ARTICLE: ‘Beyond the Gates’ Splashes In Debut, ‘The Young and the Restless’ & ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’ Hit Season Highs Among Key Demos

I think 2 weeks ago they would be very happy with an 80% hold of W18-49 from B&B. For comparison, Passions held only 35% of its Days lead in (1.1 vs 3.1 -thanks Jason47) during it debut week. W25-54 was even better at 83%

I'm a bit surprised though that the actual show only did 32/30% better in the demos than infomercials for the show last week.

I can’t wait to see what kind of movement we see for May sweeps. That should give them plenty of time to build, even if it’s just building to a Guza sweeps pocket story.

I do think Y&R and B&B are vulnerable too, not just GH, as far as where the ratings could lead. They benefited by having a block of shows though, and GH is an island. And island putting out a lacking product. And I love GH.

And knowing Guza he is doing just that.

It just occurred to me last night that with Guza there, we do have a writer who can do EVENTS to get people talking. And flow is going good right now just out of the gate for the show. By May Sweeps, I feel it will be flowing perfectly in terms of writing/plot/character development. It would be delicious if Guza does an event for BTG with well-paced aftermath and consequences that blows GH out of the water.

The Mighty Michelle has done an amazing first week filled with Sweeps-like, Emmy-worthy events & character growth. Not to mention elevated dialog.

Viewers were curious.

Not sure if I'm going to keep up with it.

Only watching because of Tamara Tunie.

Some if that is natural. Retention, yes, that’s the big next question.

Beyond happy. I want to say I knew it, but I had hoped that BTG would help streamline CBS's daytime schedule better and hopefully, we'll eventually get to know its streaming numbers.

Pretty good numbers for BTG's debut.  I think it's a given the show will drop in week 2 and probably week 3 as well.  But I think it would be good news if the show stayed around at 2.0-2.1 for a while and hopefully the show will slowly inch up as it gets better and better.

I hope Frank is scared sh*tless TBH. If not he should be. This does NOT bode well for GH at all

Considering the huge promo and expectations, and how many have been pointedly tuning to BtG to try to wake GH up, the drop wasn't that noticeable (in my opinion). The bigger drop is still from last year, which is what should worry them, but which they probably believe means viewers want to see more of Carly, Sonny and Jason, possibly a return for Michael Easton, and maybe some kind of half-assed stunt involving a washed-up primetime name to be determined.

I think they should be wary of trying one of his sweeps stories. A lot of violence and clink-boom rehashes that have already been done to death all over TV and movies may just drive some viewers away.

Thank you for the ratings @Soap Opera Network . I hope everyone involved is very proud, especially Michele Val Jean, who has been a wonderful example of how a creator should promote on social media. She doesn't try too hard, she doesn't make it all about herself, and she makes you feel like you can trust her.

I wasn't sure what the numbers would be given the state of TV these days and the hurdle of a one-hour show, but at least people did tune in and that's a vote of confidence. Hopefully it will give them some breathing room with CBS.

Thrilled it's off to a positive start. I hope the streaming numbers are solid because they do matter.

I dropped cable/DVR eight years ago along with watching live TV. If it weren't for streaming, my soap-watching days would've ended.

I also don't watch anything on live TV anymore. There are a lot of us these days.

Even after a week, I think you can say BTG is the best soap currently being produced, especially creatively, from the writing. You wonder if it's because BTG is brand new. Maybe it's the baggage, the behind the scenes agendas and politics that have built up for decades on the 4 remaining soaps, that is weighing those 4 down.

It’s astonishing that the first new daytime soap opera in 25 years managed to significantly beat out GH - its legacy timeslot competitor in most markets. That’s no small feat, and true, more impressive will be holding on to that lead but this initial success should be celebrated.

People can claim GH has Hulu all you want - but GH (like all the other daytime soaps except Days) is first and foremost a broadcast soap opera who garners most of its revenue for the network from ad dollars spent during its live broadcast TV airing.

I am thrilled for BTG but it's simply not true that live broadcast is most important. I'm pretty sure every network has stopped using those as a success metric at this point. Hell, the reason The Talk was canceled was partly because they couldn't monetize it any further because it had no replay value.

Of course live ratings do matter, but the network is going to be focused on Live+3, Live+7 and streaming numbers as well when determining if any show is a success and that goes for Beyond the Gates as well. GH is regularly in the top ten on Hulu, daily, so it has it's audience.

I'm not trying to pin either show against each other (these are the only two US soaps I watch), but I did want to clarify when it comes to what the networks are looking at in terms of ratings.

And bad writing... bad... bad writing.
