  1. From what I can recall, these are not among the problematic issues, more of maybe lines that get crossed by today’s standards but were probably seen as towing a fine line back then. I don’t want to spoil it for you in case you want to watch the film for yourself.
  2. ^^Sometimes it’s just really inappropriate to be trying to play devil’s advocate. Tur really is doing the entire profession of journalism a disservice by asking these types of questions.
  3. Just keep in mind that 1980s films are not without controversy and only today, I realized in retrospect, there are one or two problematic moments in this film. It is an undeniably beautiful looking film and Wiggins Rodriguez looks and sounds exquisite in it.
  4. Donald Trump must pay $354.9 million, barred from NY business for 3 years, judge rules
  5. Beautiful, talented, certainly was not known for her acting (this was her only acting role) but featured in an iconic role where she played the title character. A Diva with the common touch. Ms. Wilhelmenia Wiggins Fernandez, R.I.P. https://www.inquirer.com/obituaries/wilhelmenia-wiggins-fernandez-diva-obituary-20240206.html
  6. Nope. Ideologically, I realize he felt compelled to return to Russia, after his miraculous recovery from having been poisoned, but his return really did seal his fate. He was arrested upon arrival, so I am not really sure whether or not he couldn’t have achieved his goals from exile in Germany-it certainly would have given him more time.
  7. @DRW50Yes, I remember when that post Labor Day weekend episode was up on YouTube but I don’t remember the picture jumping that violently. Too bad the previous cliffhanger episode has never been posted. I think that episode had all the action with Kim giving birth and Craig following Sierra up to Foxwood Lodge and ended up conceiving their firstborn Bryant. So much missing from the best of this soap.
  8. Currently, I am listening to a townhall on Spoutible with Representative Jasmine Crockett. https://spoutible.com/pod/65c73ffe1db49c2a3f17765f
  9. Something tells me that the likes of The New York Times and its ilk do not want to truly have that conversation (*coughs Fox News Channel*).
  10. R.I.P. Bob Moore, founder of Bob’s Red Mill. https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/national-international/bob-moore-founder-of-bobs-red-mill-dies-at-94/5128679/
  11. Cohn is nothing if not consistent in being wrong. Speaking of The Times, isn’t this special (*inserts sarcasm*). https://news.yahoo.com/terrorists-paying-check-marks-x-185418291.html
  12. Well, to borrow a word from @DRW50, in contrast to the evasive answers that Pilip tried to give, the Republicans are not at all being evasive about their racism, xenophobia and antisemitism. They are just letting it all hang out there in the open, like soiled undergarments. https://news.yahoo.com/capitol-hill-republicans-bigoted-attacks-190406864.html
  13. Ordinarily, I might agree but Pilip is a much more complex figure being Ethiopian born and having served in the Israeli army, that still goes a long way in a more conservative leaning area like Nassau County and a portion of Queens, the district which Suozzi reclaimed (remember that he once held office in that district and relinquished it for an ultimately failed bid for governor of New York). One of the main issues, that probably won’t get much attention is that Pilip was very vague on her positions, including on abortion, an issue that does drive engagement among women (and a surprising number of men), even in the suburbs. Pilip, for the most part, bobbed and weaved when it came to debates, likely because her one debate was something of a flop. Yes, the odds were definitely not stacked in her favor as a Black woman running in Nassau County but she was running against someone who voters were already familiar with and she did little to nothing to get voters more acquainted with her, a definite ‘no no’ in a post George Santos election. It was even more interesting that the level of voter turnout was relatively high, especially since the entire region had a snowstorm that brought more snow than in the previous two years of snowfall. Yes, NY has early voting but turnout on the actual day was higher than expected from what I read. It did make me chuckle too that the Republicans who run the county were under a microscope because some prominent Democrats in the area pretty much publicly declared their hopes that the streets in Democratic leaning areas will be plowed with as much urgency and thoroughness as the Republican leaning areas. The Republican officials pretended to be offended by this and made statements about equitable plowing but allegedly, streets in Republican leaning areas were plowed the earliest. Her support of Trump, halting or not, is a wash, imo. Yes, Trump has some support in parts of the NY suburbs that ring NYC but the revocation of S.A.L.T. happened under his administration and people in these same NY suburban areas were among those adversely affected and many are likely still pissed about this. Suozzi deftly reminded voters of this during the campaign, Pilip had no answers for this issue, like much of the other issues she was queried on. With all this, I expect she’ll probably run again unless the Republicans find someone else but there’s not enough of a window for them to find someone else to run an adequate campaign.
  14. Not necessarily. Didn’t Eileen Fulton do this in the 1960s? Granted it was from ATWT to a newly created soap but it was as the same character.
  15. I think anyone living in the NYC Metro area knew Suozzi was taking that seat. The media wanted to make it look like it was going to be close but Republicans had the one chance in Santos and he made fools out of everybody and anybody who was foolish enough to cast a vote for him. Republicans were not getting another chance this time around.
  16. Anthony Herrera brought life to one of the best ever villains in daytime dramatic history but James Stenbeck should have stayed dead in 1989 after his son Paul pumped multiple bullets into him. And especially given the fact that the writing portrayed James as a cartoon villain when he reappeared on the canvas in the ‘00s Yes, I know that a lot of people loved that spa storyline but they could have used any number of other villains in the history of the show to carry out this plot. By then Emily and Lily and Carly each had enough enemies to fill a mansion in the Swiss Alps to fulfill the plot.
  17. LOL, I guess it did. Even if we had a few flops stateside, I wouldn’t mind seeing some experimentation with the format. Before both Guiding Light and ATWT were cancelled, I had hoped that someone might make each daytime soap a 30 minute serial again but that is when I still believed that P&G wasn’t spiteful enough to throw both shows in the bin.
  18. I won’t list the ones that have already been listed so: ATWT: Bryant Montgomery and Marshall Travers- yes Marshall Travers, they took a charismatic (albeit a cad), good looking character who had smoldering chemistry with Jessica Griffin and reduced him to a rapist and throwaway character. One of the few. Black men on the show. Just disgusting. I have spoken at length in the ATWT thread about how much of a mistake I believed killing off legacy kid Bryant Montgomery to be. I also hated that the character SORASed, but that’s another story. Y&R: John Abbott and Nathan Hastings. The show should have given John Abbott a few more years before expiring the character. Bringing him back as a ghost to “haunt” Jack (which amounted to yammering on and nagging him) was beyond silly. I am not disparaging the idea of the paranormal and connection with the supernatural but Jerry Douglas was still able to handle the work, why not really use him, even if in a reduced capacity. Imagine if Nathan had been maimed by the accident instead of merely killed and done away with? Olivia would have had more to play off of if, as a doctor who had sworn an oath the provide care now had to care for this cheating husband who she now detests? Imagine if she had this emerging budding friendship with Malcolm that’s clearly turning romantic, while having to deal with this? The character still could leave, or be bundled off to a rehab facility in Switzerland eventually but the departure of Hastings always seemed so hasty and abrupt, which despite his vile act, never gave proper closure to a character who had been on the canvas since the early/mid 1980s, nor did it give proper closure to his relationship with Olivia.
  19. Admittedly, I don’t pay much attention to polls and haven’t in years. It’s all too “Inside Beltway” for me. I cannot summon the energy to be this fixated on American politics this early.
  20. Of course. The irony however, was not lost on me that the slip up was following Biden’s pushback against the council’s allegations of the classified documents found being were a result of age related memory problems. Unfortunately the Trump cult are blind to his obvious lack of character, lack of discernment and lack of intelligence. The Biden coalition tends to check for things like these. Hopefully this incident will fade…and quickly.
  21. The BBC just did a story on the special counsel’s report and Biden’s response, immediately highlighting a slip up Biden made, mixing up the president of Egypt with the president of Mexico. I cringed.
  22. ^^Also, it was the was the 1980s when Wham! could be considered peak masculinity among the teen set.
