January 13, 201511 yr Member I had no idea Edie had been on The Doctors. I remember watching her on NBC 10 when I moved to the Philly area in the mid-90s. She was a well-respected journalist here. Article on actress Edie Huggins who appeared on TD in 65. She was a trained nurse and consultant on the show. http://www.broadcastpioneers.com/ediehuggins.html I had no idea Edie had been on The Doctors. January 13, 201511 yr Member That was a great read, Paul, and very helpful filling in who some of the characters were from the cast lists, especially those from 63-66. Thanks so much for posting.
January 14, 201511 yr Member One thing I noticed in the last two days with Steve`s interaction with Karen. I love the way David O`Brien conveys tenderness(notice the way he strokes karen`s cheek or touches her face) and gentleness in his portrayal of Steve.
January 16, 201511 yr Member As much as I love Nick and Althea, sometimes the Penny scenes just drag. Did Maggie use the "D" word????????OMG!
January 17, 201511 yr Member I LOVE Penny! I hate kids on soaps, but she entertains me. Does anybody know the history of Penny? What major stories did she have and how long does the current one last? I know Julia Duffy played the role for a while. Staying in this bloodline, I was confused when I read someone named Jocelyn Somers played Althea from 77-81. Is that correct or did IMDB simply put down someone who I'm guessing was a temp recast or something? I thought Douglas Marland fired Elizabeth Hubbard and simply rested the character.
January 17, 201511 yr Member That's a mistake (about Althea). saynotoursoap wrote a detailed history of Penny several years ago. http://boards.soapoperanetwork.com/topic/27061-the-doctors/page-19#entry952259
January 17, 201511 yr Member And then for some bizarre reason, subsequent writers chose to kill off Penny.
January 17, 201511 yr Member They killed her off? That seems stupid. It's similar to Search For Tomorrow killing off Jo's grandchild. It's weird when you such important characters with very few direct relatives and then the soap kills them off! Reading back the thread I saw a Karen spoiler than confused me. I'll put it in spoiler tags in case anybody doesn't want to know. It was a listing from 1975 and says that Steve's presumed dead wife, Karen, returns! I found that very interesting! I guess that means she keeps the baby and that they get married! Does anybody know how long Karen stays and if she's played by the same actress when she returns in 1975?
January 17, 201511 yr Member Yes. Not long presumably. I guess they killed Penny off to give Althea more story when she returned, and to free up Jerry. They may have felt the show already had several women in that age range (Penny's age range). I do wonder if the show had gone on longer, if they would have brought her back from the dead. January 19, 201511 yr Member Liz Hubbard ad at around 15 minutes. This must be around the time she returned as Althea. The other woman also looks familiar to me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADhKWBZwt0I
January 19, 201511 yr Member So I've watched some of the episodes of the Doctors on Retro Tv.. perhaps modern day writers should take a look at how the show writes Carolee.. the good girl. She is neither dull nor weepy. She has her moments of insecurity, but she is intelligent, sarcastic and holds her own. She is how you write a nice character without making her boring.
January 20, 201511 yr Member Sarah Whiting was Jo's adopted grandchild of just a few years. I don't believe they'd even met before Sarah came to Henderson. So, I'm not sure if she qualifies as any sort of legacy character on SFT. But...killing off Eunice and Suzi? And "forgetting" Jo's established grandchildren, Chris and Stacey? Yeah, not good. They killed her off? That seems stupid. It's similar to Search For Tomorrow killing off Jo's grandchild. January 21, 201511 yr Member So I was reading the article (great find by the way!) and I was wondering two things. 1. Ed Kemmer played Stowe Philllips. Does anyone know anything about this character? 2. Who did actor Angus Duncan play in 64? Thanks in advance!
