1. Doreen was shipped off to an asylum for the criminally insane (yes, those were the exact words used). Her maiden name was Fleming. Earl Rowe guested in 1977 and 1979 as Evan Fleming, Doreen's father.

2. Yes, we did see more of Carolee and her mother Emma's extended family besides MJ. When MJ married Tom Carroll in 1977, we were introduced to her many siblings and their spouses. The pre-fame relatives were played by Carol Potter (90210 & SUNSET BEACH), Dan Lauria (THE WONDER YEARS) and Chris Goutman (future director and EP of soaps, of course).

3. Mona got engaged to Dr. Winston "Win" Croft (Philip Sterling) onscreen in 1973 and they left town together to get married. Meg Mundy (Mona) returned to the show in 1975. Her marriage to Win ended a few months later when she became so preoccupied taking care of Steve and his kids after Carolee disappeared in early 1976 (really kidnapped and stashed in a sanitarium by Ann Larimer, to facilitate Carolee Campbell's exit from the show). The last straw was when she moved into Steve's house. Win, played by a different actor, gave Mona an ultimatum - him or her family. Needless to say, Win was history.

4. The name of Jason and Steve's father was Jonathan. He had died years before, and unlike modern soaps - the show never revived him. (Though they might have if the show had never been cancelled!!)

5. Michael Paul was Mike's only child.

6. Billy wasn't really portrayed as a villain until Alec Baldwin came on. His predecessor, Shawn Campbell, played Billy as more of a slacker.

7. According to some soap book (I think it was All My Afternoons), the show was set to recast Toni but the plans to do so were ultimately scrapped. Toni's body was never found in the plane wreckage (of course). Had the show continued, they probably would have explored that loose story end.

Mona and Barney might have been fun. She was a wealthy socialite who lived in a mansion, while he was a blue collar bartender who lived in a basement apartment. Champagne meets beer. I wonder if TPTB ever thought about pairing them, but the show burned through about a dozen writing and producing teams those last few years. If it was an idea bounced around, it probably got lost in the shuffle.

At the time the Sara story got praise for the writing/acting although long term killing off another Of Mike's wives wasn't a wise move. And with Mike in a wheelchair it was overkill.

Currently the show is without an EP as Doris Quinlan has yet to take over. I wonder what the circumstances were at the time that led to Chuck Weiss leaving and no immediate replacement?

I don't believe Weiss ever worked in soaps again.

Interestingly when Quinlan arrives, there are cast/story changes yet she retains Elizabeth Levin/David Cherrill as writers. Usually a new EP changes writers quickly. Perhaps that points to Quinlan's experience in the genre and not going for the easy solution in  blaming writers for poor ratings but instead working with them to make changes.

Yep, that's Mary Frann, giving the same kind of line readings she always gave on "Newhart."  Don't know about Sally Gracie, though.

And the man is actor David Spielberg, who passed away several years ago.

Thanks! I'm so ashamed to not remember where I knew him from - he was malevolent shadow government agent Herb Ketcher in my favorite Wiseguy arc (the Proffit arc). He was so mean to my beloved Roger Lococco...

    • I don't expect Lois to be the same person she was 25 years ago, but she's definitely lost a lot of what made Lois unique.  It's clear the show doesn't know how to write for her, and the sole purpose of Lois is to hide this Gio secret.  It's a shame she doesn't interact with more of the canvas.  It's a waste of Rena's talents. I like Brook Kerr most of the time.  She can be hit or miss.  I totally get what you are saying about her line readings too.  I honestly think the character really suffers being stuck in the Curtis pairing.  She's much better than Tanisha Harper's Jordan lol.
    • Friday and yesterday's episode is what daytime television should be. The other shows airing could take a page from yesterday's show.  I loved the rage, hurt and anger Nicole unleashed on Ted.  Daphnee should be up for an Emmy nom for these scenes.  It broke my heart to see how Dana had locked Eva out.  I do feel sorry for Eva.    I am still bumfuzzled as to why Leslie/Dana went to the DuPree's and asked them to accept Kat UNLESS Eva is really Kat's twin (and really Nicole and Ted's daughter that maybe they though they lost or an embryo Dana/Leslie stole??) I loved how Anita and Vernon both shot her down.    Ohhh and let me just say Friday and yesterday was the MOST fire I have seen Martin have since the show started.  Maybe Brandon Clayborn is coming into his own with the role finally.
    • You've been seeing him all along. You just didn't know it was him, I guess.

    • Where to for Dana? She's pissed off the Duprees (most of the cast), alienated her daughter and will she be welcomed by the Have Nots at the diner? Maybe she can befriend Ashley and Derek and liven up their story.
    • Melissa Ordway announced she was moved to recurring back in November but is still credited with the contract cast members.
    • I think of Evan as a smarmy bast*rd. Maybe you'll like that description. You certainly have him pegged correctly since he is just a soldier following "Admiral" Iris's marching orders.
    • So far the only interest I've seen from Evan to Amanda has been listening to Iris's orders to go and seduce her.  So far he hasn't been successful... but who knows. Amanda is unbearable at times. Entitled, spoiled... idiotic. Iris... so blatantly manipulating her and Amanda takes the bait. But I guess... when she gets in trouble... she'll have a chance to learn. That's what makes these shows so interesting.    Oh, no, don't worry. You haven't ruined a thing. Evan has not been on my radar that much... he was not one of the characters I was caring particularly... so nothing much has been changed for me. I don't think he has the stuff to ruin Rachel's life. He's just a pretty guy that can follow orders. Iris on the other hand... is dangerous.

P.S Maybe Evan will surprise me. Who knows.
    • The show has gone back to 10/10 entertainment! I'm glad that I was right in feeling that what were experiencing were growing pains. I'm sure they are not over yet, but I'll know that we always comeback to quality drama. I think it's going to be a hell of ride (in a good way) from this moment on. BTG has that magic that not a lot of shows have. I'll update more... when I'm done catching up.
    • So very glad to hear this. Yesterday I suddenly thought; OMG, what about spoilers, have I just  ruined things for Maxim in getting carried away with interest in Evan, who was so well-written & well-acted. BTW, your fan review of this episode was a sight for eyes that had not seen one of these for a little bit too long, LOL!!!  Mitch is also fascinating to me but in his case it's because he was all in with Janice & her nefarious plan & then he did this turnabout we've mentioned & he basically got off scot-free.
