All: Wardrobe - Males and PJ's on Soaps

I was reading an old story that I saved from a daytime mag from the late 80's or early 90's. Sorry didn't save the issue as it got wet when my hot water heater busted a year or so ago. I couldn't even save the whole article just saved parts of it.

Anyway I think it was from Daytime TV magazine, and the article was praising how the wardrobe folks in soaps did a good job at the time with matching men's sleepwear to the character they played. For instance they said it made perfect sense for Adam Chandler to wear silk pajamas. They praised how AW always showed John Hudson (David Forsythe) emerging from bed in an old t-shirt and boxer shorts. It just seemed so fitting for the characters, and they praised each one.

I was sitting here looking at it and thinking about today's shows and the male characters on them. Personally I don't know very many guys at all who wear pajamas to bed, so it seems crazy to me to see so many guys on the soaps wearing them or something to bed. I mean I don't know what a lot of guys wear in real life, but I do know that the majority of guys I know (mostly from a group of friends I have who go camping together alot) either sleep in underwear or nothing at all. Now at the camp where we go all of us wear our underwear in our sleeping bags, but I know that many of them admit to sleeping the buff at home. And no there is nothing sexual between us group of friends - just to set that straight. We are just fishing buddies and camping buddies. There are about 30 of us in total with about 15 or 20 of us at the most at the camp. Also during my 5 years of college, I had 5 roommates and not one of them slept in pajamas. And as an RA who did bed checks at night I never saw any guys in pj's. So that is my basis for this.

Anyway I just wanted to get others opinions about the male characters in soaps and whether you think the wardrobe folks are still doing a good job. And what you imagine the male characters on your soap should wear or possible wear to bed.

Some ones that pop in my mind are:

Bo Brady - I would think that he sleeps in the buff; showing him in pajamas of any type would be wrong.

Paul Williams - same as Bo

Victor Newman - silk pj's

Adam Chandler - silk pj's

Holden Snyder - I can imagine him like John Hudson, old t-shirt and boxers for pj's - no traditional pj's for him; would be totally wrong

Dusty Donovon - under Brian Bloom's portrayal either undies or nothing, with Grayson's interpretation, I would think some type of pj's

Roman Brady - I think just boxers with no shirt, or nothing at all. Putting Roman in pj's would be totally wrong for the character

Abe Carver - pj's would fit the character

Shawn Brady - like his father

Philip Kiriakis - some type of pj's would fit his character

Tad Martin - boxers or briefs to bed - no pj's for him even though the Martin home might have required them growing up

I could probably think of some others, but will be anxious to hear your thoughts. Or any other part of the wardrobe matching the character. For instance, I feel that Mimi's wardrobe on Days does not match her social status at all. She dresses in too many designer type things to match how poor she has always made herself out to be. Things like that.

I don't know I just can't see him in pj's at all. Maybe flannel or knit boxers. Those would fit Tad.

I totally agree with all your choices. Esp. Rex I can definitely see that.

I have been trying to think of John on Days. I can see him going almost anyway except for anything silk.

Hhhmm....I'm thinking.

John Black - DAYS

Silk PJ bottoms w/no shirt

Thankfully, my AMC David has NEVER worn pajamas to bed, just boxers to appease the censor! :)

Well, I wear PJs. You mentioned college; most guys I knew wore PJs, "dorm pants" to bed. I don't know; I think sleeping nude is disgusting and honestly? What's the point. I never got that! Who 'sleeps in the buff?' It's pointless. Seriously. I really DON'T get it. It's always perplexed me. Makes no sense!

Jack (ATWT) - Flannel PJ's with a tank top

Ryan (AMC) - Boxer briefs only in summer, with tanktop in winter

Jason (GH) - Boxer briefs and T-shirt

Sean (AMC) - Boxers

Will (ATWT) - Nude

Patrick (DAYS) - Nude

It may be just the changing times or just the people you knew or associated with, but I believe the norm is still there - thus even alluding to the variety of answers we are getting.

And what you say goes with character too. I can honestly see just from what I know of you on the board that you would wear pajamas. They go with you. But just because someone doesn't wear them, does not make that person wrong. I personally can't stand pajamas. When i sleep I want freedom to move and I find myself fighting with the shirt all night long. Sometimes even the pants when I have had to wear them. I have slept in the buff and have no problem with it, but I do prefer some underwear for support. That's just me.

But as to the character thing, I think it adds a dimension to the character and certain characters fit a certain type. For instance as I said with Bo Brady. You put him in silk pajamas or pajamas period and it would change his character totally for me. Bo has a roughness, a rebellious edge to him. I think a characters wardrobe, lifestyle should match all the way.

Good ones again Andy. I can definitely see both Patrick and Will sleeping nude.

I was thinking about Lucas and Austin on Days. They are so different. I can see Austin sleeping in the buff or underwear at the most. But Lucas I can see as his character would wear pajamas.

Maybe it's the insomnia and that everything is funny but I nearly busted a gut laughing after reading over your preference of underwear for "support." (support for what? It's just like that nude thing--I don't get any of it). And I'm not trying to chastise those who sleep in the nude; I just really don't get it. Unless you're having sex, I suppose, it might make sense. But what if you're alone? Or what if there's no sex? Is it mostly a guy thing? to get turned on? To 'sleep masturbate' because of the erogenous touch of the covers on the genitals? Seriously, I've wondered about this ever since I learned that people actually sleep nude.

^for comfort

any form of clothes irk me when I sleep. I hate to be in a situation where I'm staying somewhere and I have to wear boxers and a tee. I toss and turn all night because it feels like I'm bound.

I thought it was common to sleep in the nude?

I always sleep shirtless and in boxer-briefs. I NEVER can sleep in pajama pants, WAY to uncomfortable and hot too.

Sometimes I will sleep in an old shirt, plain white or a college t-shirt, but thats usually if Im freaking cold and have no one to share my bed with ;)

  • Member

boxers and no shirt for me ... I think something along those lines is pretty common. I didn't think a lot of guys sleep in the buff, but they probably do.

  • Member

I can't wear a shirt in bed...always shirtless. Usually wear boxer briefs for the support - I've done the nude thing before, but just never really liked it for some reason - have to have some kind of underwear - preferrably boxer briefs.

I was thinking about Lucas and Austin on Days. They are so different. I can see Austin sleeping in the buff or underwear at the most. But Lucas I can see as his character would wear pajamas.

Lucas definitely wears PJ's. lol - I could see him in the flannel bottoms, shirtless.

More:

Brad (Y&R) - Boxer briefs only.

Luis (PSNS) - Boxer briefs with a tanktop

Christian (OLTL) - Nude. That whole caveman look...

Luke (ATWT) - Boxers and a t-shirt.

  • Member

I can only sleep in boxers, nude feels too...nude for me. But my guess (and hope) for my soap crushes would be...

PSNS...

Luis - Nude

Sam - Nude

Fox - Nude

DAYS...

EJ - Nude

Shawn - Nude

Y&R...

Nick - Nude

Neil - Nude

Brad - Nude

Professor Korbel - Nude

Ji Kim - Nude

Daniel - Nude

Billy - Nude

ATWT...

Paul - Nude

Simon - Nude

WeeMike - Nude

Casey - Nude

Dallas - Nude

But really, these are just my predictions. We won't know for sure until soaps show all of these characters sleeping. *prays for the day my prediction comes true*
