ALL: Worst TWISTS

When a storyline is going greeeat and then the twist just ruins it.

One thing that comes to mind is when Bill and Sheila were hooking up and in some kind of dark union... and then the absurd twist that Bill is actually working against her... and wanting her to be in jail. But we saw him kiss her and... release his sexual energy with her... for WEEKS. So it was... kinda MIND-blowingly stupid.

AMC

Turning Ross and Natalie lustful affair into rape, just to defang Natalie. It was a huge mistake and I think the show suffered for it.

they missed out on continuing story for two fascinating characters, a big couple, and a established anti hero in Ross. They kept bringing in men to stir up drama every few years because they got rid of him.

I agree.  They wrote Ross into a corner when they had him rape Natalie; and even though I think they kept him on for a few years afterward, you knew there was no way the writers would be allowed to write him again as anything other than a supporting, "talk-to" character in other people's stories.  I mean, there's a good reason why, after he left, they barely, if ever, mentioned him again.

Anything that includes show wrecking continuity really:

ATWT: Either the mystery owner of the Falcon Club being James Stenbeck or “What did you do to my baby boy! I mean girl! Oh never mind I was just gaslighting you…”

GL: Maryanne Carruthers

Y&R: Jill is not a biological Foster x2 twists, Phillip III back from the dead and gay

Also any character damaging twists, like Y&R’s Neil holding a comatose Hilary hostage.

Both B&B and Days have had more terrible twists I don’t care to list because it would take too long

Anything on GH from the last 12 years. But the 2015 twist in Luke's final story was particularly bad, that he was suffering from split personality disorder. It would have been much better to reveal that the real Luke had died back in 2002 and that Bill Eckert had been impersonating him all this time.

I think @Vee hipped us all to the fact that Ron Carlivati's original plan was to reveal that Bill Eckert was indeed alive and pretending to be Luke before folks caught on and he and Frank Valentini changed things.

Something Tony confirmed, I believe.

There were many very specific hints early on re: early '90s GH that made it clear it had to be Bill. We went over them on here awhile back.

You know, I wonder what would have happened, had GH and ABCD allowed Tony Geary to keep playing Bill in addition to Luke.  Obviously, TPTB knew Bill was a dud and wanted him gone with the quickness, but what if they had agreed to let him play both roles simultaneously all those years?  Who knows?  Maybe TPTB and TG wouldn't have taken Luke down such a dark path.

@dc11786 was gaming almost this exact question out in the Classic thread a page or two ago, but I believe it was more about 'what if they'd brought Laura back but not Luke while TG played Bill'. I can't see it working for long, but letting Bill run another 6-12 months as a kind of antagonist to L&L with Geary doing both roles might've been real interesting.

    • It makes sense that she got a degree in directing. I've always said she should have been a director. I think she works better at the technical aspects of the show. I think her problem is the emotion/heart of a show.  She always guts the heart of the show she's on and she makes decisions that stop longtime viewers from watching a show. I don't think it's sexism to call that out especially as I've said similar things about Conboy. I've called out Rauch for much worse.
    • "Aunt Blanche" first appears toward the end of this episode, about 57 minutes in.

    • You're probably right. They may have just wanted edits of certain characters. Hopefully the rest is around.

I'm wondering if there were bits cut from this footage, because to me it seems that may be the case. At 11:23, Laurie tells her psychiatrist that the bar phoned and told her Mark got into a fight and needs to be picked up. It starts to fade to the next scene, you hear some different music begin and get cut off between the static, and where you'd expect to see the aftermath of the fight, we cut back to a later scene of Laurie in bed worrying about what's happening. The credits at the end also show that more than Mark, Laurie and Dr. Northcote should have been in this episode. Another character, Brody, played by Ed Setrakian, is mentioned but not shown. If this is the case, perhaps the original fan who saved this episode has the additional scenes.
    • Anyway… It’s a shame that the video that depicted Leticia’s death was removed from YT.

I've never seen a trainwreck like this in my entire life. 5 pencils and 3 dolls?!!!!!!!!!!! (this little moment starts close to the 7th minute) WOW. THIS IS HAPPENING IN AMERICA?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    • Ms. Phelps holds a BFA in directing from Carnegie Mellon University, awarded in 1972. At a time when women were underrepresented in directing programs, she was one of the few women in her graduating class. To suggest that she possessed no further talents than completely changing the style of music used on soaps seems like a vast underestimate when one reads her online biography through an objective lens. I guess that I should be more clever than to constantly blame misogyny for these misguided interpretations of her management style.  But, I'll never comprehend why fans unquestionably align their opinions even years after fact. Post-modernism, and the ability to reinterpret context through the study of history, seems to elude this conversation.

    • This is 100% correct.  It was even on the nightly news where the US Government would not let the cast and crew travel to Egypt because it was deemed not safe.  The Achille Lauro hijacking took place on October 7, 1985, when the Italian ocean liner MS Achille Lauro was hijacked by four men representing the Palestine Liberation Front off the coast of Egypt, as she was sailing from Alexandria to Ashdod, Israel. The location shoot was probably scheduled to be filmed in mid-October to air throughout November with a two week tape to air date.  Remember on the show they did some in studio scenes doubling for Egypt before shifting the action to Arizona.  It was an awkward end to a truly bizarre storyline.
