell didn't last very long I take it since she is re-connecting with Tom (Tom Tammi) by 1979. The actor playing Steven (Phil Peters) was the real-life husband of Lenore Kasdorf (Rita GL).

Oh, how I wish we'd gotten to see Ross deal with his teenage sons. I loved his relationships with Phillip and Sam, but he really deserved to be seen with his own kids (other than the horror that became Dinah). The boys simply disappeared off canvas after either the Nursery Stalker or the affair with Tori.

What I liked about Bloss is that I liked how they grew to be the stable couple- the closest to an Ed and Mo in their prime. Especially after the Tori story when their extra-marital exploits were in the past. I wanted them to SORAS the three kids, along with Dinah and with Phillip's family as Ross's extended family would really be solid core family material.
With that said, I was rooting against Bloss in 1999 as I really liked the Ross/India pairing-- but that just turned out to be a waste of MKA.

Looking back...Primetime Ratings from the 80's

The return of sitcoms' popularity in the mid-'80s was a real thing, but the crash of the wealth-based nighttime soap genre was resonate and self-induced.

There was an effectively grim finality to the mood of the cliffhangers in the Spring of 1985: Bobby's death, the Moldavian massacre, the return of Val's babies... and they felt as if they could have ended right there (and perhaps they should have, although I would have sorely missed S10 of Dallas, S6 of FC, and Season 9 of Dynasty , and the next five years of KNOTS as they singularly maintained quality).

But, wow, these shows just fell apart post-Spring 1985. They stopped being character dramas after a while, and just started trying to "impress" viewers in some superficial way and to "fake it" somehow.

What a painful, unnecessary slide it was. But once these shows seemed to lose their identities, their sense of self, their momentum into the dung heap couldn't be slowed.
