Julie Goodyear: Coronation Street's Bet Lynch slowly fading away, says husband

Quote

Brand, 55, publicly shared news of Goodyear's diagnosis last summer.

Sharing an update on her condition, Brand said: "I miss the fun-loving wife that Julie had always been - the larger-than-life personality that brightened up everywhere she went, and the smile that lit up every room.

"All of this is now slowly fading away and it's extremely painful for me to watch this deterioration."

Brand said his wife now struggles to recognise people, and said he missed the daily joys of being in a couple.

"Not being able to spontaneously go out as husband and wife, holding hands as we stroll along, going for meals together and going shopping - all these losses for me symbolise the long goodbye."

Kate Brooks is the new producer.

I’m not a watcher of Emmerdale anymore, but from the little I understand, this won’t exactly inspire confidence in the audience.

Looks like the UK soaps are making the same mistakes as the American soap have made; recycling producers.

By and large, the ITV soaps have this standard pathway. Wherever a producer comes from (Iain MacLeod, for example, has his roots in Hollyoaks), they land on Emmerdale as showrunner, and will invariably move over to Coronation Street.

Kieran Roberts, Steve November (previously Frost), Stuart Blackburn, Kate Oates, Iain MacLeod, etc

A few, namely Phil Collinson, did not follow that path.

I’ve been really enjoying the show the last few weeks. Of all of the soaps I think Corrie utilizes modern tech/social media the best, this Leeanne cult story and Lauren disappearance/Roy witch hunt being great examples of how to modernize old school storyline setups.

Big story for Toyah coming up

Spoiler

It is revealed that Toyah had a stillborn baby by her rapist back in 2001, which she buried on the Red Rec. The baby's remains are found during a search for Lauren's body. There's already been scenes where Toyah has had a meltdown with internet sleuths seeking to find Lauren near where the baby is buried.

Naturally this is proving controversial, not only for the dark themes but also because it is quite a big retcon as Toyah was onscreen for most of that year and didn't leave until 2003, nearly two years after the rape.

I do wonder if this is an attempt to reset the character and retroactively explain away her various actions since returning nearly 8 years ago, such as her scheme with Eva to keep Eva's child and also her desperation to keep Alfie.

So Carla is going to enter into a relationship with DS Swain. Wow.

At this point it's giving the same vibes of GL's Otalia (Olivia and Natalia), forced and done simply to garner headlines.

Helen Worth leaves the show after 50 years. I liked Gail but I’m not that devastated that she’s leaving coz she had no real storylines anymore and her voice. She can’t do anything for it but her voice really gets under my skin and not in a good way. But she deserves her retirement

Good for her bowing out at her own will. I do think though that she would've remained as long as she wanted. That's one thing I'll give to Corrie unlike most soaps, they'll keep their vets till the bitter end. I don't imagine they'll kill Gail. I think they'll give her a nice sendoff where she'll opt to retire somewhere abroad and keep her alive offscreen.

I honestly thought we would see Sue Nicholls retire and Audrey leave before this, but yes, Helen Worth has been a trooper for decades and has earned her retirement. It's still quite sad to see another link to the show's past go.

I wonder what they'll do story-wise. Will they kill off Gail? I'd quite like to see her move to another country or something, rather than something sad.

I remember Gail went off to Thailand a few years ago and really seemed to enjoy the holiday? Maybe she'll go back permanently.
