ALL: Daytime's Biggest Mistakes

Featured Replies

Some times, the daytime writers really screw up a story by doing something to it. Death is usually the biggest mistake fans believe writers make on the soaps. Why did that person have to die? There was so much potential there. Death isn't the only mistake the writers have done. What are other?

Everyone's alive! (DAYS)

-Sure, it was the biggest sigh of relief heard around the world from DAYS fans. The beloved characters we saw die tragic deaths were all really alive. It was like a dream that you were scared you were going to wake up from. But once all the excitement of having your favorite characters back, where did it leave us? We had to go through that awful Captive Island storyline that never seemed to end. Nothing was really accomplished from the whole storyline, except for the dead coming back to lousy and unecessary love triangles. I would rather the dead stayed dead and found out what really made Marlena snap. It's obvious this wasn't the original plan. Marlena was supposed to be the killer for real. So much potential!

Alistar gets a face! (PSNS)

-I truly believe this will is the biggest mistake Passions has done so far in the 7 years it's been on the air. Sure, many daytime fans will believe the development of the show was a mistake, but I digress (LOL). Never showing Alistar for the first 5 years of the show added something to the whole character. It was like you would really believe this person would be that cruel and heartless because you didn't have a face to see. Once they casted Alistar with that guy that died, Alistar lost his edge. He no longer seemed as ruthless as he once was.

There are so many others. Think about it!

HAHA!!!! :)

Now this is a good thread.

I'm with you Drew on those two.

I would throw in "Aging Serum" (The Doctors)

"Black Guy poses as White Guy" (Young and Restless),

"Joan Crawford plays her daughter" (Secret Storm),

"Marlena Possessed" (DAYS)

I totally agree on "Everyone is Alive"!!! If they were going to do that they should have never even done the whole SSK storyline in the first place!

And what angers me the most about Melaswan is that this was a sudden plot change! I know for a fact JER only did Captive Island because the ratings dropped after Alice was killed, so he thought it would make thigns better to bring everyone back.

Another reason is that JER had only planned out the SSK storyline and nothing else, so after that he was out of ideas and when he heard about the ratings that gave him an idea for what to do next. Ugh.

I think among OLTL's will be holding off on Todd's revenge post-execution. It was the natural follow through, but instead they are trying for a 'softer' Todd and to redeem Spencer.

But then that's part and parcel of the #1 and #2 mistakes: tasteless trio Frons/Valentini/Higley, and the dynamic dud of Spencer and John McBain.

AMC:

the undoing of Erica's abortion (big big mistake)

McTavish for the 3rd time

AW:

The killing of Mary Matthews and Steve Frame. And the firings of Jacquie Courtney, Virginia Dwyer, & George Reinholt.

The killing of Frankie Frame.

ATWT:

The rapid aging of Dan Stewart. Ruined the older generations in that family.

B&B:

Not keeping the Logan's as an established family all along, or establishing a second family. They are really needed now to help keep things fresh.

Days:

Making everyone alive after the SSK.

The mass firings back in the 1980's. Brought Days to one of it's worse times in it's history.

Turning the DiMera's into comic book villians instead of the gothic villianous family they started out to be.

Turning the show into daytime's version of Saved By The Bell (the start of the terrible years - with only Brash & Cwikleys as a bright point for many years)

The Doctors:

The aging serum story.

Letting the Pollock's get away, and then Douglas Marland too.

Writing out Nick & Althea or letting Gordon & Hubbard leave.

GH:

Doing special stories for certain periods of time, instead of all year long

Letting Laura kill Rick Webber.

GL:

Killing Leslie Bauer

Killing Maureen Bauer

OLTL:

Killing off the next generation of male characters in the Buchanan/Lord families

DENA HIGLEY

SFT:

Killing off Jo's only son - Duncan Eric in the 60's

I think "everyone was alive" was the only way to salvage the mess Days had made at the time. Reilly could've blamed it on whoever he liked, but the fact is that as originally shown Marlena was part of the murders of a score of beloved characters. She could not have survived that as a character despite his habit of turning the character into little more than a colorful mascot and freak show, in my opinion. The resulting story was awful, but I felt both stories were awful. JER's "great vision" didn't work either way to me.

As for biggest mistakes, I think two of OLTL's latest were Spencer Truman, and killing Duke Buchanan - the future generation.
