-1/4/65-1/29/65. Bert finds out from Paul that the doctor’s name she saw on Julie’s pill bottle is that of an ob/gyn. Julie is feeling more and more trapped and desperate. George starts to remember more about Mike and Julie and confronts Julie on her motives for marrying Alex. Julie violently goes off on him. Bert calls the ob/gyn as “Mrs. Bauer” and finds out Julie is pregnant. Bert tells Bill that Julie is pregnant but thinks Alex is the father. Bill thinks that, if Julie is pregnant, it could just as well be Mike’s. Papa, Meta, Bruce, Bill, Bert, George, Jane and Mike celebrate Mike’s graduation from law school. Papa thinks Bert should have gotten a beehive hairdo for Mike’s graduation. Bill and Bert tell Mike that Julie is pregnant. An angry Mike tells a devastated Julie that he’s not going to allow her to go to Mexico for a divorce and that he’s going to sue her for divorce instead.
-2/1/65 thru 2/26/65. Mike tells George he doesn’t want to take the position of his law partner because of George and Alex’s friendship and Alex and Julie’s relationship. He tells George that he’s going to try to prove Julie is an unfit mother and get custody of Hope. Papa and Bert talk about her snooping which led her to know that Julie is pregnant although Bert thinks the baby is Alex’s. Alex tells Julie she has to tell Mike the baby is his or he’s going to tell him himself. Julie becomes hysterical at Alex’s ultimatum. Feeling trapped and desperate to get away from town and the Bauers, she packs her bags and plans to leave with Hope. She plans to give the new baby up for adoption as soon as it’s born so she isn’t sucked back into the Bauer family. While packing, Julie experiences excruciating abdominal pain. She picks up the phone to call for help and then passes out. Paul tells Jane that Julie is pregnant. Jane goes home from her evening with George, Paul and Robin and finds Julie lying on the floor unconscious. Julie is rushed to the hospital. Alex tells Robin that he is not the father of Julie’s unborn baby. Julie loses the baby and is in a serious condition at the hospital after losing a lot of blood. Alex rushes to the hospital and finds out about the baby who died and Julie’s serious condition. He tells Paul that, regardless of what everyone thinks, he couldn’t have been the father of the baby because he and Julie had never had sex just as Mike enters. Alex tells Mike that Mike, not Alex, was the father of Julie’s baby. Everyone now knows that Julie’s baby was Mike’s since Alex has said he and Julie never had sex. Mike is feeling guilty after having accused Julie and is donating blood for her in hopes of saving her life. Mike admits to Alex that he raped Julie and he blames himself for what’s happened to Julie. Bill lays into Bert for her meddling in the Mike/Julie situation.
-3/1/65-3/31/65. Jane confesses to George her part in brainwashing Johnny and trying to keep Paul and Robin apart and the fact that George was contemptuous in his feelings toward Jane before the accident. Bill continues to be mad at Bert for her harming Mike and Bruce and Papa try to stop a rift between the two. Maggie Scott is introduced. George’s memory of how he felt about Jane comes back after talking with Alex about the past. George has to decide whether to continue in a relationship with Jane now that he remembers. Julie has regained consciousness and Mike goes to visit her. Mike apologizes to Julie for the way he’s treated her but Julie is unresponsive and doesn’t say a word. Julie also doesn’t respond to Robin and Robin, Mike and Jane all worry about Julie’s lack of reaction to anything. Papa and Meta discuss Bill’s anger at Bert for putting the idea into Mike’s mind that Julie’s baby was Alex’s. Mike continues to be racked with guilt and concerned that, despite reports that Julie’s physical condition has improved greatly, there’s a “No Visitors” sign outside her hospital room. Julie is severely depressed and not responding to anyone. Julie’s doctor, searching for an explanation for her emotional instability, seeks answers from Mike. Mike tells the doctor how Julie kept the fact that he was the father of the child she miscarried from him because she felt trapped in a miserable marriage and wanted to be with Alex. The doctor also thinks Julie was abusing her medication. Julie tries to commit suicide by jumping from her hospital window. Paul catches her in time and restrains her. Julie tells the psychiatrist that she’ll try to kill herself again.
-4/1/65 thru 4/30/65. The psychiatrist tells a shocked Mike that Julie will need to be placed in a sanitarium. Robin tells Bert she wants to have a baby with Paul. Mike turns to Bill for help in deciding what to do with Julie. Jane wants to leave town and join the Peace Corps due to her guilt over how she treated Paul and Johnny and feels like there’s no hope with her and George. Mike is wracked with guilt over Julie’s mental breakdown. Maggie lends a sympathetic ear to Bill while Bert later selfishly berates Bill. Bill tells a shocked Papa and Bert that Julie tried to jump out of the window at Cedars and is being sent to a mental institution. Robin thinks her difficulty conceiving a child is punishment for marrying Paul without Johnny’s acceptance but Paul places the blame for Johnny’s estrangement from him on Jane’s shoulders for poisoning Johnny’s mind against Paul and Robin’s marriage. Bill tries to get Mike to pull himself together for the sake of Hope and for Julie when she comes home from the mental hospital. Papa and Meta talk about what’s going to happen to Jane now that Julie has been institutionalized. Mike goes over to Julie and Jane’s apartment to pick up Hope’s things and encourages Jane to stay and give George a chance. Alex and George watch a Good Friday sermon on TV. Jane actively avoids George as she tries to move out of town. Julie gets moved to the psychiatric hospital. George, Paul and Robin conspire to invite Jane over to the Fletchers for dinner and have George come over, forcing Jane to talk to George.
-5/3/65-5/31/65. George and Jane reconcile and Jane accepts his marriage proposal. Mike is excited to start working with Jason Webber at Globe Airlines but is still guilty that Julie was driven to attempt suicide and is fearful that she will try it again and succeed this time. Peggy Scott’s first episode. Mike gets the idea for Alex to visit Julie in the sanitarium which leads to another fight between Bill and Bert. Papa thinks Bill has become too independent in his year and a half alone in Europe and it has made him restless with wanderlust and discontent with domestic life. Bill gets angry when Bert refuses to accompany him on his business trip to New York City because she doesn’t want to leave Hope. Alex returns from his visit with Julie and sadly reports to George that she is still suicidal, depressed and dissociated. Jason has a mild heart attack which causes him to have to cancel the trip to NYC, leaving Bill and Maggie to take the trip alone.
-6/1/65-6/30/65. Maggie continues to turn down Jason’s marriage proposal. Ben stops by the office looking for Maggie and tells Bill that he’s her brother. A shocked Maggie tells Bill that she doesn’t have a brother. Johnny comes home but continues to give Paul and Robin the cold shoulder and tells Jane he wants to go back to the Benedicts. Johnny befriends Alex, asks about what his mother was like and says he doesn’t want to live in a place that killed his mother. Papa and Mike think Bert is spoiling Hope and neglecting Bill. Maggie is upset because Ben has found her and wants to be back in her and Peggy’s lives. Peggy is preparing to leave school and move back in with Maggie. Helene Benedict dies in a car crash. Jane wants to postpone her marriage to George for Johnny’s sake. Bert and Mike butt heads over Hope. Bill and Maggie grow closer.
-7/1/65-7/29/65. Peggy moves back home with Maggie. Maggie is panic-stricken by a surprise visit from Ben to her apartment building. George and Jane get married. Ben approaches Peggy at the drugstore but doesn’t tell her who he is. Maggie tries to keep Ben from seeing Peggy, not knowing he already has. Bert becomes even more obsessed with Hope and becomes incensed when Mike tells her he’s taking Hope to the sanitarium to visit Julie. An angry Mike’s patience with Bert comes to an end and he tells her he doesn’t care what she thinks.
-8/2/65-8/31/65. Ben is dumbfounded to learn Maggie is thinking about remarrying Ben for Peggy’s sake. Mike considers moving out of the Bauer home with Hope due to Bert’s obsession with Hope and the strife it’s causing Bill and Bert. Mike breaks the news that he’s taking a job offer in Philadelphia to a shocked Bert and she refuses to accept it.
-9/1/65-9/30/65. Bill hires an investigator and finds out that Ben is involved in organized crime. Maggie is afraid of Ben’s anger. Ben continues to meet with Peggy and try to manipulate her, telling her he’s a friend of her father’s. Robin tells Paul that she’s pregnant. Maggie continues to turn down Jason’s marriage proposal.
-10/1/65-10/29/65. Mike and Hope leave for Philadelphia which throws Bert into a fit of anger. Bill tries to get Bert to see the truth about herself but she refuses, which leads to a big argument between the two. Bill storms out and later runs into Maggie at the office, who he is starting to fall in love with. Bill feels protective of Maggie and warns her about Ben and his criminal associates. Maggie tells Ben that she knows he’s been secretly meeting Peggy and all about his connection with the criminal underworld. Ben says that he’s changed, that he loves Peggy and that he’s going to tell her the truth. Johnny moves back home to the Fletchers and meets Peggy. With Maggie’s constant refusal to accept his marriage proposal, Jason decides to move to Europe alone. He thinks Maggie is interested in another man but doesn’t have any idea who it could be. Before he leaves, he asks a guilt-ridden Bill to look out for her. Maggie pressures Ben to tell Peggy the truth and he tells a shocked Peggy that he’s her father, not who he painted himself out to be and that he’s an ex-con who abandoned them when she was a baby. Jane tells George that she’s pregnant with their baby.
-11/1/65-11/30/65. Bill and Maggie admit they’re in love with each other. Maggie tries to resist it because Bill is married but Bill says his marriage is in name only at this point. Paul tells Johnny about Robin being pregnant and Johnny is not happy about having a new half-sibling. Papa tries to keep Bill and Bert from drifting apart. Ed comes back home and starts his internship at Cedars. Ed tells Bert she needs to lose weight and she becomes self-conscious about this due to Bill being cold to her. Ben continues to worm his way into Maggie and Peggy’s lives.
-12/1/65-12/31/65. Seeing the error of her ways, Bert apologizes to Bill, goes on a diet and becomes more attentive to him which makes Bill even more guilty now that he’s in love with Maggie. Paul is worried that Henry has turned Johnny into a snob. Papa overhears Bill and Maggie talking about their affair. Paul, Robin, Johnny, Peggy, Jane and George gather for a Christmas/Bon Voyage party for Alex as he leaves Springfield for Europe. Alex toasts to all the friends he’s leaving behind and to the babies of George and Jane and of Paul and Robin that are on the way. Everybody watches a minister giving a Christmas Eve message on TV and then they gather to sing Silent Night as George plays the piano. Papa begs Bill to end things with Maggie. Peggy organizes a New Year’s Eve party so that everyone can get better acquainted, which Bill and Maggie dread.
