All: Suicide on soaps

Has any major character ever gone off a show by way of suicide? It's unfortunately common in real life, but characters on soaps never kill themselves.

The only actual suicide I remember was on Days when Tony killed himself in Aremid (even though it was later re-written to be Andre). The last suicide attempt I remember was Days again, when Ali McIntyre slit her wrists in the bathtub and scrawled "Mike" on the wall with her own blood way back in 1999.

GL's Ben Reade committed suicide by lethal injection. There's also Clone Reva. LOL!

On Days, Eve Donovan tried to kill herself back in the late 80's, I think. She did a drug overdose. It was very well done, and was the first time I actually felt sympathy for her character. I remember there was some awesome song playing in the background, but I have no idea what it was.

Ooh wait, I remember another one!

On Passions, Theresa killed herself by jumping into the icy ocean after Ethan dumped her, and demons took her to hell because it's a mortal sin to commit suicide. After making a deal with Julian/Zombie Charity, she was returned to life.

Oh that 's so true, Rion! Damn, Theresa was literally doomed long before "Hot LA Passions." :(

Making a deal with the dark side ain't good!

I remember reading somewhere that on ONE LIFE TO LIVE in the 80's, that Bo Buchanan's wife, Sarah(played by Jensen Buchanan) killed herself.

Sara was killed in a car wreck. Bo tried to jump off the ledge of the Banner after her death.

In the late 1970s OLTL had at least one, possibly two suicides. The first was Naomi Vernon (played by the great Teri Keane) and the other character was played by Jackie Zeman and I *think* her name was Lana. Noami definitely committed suicide but I think Lana's death may have been accidental.

If I remember correctly, after Naomi Vernon's suicide Agnes Nixon gave an interview saying she would never have a character commit suicide on AMC. Anyone else remember this?

I remember seeing something like that. I believe they shy away from suicides as much as possible.

Wasn't it Didi, one of Bo's wives that committed suicide? I read something about it involving an electric fence.

No.

And a character did commit suicide on AMC - Helga back in 1992.

There also were attempted suicides by Erica, Ceara, Mother Janet, and Gloria (that I can remember). I also seem to remember Kendall trying to commit suicide by shallowing pills... or maybe she was faking.

Yes, Helga was on top of a castle in Budapest and plummeted to her death. But I can’t remember if she fell or jumped.

I believe Erica's suicide attempt was way back in the late '70s when she moved to Hollywood to become an actress. After she couldn’t get any lead parts she contemplated killing herself by jumping off a cliff near the beach. I always felt this was totally out of character for Erica.

Gloria was in her car inside a garage, and planned on the car exhaust killing her (carbon monoxide poisoning). She passed out and her head hit the car horn. Erica heard it and saved her before she died.

Janet's attempt was after she drugged Trevor and he still rejected her. She smashed a mirror and picked up the pieces to slash her wrists. But then the mirror started talking to her through the shattered piece and gave her the idea to take over Natalie’s life.

Ceara was going to jump off a bridge, but Erica and Jeremy stopped her.

I believe Kendall was faking to get Anton's attention, but I think she actually did shallow the pills later on and had to have her stomach pumped.

Then there's Ray Gardner, which I guess would count as a suicide. When he planted a bomb inside the Martin home on New Year's Eve he didn't know Jenny would be there. When he found out, he rushed in and grabbed the bomb, and then clutched it to his body, went outside and blew up with it.

Back in April of this year, ATWT's Emily tried to kill herself by jumping off a bluff. She went into cardiac arrest but Paul got her to breathe again.

I belive Julie Bauer (wife of Mike Bauer and mother of Hope Bauer, GL) killed herself while in a sanitarium in the early 1960s. Also, on ATWT in the early1970s, a leading character died when she stepped in the path of a car and was struck. I believe this may have been Claire Shea (great-grandmother of Emily Stewart). Although never definitely stated or proven, I believe it's been debated over the years that the act was deliberate on her part.

No, Didi didn't kill herself. She was fighting with faux-Bo, aka Patrick London (who had been holding her, the real Bo, and Delila hostage) and the two of them fell against an electric fence; Didi actually never touched the fence, she was entangled with Patrick. I believe Patrick died immediately but Didi lingered a while in the hospital, long enough to say goodbye to Bo.

Stone on GH didn't commit suicide in the usual sense but in his last stage of AIDS, he chose to stop taking his meds because they made him sicker and nastier, so he made a choice he knew would hasten his death.

There were also scenes where Sonny went to visit Lily's father, who had a stroke after the car bomb he meant for Sonny killed Lily and his unborn grandchild, and Sonny left him with a gun. After Sonny left the room, you heard the gun go off. Although, I think this "suicide" got reversed later...IIRC, he turned up alive and nabbed Sonny & Brenda.

On GL, in the Sonni/Solita days, when Sonni was on the bridge with Reva, she remembered finding her twin Solita having hanged herself in her bedroom closet when they were teenagers. They created a lot of good "flashbacks" for that story with the twins and Wil Jeffries. Their father considered Solita the "evil twin" and she was often beaten...between that and the heartbreak of finding Sonni in bed with Wil (whom Sonni had tricked into believing she was Solita...and Solita got beaten by her father because he thought she was the slut), the poor girl was miserable. I still have the scene of Sonni coming into the bedroom and slowly opening the closet door and you could see the shadow on the wall of Solita hanging. That was some creepy stuff.

Also on GL, Beth tried to kill herself when threw herself in front of a car after Phillip chose Harley over her.

Hey, maybe someone can refresh my memory on this one but Maria Roberts on OLTL....did she try to make Tina look guilty of her murder? I remember Wade Coleman's mother coming forward saying she saw Maria herself put poison in the needle but I don't remember if she meant to inject herself or if it was an accident. Or if she was trying to poison Tina.

Also, did Gabrielle ever try to kill herself or did it just seem that way because all her dramas were so magnified by her hysteria? ;)
